It's nice to seemingly have a coach that doesn't feel handcuffed to the starting lineup when closing games. It may seem simple and obvious, but finishing with Herb was the right move and I'm glad he made it.
First observations on Summer League
Obviously what your looking for are signs that these guys can come off the bench and give you solid minutes in the regular season. To that end what stood out on a very limited sample size...
-Basketball IQ. The Pels stressed wanting to get smarter on the floor. I was impressed with how Kira, Naji, Murphy and Jones played within the flow of the game. Kira was smart with the ball. Naji created and took smart shots. Murphy and Jones both moved well off the ball, particularly after Coach Green admonished them to cut more off the ball. They promptly did just that. I think you saw the advantage of drafting more experienced guys with years in good college programs under their belt.
-Defensive intensity. Another point on the Pels offseason check list. Just a single summer league game, but you had to like the squad's defensive tempo, especially int he second half. Everyone hustled, closed out, helped without too much over helping, got their hands in the passing lanes, etc...Just solid team defense. Herb Jones in particular stood out on this end. You can see how his length may be very useful as a spot defender.
-Versatility. Pels have been lacking length and switchability on the wing for a long while. In Jones, Murphy, Naji and Didi you saw potential for a much better ability to match up. All are long guys who showed good lateral movement, want to and understanding of how to play off ball and on ball. Not sure you've got an elite stopper in the bunch, but they can make life more difficult for some scorers than we've seen from the Pels in recent years.
-Poise. Again, just a single summer league but I really liked what I saw from Coach Green's demeanor on the sidelines and on time outs (which were mic-ed up for broadcast). Thought whole team responded well to his points and showed very good energy and effort, which I guess you would expect in summer league. But nevertheless it was good to see and I think it was a great idea for Green and the staff to all go out there together and get a head start on the season.
I'm sure there are other points, but that's some of what I saw. Obviously, Murphy shot the lights out and did other good things as well, and Naji looked like an NBA player out there, but I just liked the overall team performance in terms of effort, basketball IQ and defensive intensity. Fun to watch...
Yeah, Kira ceiling this season is running the bench point. He's basically a Ricky Rubio+ at this point and to be honest... It's not a championship caliber player, but we aren't a championship caliber team. So, his development is in reasonable expectation, but he definitely doesn't have much flash to his growth. Hopefully. It'll change soon when his shot starts to fall.
Loved what I saw. The whole team actually giving a damn gives me hope that it will translate onto the real team. Don't need to say it but Murphy looks like a total stud. Loved what I saw from Kira and Naji. Didi and Herb made a significant difference on the. defensive side.
How about Alvarado? That dude is a DOG. I want him on the team, no question. Seeing him get into it with Dotson gave me Pat Beverley vibes.
Jalen Green is a BEAST though you guys. I actually think he could easily win ROY over Cade.
Kira just had 11 points on 42% shooting in a game where his 3 wasn't falling and added 7 assists with zero turnovers. He's just very solid, and will be a great backup this season. A 20 year old turning the ball over 0 times in 27 minutes is extremely impressive. We get way too caught up in scoring sometimes
I’ve been thinking he was the one more worthy of #1 for a while. His game reminds me of some of the greaTest to ever play in small ways. With a good mix of things neither player I’m thinking of did in their primes because defenses wouldn’t allow it and players didn’t shoot stepback 3s intentionally.
Watching this game, made me now say we don't need Lauri or Buddy. I know it's the Summer League but I really loved Kira, Naji, Trey, Herb and Didi. We got this all, our future looks bright.
Might not NEED Buddy but we can use Lauri. A stretch big with the 2nd unit wouldn't hurt anything. Can never have too many guys on the floor that can shoot. I know he's not the best defender but our 2nd unit could have guys like Kira, Herb, Did, Naji, Jax, Temple... all those guys can defend.
Let’s not even overlook that Josh Hart was there sitting by Graham and BI, while Zion is not anywhere in sight. These things mean something. If Josh Hart wants to be a Pel, then I want him to be a Pel. Let Tractor Williamson eat his flinstone vitamins somewhere else.

Lol. I feel like he should have been there too but he did tweet out something when he saw Trey Murphy slam that ball down (which is a good sign). We know dude and his family on the fence so yeah we're going to have to expect this from him a bit early but hopefully he comes around and gives us his 100% as well.
I honestly think now just sign Josh Hart and we're good. Also loved to hear Graham and BI are going to get in the gym together.
