    Pelicans November 7th - New Orleans Pelicans @ Indiana Pacers - 5-4

On the road again, this time against the Pacers who are currently under .500 and have a bottom 5 defense in basketball. So let's see if we can make something happen and redeem ourselves from last game.
    Basketball.

If we are going to make noise this season, this is one of the games we really just need to go out and exert our will like we did in the first two games of the season. Against a bottom-5 defense, there's no excuse for us not finding Zion more touches, letting Murphy put them up from three, and hopefully have BI work out the issues he had last game.

Again, not trying to be a pessimist, but isn’t it pretty obvious now that we weren’t that good early - that the Nets were just trash? And we almost blew that Charlotte game

Pels are an above average team, but this idea that we can just go out there and beat down anybody and step on their throat is a little far fetched to me. This game will come down to the Pacers 3’s. They hit at a normal rate or better and this game is close. Pels blow them out if they are ice cold. Pels aren’t going to exert anything - they pride themselves on taking unnecessarily tough shots and because of that, I don’t see that many blowouts in our future

Not sure I'd count on Zion doing too much tonight. Looks like a GTD to me...something about a leg

The Pels offense is not the problem tho, it’s team defense that is holding us back

The Pels are good. They've played 3 total home games and have not had their best player and best defender for half of the season, yet they sit above .500. Have patience. They are working through the necessary chemistry kinks. Go out there and get a win, learn each other's games, and stay healthy.

We're top 10 in offensive and defensive rating (7th in net rating). We have four losses, three of which came in OT, two of which we had leads in the final twenty seconds. Just relax people. There's no glaring problems on this team. 5-4 is a totally fine record! Are we already so spoiled that we've forgotten how far we have come in one season? It's not a perfect team, and there are plenty of things to work on, but please just enjoy the process instead of burning it down after every loss in an 82 game season

You said they ARE good and also ‘have patience’ - thereby implying they aren’t good yet but will be

They have talent. A lot of it. But they are not an exceptional team who will just show up and blow out bad teams. They are an above average team who will beat bad teams more often than not but almost every game will be close enough for them to lose those games too if an outlier event happens on either side

Read your post again (above) and then google ‘straw man’

Literally nobody is “burning it down” and I don’t see any “panic”

Someone said the team Isn’t great and is just “above average” and this post was your response.

Pels desperately need more defense in the starting lineup. If you have three dribble cones on the court at once, it’s a problem. Jose and Larry have to save this team every time they enter the game. CJ and Zion need to understand that they can’t just play one end of the court. JV stinks at defense, so it’s essential to stop penetration when he’s in the game. CJ might be the worse defender on the team, so I don’t know what they can do at this point.

Also, can part of our “process” be pointing out where the team needs improvement (and then applaud them when they do) or are we only allowed to say glowingly positive things?

I swear, the bullying of objective thinkers on message boards is so old. If you don’t sunshine pump, you are the bad guy. Some of us like to track improvement and to improve, you can’t start at the top

And we know this team needs improvement, so why not acknowledge it.

Bullying objective thinkers? What a joke. I have reasons as to why they are better than their 5-4 record, which is still OBJECTIVELY GOOD. The positive thinkers are also allowed to push back against the realists on this message board, as far as I remember

Not sure when “Pelicans are good” became bullying objective thinkers. Cringy

Agreed...but trying to be patient, I think Daniels will be the 2nd best defensive player on the court by playoff time, assuming he is the real deal. And pairing a guy like Daniels with a player like Herb will GREATLY improve our overall D. This will be one of those cases where 1 + 1 = "More than 2"...at least on the defensive end of the court. At the moment, it's fairly easy for a team to avoid Herb defensively if they really want to do so. Throw another "Herb" out there at the same time and things get kinda tough. Daniels will make Herb a better defensive player & of course, playing alongside Herb, will make Daniels a MUCH better defensive player. Bottom line...GET DANIELS ON THE COURT !!!

The part that I think a lot of the critics are missing, is that this team can improve without any significant personnel changes. Its the beginning of the season, we are not supposed to be peaking yet

If I'm playing the Pelicans, I run every one of my sets to ISO one of my playmakers mano on mano with # 1. Once this is accomplised, I clear out a side and smile.

Someone said they are above average and your reply was that people were burning it down and panicking. I countered your hyperbole with one of my own, which you rightfully called out as ridiculous. So, next time, don’t be hyperbolic and I won’t respond with something equally insane

I agree having 1 guy who is a defensive specialist doesnt get the job done, has to be to be a team effort. We have to find a way to get Zion to be more effective on D. Also I really like what Jose brings defensively and think he elevates the play of other guys around him. This might sound crazy but bringing CJ off the bench like Russ and having Jose in the starting lineup would be interesting.

I get the peaking thing, but that’s if a team has new players and all that. The team is mostly the same. They should know each other by now. It’s not like the starters never played with each other before. They have no reason for being that bad at defense other than them just being bad individually, and that’s what it is. Only BI and Herb are capable of containing people. I am impressed with BIs defense none the less. I have confidence in Willie to get it corrected.

I would bring CJ off the bench for Jose in a heartbeat. Jose makes this team way better. Jose was a blessing for this team.

I have zero doubt that they will be better in March than they are now, even without any trades. But TODAY, they are slightly above average with no clear identity.

Again I wasn’t responding to you. General thinking amongst New Orleans fans after losses is complete doom and gloom, and after wins its a state of nervousness about the future. It has been that way for as long as I remember because of how bad the Saints were for like 50 years, and now the heartbreak that Pels basketball fans have consistently suffered through. So I think it is important that everyone keeps it even keel. This is not generally a rational fan base lol
