It's usually a mistake to trade down in the NBA draft.

Almost always. It's no secret the best players usually go in the top 4.

Look at the best players drafted at #4 historically. Chris Paul, Westbrook, Chris Bosh, Mutombo and many more. Here is a list of the top 20.

Now look at the best taken at 8. Robert Parish leads the way here with Detlef Schremph and Jamal Crawford but I can only find a top 10.

Here are some taken at 17. Jrue Holiday, Dennis Schroder, TM3. There is no top 10 list for 17. Here are all the 17th picks back to 2000.

While 8 and 17 might be better "value" when looking at it that way, and Griff has generally drafted well, you will most often be able to get a player with a much higher ceiling at 4 than at 8 and definately at 17. The point is that he whiffed massively on this one.
There's a guy on the roster right now we drafted at pick 17, his name is Trey Murphy and we traded down 7 spots to get him

I see that you didn't read my post that you quoted. Is he as good as any of the guys I listed as being taken at the 4th pick? Look at the top 20 list, is he as good as any of them?

He is better than a lot of the players you didn't mention that got drafted there. 2 out of 3 players drafted with the 4th pick never become an all star. According to the law of averages, teams with the 4th pick are more likely to select the kind of player that you've left off your list. Having multiple first round picks increases the odds that you hit on at least 1 of them. I'm surprised you needed me to explain that to you it's a really basic concept.

I get it. I understand the idea of trading back for multiple picks to increase the odds of finding a contributor. Statistically speaking though, you are much more likely to hit on somone with a higher ceiling at 4th than probably 8th and 17th combined. Just because Trey is starting to look like a good player that was taken 17th doesn't negate the fact that most players taken 4th are more likely to pan out than players taken later in the draft. It would have been the perfect year to swing for the fences with that pick as well since we had already taken the consensus #1 in Zion. I still like Naw actually and hated to see him traded. I'm just of the mindset that you don't trade away top 4 picks unless you have a specific guy in mind that will likely be there when you get that next pick. I suppose if Jax would have panned out we wouldn't be having this conversation. lol

Aside from my gripes with Green, it is criminal that we have waited this long to bring in Payton or a PG to fill the void left by Murray's injury. This organization is getting it wrong from top to bottom.

Zion put out a new video getting a back tattoo. He looks at least 20 pounds over weight

I saw that but we don't know when it was filmed. Hopefully it wasn't recently but on the flip side of that he needs to be taking better care of his body full time. Not just during the season. Trying to get in shape for the season instead of maintaining it all year could be why he keeps getting these soft tissue injuries.

Per ESPN Zion could be out even longer now. They also said we're faced with a situation where we should probably just move Ingram and play the rest of this season out to draft high. Basically tank.

They need to move on from Zion and either Ingram or CJ. A Zion trade with Houston would make the most sense. Jabari Smith (starting center) Amen Thompson (backup PF), Steven Adams (salary filler) and 2 to 3 1sts for Zion and Theis would be a nice move.

    When healthy?

    PG: Murray/Alvarado/Boston
    SG: McCullum/Hawkins/Reeves
    SF: Ingram/Murphy/Green
    PF: Jones/Thompson/JRE
    C: Smith/Missi/Adams(possible buyout)/Jemison (2way)

How about Zion for Giannis straight up?

I can't get on board with tanking this early in the season with this much talent. We got wiped out to start the season but guys will start returning. Yes are in dead last place but also like 6 games out of making the playoffs without even going to the play in, and there are so many games left. Winning a playoff series is more important for this team then getting a good draft pick and putting up a losing season.

I'm with you here. Too much talent on the team, if relatively healthy, to tank. I honestly want to see what the team looks like without Zion. Are they good enough to make the playoffs without him? I think so and hopefully Z can get back and actually make a playoff appearance this year. I'm trying to get back to my optimistic viewpoint but the injuries make it hard.

    Murray probable for tomorrow!

I expect a lot of rust plus the other teams are starting to gel and we've barely played together so I think the hole gets dug slightly deeper before we begin our ascent but....
