Pelicans hire Wizards' Troy Weaver as GM

    https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/...troy-weaver-gm

The New Orleans Pelicans have hired Troy Weaver as their general manager, a source told ESPN's Andscape on Wednesday.

Weaver will report to new Pelicans executive vice president of basketball operations Joe Dumars, who had an introductory news conference in New Orleans on Tuesday. Weaver is departing the Washington Wizards, having served as a consultant with them.

The Washington, D.C., native also spent nearly four years as the Detroit Pistons general manager before being relieved of his duties May 31.

Weaver was hired by the Pistons as their general manager on June 18, 2020. Under him, they were 74-244 overall and did not make the postseason. Weaver, however, did have some notable draft picks in NBA All-Star Cade Cunningham, injured guard Jaden Ivey, starting guard Ausar Thompson and reserve center Luka Garza, now with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Detroit also did not have much luck in the NBA draft lottery under Weaver, landing the No. 5 pick three straight years.

Meh. Let it happen at this point. Sooner we are in Seattle the better for our mental health.

Standard stuff. New head honcho means all his old buddies get new jobs, regardless of how bad they are at it.

Honestly being an NBA executive is kind of a dream job. It obviously takes a lot of hard work to get there in the first place, but once you are there, you're set for life. You get paid substantial sums in any prominent FO position, you only typically get fired every 4 or 5 years, and when you do get fired, you'll almost certainly be hired somewhere else in another position. And then when your best friend finally gets a new job, they'll just hire you again and the cycle restarts.

There are only a few jobs that are truly recession-proof, and NBA exec seems to be one of them.
    Basketball.

I am so tempted to light up the Pels sales rep every time they email me or harass my wife or me by phone, but I kinda feel sorry for them like the crew on a sinking ship…

I wonder if they even are reading the responses on their social media pages?

I think people mix up what the front office actually does. I mean, they know what the position does but as success doesn't come emotional takes outweigh logoloc. Like how Griffin consistently put contending teams together on paper, which is his job...but then he got flack when that team failed in other aspects. Or Weaver going out and getting a pretty impressive array of talent with the ammunition he was afforded and now he's being judged because of bad lottery hits and coaching blunders?

I mean, even Demps had us poised to contend for multiple titles after the Boogie trade. We were torching the league. Then pop. Injury derails it. All you can ask of a GM is that they compile the components together needed for a coach to take a team all the way. We keep having GMs that do that and people still give nothing but hate.

Yeah, tell me what great team Troy Weaver put together again? I agree with the David Griffin commentary. He actually put together great teams on paper, and he wanted to fire Willie Green in the first half of last season. I don’t think Griffin should have been fired. Willie Green should have, but ownership is very cheap and has a love affair with choir boy coaches.

Shamit reporting that Swin's been let go, so that'll be where the room for Troy's coming from.
