Last game we took an L but tonight we bounce back. Second night of a B2B, uncharacteristic performances from Chicago, some of our guys were clearly gassed; the loss sucks, no question, but no reason to let it derail anything. Onwards and upwards.
Tonight we take on the Dallas Mavericks, who are 12-14 but have won 4 of their last 5. Admittedly, all 4 of those wins have been scraped, including a 1 point win over Atlanta and a 5 point win over Minnesota, so it's not like they're screaming back into full momentum: this is still very much a team that's not having a great time.
They rank in the bottom 5 league wide in steals, rebounds, assists, and blocks. They are the 2nd worst 3pt shooting team in the NBA so far this year, at 34% overall. They are 17th in overall FG% and only mediocre (12th) in FT%: all of this means that after last year's historically great offense, Dallas this year is only 17th in ORtg this season so far. Their defense, even worse: at 27th in the NBA, it's one of the bottom 5 overall.
Very little of this is falling on Luka's shoulders, by the way. Watching him play, he's making many of the same passes to the same guys as last year and creating the opportunities: they're just missing a lot of them. Guys who shot well last year just aren't this year, and that includes Kristaps shooting 32% from 3, and of course the loss of Seth Curry who was a huge piece in their rotation last season.
There are obvious things to exploit here. Despite recent improvements, Dallas still struggles to score - particularly whenever Luka is sitting - and their defense can only be defined as porous. We should be coming in fired up from that last loss and ready to recoup. Let's hope that's the attitude the team is taking.
