News Injury Woes Continue - CJ McCollum diagnosed with Pneumothorax

    Full text of the article:

The New Orleans Pelicans announced today that guard CJ McCollum has been diagnosed with small pneumothorax in his right lung after medical imaging was taken this morning. Additional examination will be performed in the next 48 hours to determine the progress of healing. More information will be provided following examination.
To clarify, taken from the a British National Healthcare Service website:

A pneumothorax is also known as a collapsed lung. It is a condition when air has leaked out from the lung in to the chest cavity and chest wall. This causes the lung to collapse down and peel away from the inside of the chest. [...] a small pneumothorax may not need any treatment. In this case the lung heals itself and gradually reabsorbs the air that has leaked out.

This generally takes 1 ? 2 weeks. [...] We ask you to avoid strenuous exercise and lifting heavy objects for at least 4 weeks.
While obviously the specifics of CJ's case may vary from the guidelines given there to the general public, and the description given as small indicates it may be a relatively quick recovery, we as a fanbase shouldn't be surprised if CJ has to miss some time - possibly as long as a month.

This is, I think it is fair to say, not good.

Hope he recovers soon and feels better. Collapsed lung may not be quite as serious as it sounds in this particular instance but it's still not good.
    Basketball.

Note, this is not the first time in CJ's career he's had this diagnosis. Roughly 1/3rd of people diagnosed with pneumothorax have it again within 12 months of the initial diagnosis.

The last time this happened was December of 2021, almost two years ago, and he missed a little over a month of play - 18 games.

So we're down another starter. Hopefully Jose is getting pretty close to returning.

And one of our better/higher volume shooters.

CJ has had a few bad moments so far this season but he was clearly one of the most bought in players on the roster, also had some fantastic moments, and had changed his shot profile to respond to the new offense perfectly. He was playing really well and the dedication was there. Suddenly boom, gone for probably a month, maybe more.

Saw someone tweet that, with CJ gone, the Pels now have zero of their top 5 3PM players from last year on the active roster. The other 4 were Trey, Jose, Devonte Graham, and Naji Marshall.

At least we've added Matt Ryan and Jordan Hawkins. They'll have to step up now.

Happened during the 3rd quarter. Might explain why he didnt have his usual shot output.

Let's hope they can stay around .500 till January. But this upcoming schedule is brutal. Oh well.

This is brutal news given that CJ has basically been the one and only "ironman" of our starting lineup. Get well soon CJ.

I'm not sure if there was a team with more random injuries as the Pelicans. I don't care about game gainst Denver, we will lose it anyway, but now 2 week stretch without only PG on the team...

Yeah, I saw him grab it and thought he had gotten elbowed. He has been struggling to breath well the last couple of games. Joel mentioned that he has had a bug, but apparently it was not that. Hope he gets well soon.

Well it's time for the young guards to show they deserve more playing time moving forward.
Dyson or Kira better deliver or this team will struggle for the coming weeks.

Every time when we start playing good basketball or something else going well for us, this team has health problems or loses someone... it's something imposible to think how unlucky we are... Lot’s of health for CJ.

This doesn't sound good. 6 weeks Wow...
6 weeks is roughly how long it took last time he had it, so it's not a surprise sadly.

Jonas hated so badly by the team even the fans forget about him.

Jonas has been on the team since 2021-22 and has played 159/170 possible games. That's 93.5% of possible games. CJ has played 107/116 games since getting to New Orleans, which is 92.2% of games.

Massive props to them both, but you gotta give JV the ironman title for the squad.

Fair enough. No hate for Jonas here.

CJ was on fire this season so of course he gets hurt. Could have used him before things got out of hand. Say what you want about whatever money he is on or whatever but he tries to play through it when he was obviously in discomfort. The guy is committed and I appreciate that.

Good news, we certainly could use the shooting.

This will be a big boost on the b2bs when Zion sits.
