NOLA Sugar Bowl’s Economic Impact Is “sweet” To City And State

NEW ORLEANS, La. ----- The January 1, 2003 Nokia Sugar Bowl and its festival events produced an economic impact of $175.98 million for the city and state according to a study completed by University of New Orleans economist Dr. Timothy Ryan.

“This study indicates that college football fans were still willing to travel to New Orleans and take in all that this great city has to offer, despite the uncertain economy,” said Conrad Meyer, IV, president of the Nokia Sugar Bowl and its volunteer membership. “That speaks well for our world-class hospitality industry.”

On January 1st of this year the Sugar Bowl Committee hosted the University of Georgia and Florida State University in a Bowl Championship Series matchup. A crowd of 74,269 was on hand in the Louisiana Superdome for the contest and nearly 85 percent of that group came from outside the state of Louisiana.

Not really. Keep in mind of the LSU fan not living in Louisiana. Some will come down to New Orleans even without a ticket for the game,

Even with LSU, this Sugar Bowl is poised to be the largest, biggest, and best Sugar Bowl for New Orleans in history. It is a big national championship. It is likely to be the best Sugar Bowl for hotels in this area ever---keep in mind how "big" this game is to LSU fans and alumni. I have friends who work in hotels and this year is going to be "phenomenal." So many are coming to New Orleans, that we don't have the supply to meet the demand. Over 1 million out of town guests are expected in New Orleans from January 1 to January 5 this year according to a report I heard on Channel 4 news last week. That number is staggering and puts this near Mardi Gras, although Mardi Gras is still much larger than 1 million out of town guests.
