I suppose it's because we need the cap space, but I don't actually know.

I wonder what the original intent of this was? Makes no sense that he has to wait until the 10th and then kings get three days to match n the entire time the pelicans have to act like its already spent $. Giving up players in case kings don't match. Dumb policy IMO
This team aint wining nothing with this coach, we can make all the excuses we want. Unfortunately excuses don't win games.

I'm okay, after much deliberation, with the deal itself. But if we lose Robin Lopez for absolutely nothing, I'd be pretty upset.

BTW can we get some topic title editing here? It hasn't been a rumor for three days and we've just taken the next step.

Does anyone think that the Kings are forced to match given that they have a new ownership group and have to show they're serious about putting a good product out on the court?

we still have time to pull something off via S&T....a little less time than they have to match...

Yeah, I thought it was dumb last year. Now I think it's really dumb.

I wouldn't be calling for that just yet. According to sources, no one knows what the hell is going on, and someone may come in at the last minute like a thief in the night. The Kings could also just ruin the party themselves, because they may feel like they don't want to disappoint their fanbase with a empty-handed FA period.

This very well could be the case after their whiff on Iggy. This definitely will cost us at least Vasquez who the Kings still may not want.

Thread is still not about a rumor anymore. But eh.

    This is all a diversion.

We're going to actually just swoop up Dwight.

Back when Anthony was 6'3" they decided to play together. So Dwight gave him some of that growth harmone he's been using.

I wonder if our offer prohibits a S&T. I say that because there has been a lot of speculation that the structure of the contract includes a trade kicker to dissuade the Kings from matching (in case they think they can match and deal him elsewhere). If indeed it does have a kicker in the structure, once the Kings sign him (as he would want the same structure we offered) and try to trade to us, I would think that the kicker would activate making him much more expensive to us.

I don't see why you can't remove the trade kicker if we do a S&T.

BTW, Arn Tellem is the agent for Robin Lopez, Quincy Pondexter, Greivis Vasquez, Tyreke Evans, and Anthony Davis. I'd say he can pretty much dictate what happens here.

Wow! before Evans agreed we had 80 pages. Now that he did we barely got 4 pages!

Because we still don't really know if he's going to be a Pelican or not. It's up to the Kings now.

Indeed. It behooves us to use greatest care here.

This also is...peculiar. Every. Single. Player.

Can someone please clear this up?

If we don't decline Lopez which I think is too big a risk, can we still have Evans sign the offer sheet?
Then once the Kings don't sign, can't we just trade both Vasquez and Lopez for what ever we can to get under the cap?

Or does our current cap situtation not allow us to even offer this to Evans?

    Thank you

When Lopez's contract becomes fully guaranteed, the Pelicans will not have the cap space to sign Evans. If it does comes to that, we HAVE to have a trade partner before Evans sign that contract.

I have no doubt we can find a taker for Lopez at that contract even if it is fully guaranteed. Heck, the Sixers could use Lopez at least until Nerlens "Sam Bowie Greg Oden" Noel comes back around New Years.

Why do we have to take the risk of losing Robin Lopez by declining the option on his contract? The NBA salary cap is a soft one. Tom Benson has got enough money to cover our butts if Tyreke Evans signs and we still have Lopez on the books; luxury tax, smuxury tax! This is not George Shinn's Hornets any longer. WE ARE PELICANS!!! Spend that money, Tom --- make it rain!

So we are pretty much #$#%@^ then?

    I wouldn't take the risk.
The Kings will sign him IMO.

You have to be under the cap to sign free agents and be under or at the cap after the deal. You can go over the cap by doing trades, utilize exceptions, or signing your own free agents.

That's what I was thinking but I don't think the rules allow us to even if Mr Benson would go into the lux.

    Can anyone confirm this?

    TY
