Pelicans Jordan Poole is a Pelican and CJ is headed to Washington

    Shams Charania

The New Orleans Pelicans are trading CJ McCollum, Kelly Olynyk and a future second-round pick to the Washington Wizards for Jordan Poole, Saddiq Bey and the No. 40 pick, sources tell ESPN.

Why would we add a year of salary to take on Jordan Poole? Just let CJ walk if you can't trade him for a pick and sign someone better in a year?

Weird trade. I can't imagine the team thinks Poole is going to be here long term. People know who he is at this point. But maybe a stopgap player at guard until either DeJounte Murray fully recovers, or someone they draft (Fears?) takes time to develop. Even most of the people that absolutely love Fears and think he's going to be a stud generally believe it will take about two years for him to develop into a player to get significant minutes in the NBA.

Also the team is without many bigs now so I'd imagine they're targeting one in the draft. Really hope it's not at 7 though because I'm not a fan of anyone at that range.

However, my personal preference is I'd be pretty happy if they came out of the draft like this:

    7: Jeremiah Fears
23: Rasheer Flemming or Thomas Sorber
    40: Hansen Yang

Interesting. CJ must have asked out. Prob will be bought out and can sign with a contender. Was nothing but a class act here. Wish him well.

I like it a lot. We'll see how it shakes out.

Did Weaver convince Dumars that Poole would be a good fit ? Weaver was a senior advisor for the Wizards before joining the Pels.

I'll miss CJ. I think he gets a bad rap because we were always having to ask him to do things he isn't great at doing but he always stepped up. Super professional. He was the David Wesley of this era. He had to go to usher in a new era but I wish him the best.

Browsing through some Wizard forums, Poole played pretty well there and went from being a hated player to a kinda liked one. He may surprise us.

I will not hate on a player before they even wear the jersey. Looking forward to see what happenes.

I wished we would have just kept Josh Hart. See ya CJ.

They might not keep both or either player.

Before this trade and assuming DJM has played his last game in a Pels jersey after that Klutch Sports sponsored podcast, I would have ranked our team needs in order of most important as:

    1) ball handler
    2) floor spacer
    3) big man
    4) another floor spacer

Poole scratches off two of our needs in one player. He averaged 38% on nine 3s a game last season. I don't think he knocks off the top floor spacer need since we lost CJ but for sure the bottom one. I'm pretty sure he's our starting PG this season.

I don?t think DJM?s podcast torches any bridges in New Orleans for him. He realistically won?t be a candidate to play until January or February of next year anyway. Whatever we get out of him this season is a bonus. No way we would get anything close to what we paid for him in a trade.

That whole podcast smells like a Rich Paul/Klutch Sports maneuver to force a trade. I really think he's gone as soon as he clears a physical and this trade for a ball handler further points to that.

Plus. He comes across as so toxic. You don't want a guy like that who has already burnt bridges at two other franchises around your new thing. If bridges could be fixed Dumars would have been in the media openly talking to DJM about repairing the relationship but the silence is deafening. He's gone. And he flames teams once he's gone.

I think this is an ultra hot take based on a podcast where DJM says he had a tough season and had a difficult time playing basketball in New Orleans. Couldnt every player on the team say that last year? The most controversial comment is when he said that he didn’t have a enough support from the Pels. You think the relationship is now irreparable? Why would Joe Dumars publicly make the issue even bigger? Whouldnt it make sense for him to handle it behind closed doors? You clearly outline that DJM has a big mouth and likes to play the victim card, but he still has the talent to be the best starting PG option on this team if healthy.

CJ was a very good player that was not utilized properly here. He is a great guy and I wish him the best. This is a trade that I can't speak on until we see how it unfolds. It needs to pan out. This will be a good barometer on how Dumars will fare here. Early moves can be pivotal.
