This was all an elaborate ploy by AD to get rid of Dell and get a good draft pick.
In all seriousness though, if they somehow manage to mend the damage that has been done, he needs to remain as second fiddle to Jrue. The team played so much better with Jrue as the unquestioned leader. After the adjustment period, when AD started playing again, he even played better in many of those games. He would have put up some absolute monster games had he played full minutes. The offense even flowed a lot better.
If Anthony wish to stay, by any means the organization should make it happen. If we draft a small forward (Cameron Reddish), reclaim Rajon Rondo, acquire Robin Lopez or JaVale McGee and make a strong offer for Malcolm Brogdon that the Bucks would not match (I expect that they will want to re-sign Khris Middleton) the Pelicans could be a top two, three or four team in the west next year. Easily, if Kelvin Durant leaves the Warriors for New York.
Rondo/Brogdon/Jackson
Holiday/Moore/Miller
Davis/Randle/Diallo
Cameron Reddish(draft)/Williams/Johnson/Hill
Lopez/Okafor
Holiday
Moore
Davis
Jackson
Okafor
Randle (opt in)
wood
Hill
Williams
Bertran
= 92.1 Mil
Rondo (5Mil)
Brogdon (15 Mil Per x 4 with player's option on last year)
Miller (3 Mil Per x 3)
Diallo (2.2 Mil Per x 3)
Cameron Reddish(draft) (2.6 Mil Per x 3)
Johnson (release him)
Lopez (14 Mil Per x 2 with player's option on last year)
= 41.8 Mil
Total = 133.9 Mil League: Cap Maximum: $101,869,000
Luxury Tax Threshold: $123,733,000
Options To get under the Luxury Tax by the end of the season:
1) Trade Solomon Hill by the end of the trade deadline can add some of the 6 second round picks we have to sweeten the deal.
2) Trade Moore (take nothing back) and release Bertran or Okafor by the end of the trade deadline.
3) Trade Moore and Hill to a tanking team and take back no salary but some second round picks.

First, Randle will not opt in. Second, if we have $92.1 million in salary committed, there will be cap holds for Diallo and Miller that probably would out us up to about $97-$98 million assuming we relinquish rights to Payton and Johnson. We would not be allowed to exceed the cap to sign free agents. If we hold onto the cap holds of one of the players, we would be over the cap and only have the MLE to spend (so at a minimum, Lopez and Brogdon would not be possible). Also, we would probably prefer to keep Payton over Rondo.
To put it into full perspective, the lineup here is as follows:
PG: Rondo/Brogdon
SG: Holiday/Moore/Jackson
SF: Reddish/Williams
PF: Davis/Randle/Diallo
C: Lopez/Okafor/Wood
That team isn't anything special, at all. It's certainly not $134m special.
Rondo is 34 next season and has shown an absolute disdain for defense and effort, particularly in the regular season, for a long time now. He was benched late in a lot of games for us, for good reason. His advanced stats all tell the same story: teams are better without him on the court.
Giving Brogdon $60m!!! with a player's option is ridiculous.
Reddish probably won't be available with our pick, especially if our pick falls to 9 or something.
Lopez for $14m? You really wanna tie up $30m per season in Brook Lopez and Malcolm Brogdon? That's like, almost a third of the salary cap on two supporting-level players. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'm totally okay with going into the luxury tax, and I'm totally fine with paying a little more than you'd want for a player if you believe they're the guy to tip you over the edge from 'good team' to 'contending team'. But do Brogdon and Lopez do that? No, they don't.
This lineup isn't the worst possible lineup I could picture, of course not, but it's not something you'd want as your goal, ESPECIALLY not for $134m!!!
Also, I can't even entertain any roster scenario involving AD here without a contract extension first. He gone.
It's all moot, anyways. He didn't mean it. He's just saying generic junk to save face and we're slightly entertaining it because the chick he was trying to leave us for is a dumpster fire. He might be rethinking LA but he isn't coming back here. He just wants the public to think he's a good dude.
And like it was said before, you can't trust him now. So no way do we keep him unless he signs long term this offseason. And no way does he sign a long term deal with us this offseason. This ship has sailed and there is zero chance he is here come opening night.
Hmmmm…. Due diligence?
Don’t assume David Griffin’s first order of business is to trade Anthony Davis from Pelicans. First, he’ll pitch him on staying @TheAthleticNBA https://t.co/jxlJEFysik

You can't just luxury tax new players like that though. You push into the luxury tax when you've already built your core, and you're extending people, or using bird rights. Not when you're trying to put together a roster for the first time. Cavs had Lebron James, Kyrie on a budget deal, and Love getting extended using bird rights. We can't do that stuff. We'd have AD supermaxed, Jrue earning almost $26m. That's legitimately like $65m on just those guys. We'd also still have the final year of Hill's contract on the books this summer, so can't use that. Don't have Elfrid or Randle's bird rights, or early bird rights.
Not at all the same situation.
Maybe we all just need to be adults for the best of the franchise.
If you Jimmer it, they will come.
Still win/win. If he did for some reason sign his value would be even higher in a year and you trade him then. That could be a best case scenario (unless we get a slam dunk Boston or Zion trade).
Would hate to do that. Would mean wasting a complete year of the franchise. We'd be frozen in place, knowing nothing mattered about it, half-bitter from AD's trade request in the first place and half-annoyed that we couldn't just move on. The rebuild is already going to take a year or two, even if it's more of a re-fit than a tear-down, and I'm not a fan of the idea of sticking another 'wasted year' on the front end of it just so that AD can get his big cash and stall out the future of the franchise.
AD: Wasting One More Year Of The Pelicans Fans' Time, Just For Old Time's Sake
Dude. Stop. Control yourself.
I didn't say it was the same situation. I didn't say this year. You are so unbearably awful at rebuttals to arguments that don't even exist. (all while claiming others do the same)
Fact: Cavs spent the most money in 2016
Fact: Cavs won the C-word in 2016
Opinion based on those facts: We will spend money leading us to a luxury tax in order to get to a C-word.
