A trade is guaranteed. Just the who and the where are in question.

Forgot the most agonizing question: the when.

"I'm not going to allow my putative owner to answer that question, this is an NBA related press conference. Paul Tagliabue and Roger Goodell have collectively sung their praises of Tom and if uh ESPN has a problem with that tell Mr. Skipper to call me at my office."

based on the trade machine - Melvin Ely cannot be traded until 14th July. So officially Asik's trade or any other trade including Ely cannot be completed until then.

I know that it is not 'news' but it makes sense when You will remember info that Asik will complete the paperwork on 15th July...

Good catch. I never thought he would still be under a restriction.

What's weird is that I just messed with the trade machine yesterday and this restriction isn't on there. But this is correct. A newly signed free agent cannot be traded until 3 months after they originally signed, UNLESS it's a S&T. But let's face it, anyone trading for Ely would be so they could cut him. Looks like Ely won't be gone until the 14th. Only way we get the Asik deal done before then is if Demps can figure out a trade that works without Ely's contract.

Only the Asik trade? Or is more in the works?

It will be more complex than just Asik for the 1st. Will go down the morning of the 13th.

This two week nightmare will be over. Summer league games and transactions coming soon to a message board near you!!

Is this based off something you heard or are you extrapolating the 13th date based off of intuition?

Well if something is going down on the 13th it doesn't include Ely, unless it will be agreed to/announced on the 13th and wont be made official until the next day.

    Not true.

I remind you that the clause says 90 days. Not 3 months.

    http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q94

    94. When can a team trade a free agent it signs? Do they have to keep him forever?

Generally a team only has to keep a player for three months after signing a contract or December 151 of that season, whichever is later
The only time that doesn't apply is in a S&T

In addition, teams cannot trade players under the following circumstances:

For three months or until December 15 of that season (whichever is later) after signing a contract as a free agent or matching an offer sheet to a restricted free agent. This obviously does not apply to the trade completing a sign-and-trade transaction (see question number 90).

I know it's wikiepedia but it says the same thing:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_salary_cap

If a newly signed player is not part of a sign-and-trade, his new team cannot trade him until December 15 of the calendar year in which he was signed or three months after the date on which he signed, whichever arrives later.
Please tell me if this 3 month rule only applies to off season acquisitions, then it would make sense. Trade Machine is saying the 14th as well.

I think they are using standard terms there. 90 days is more absolute. Months are all different.

Either way, a person with know how said the 13th and when asked when Ely can be traded, he specifically said the 13th as well.

    We will see.

Does that mean that a trade/trades have already been agreed to and they are just announcing it on Sunday? I mean saying the 13th in the morning is pretty specific to have to agree to terms on the fly.

Well even though we don't know all the pieces involved (clearly Babbitt and Ely) I'd still say that is pretty exciting news. Now we know the when. Just a few more days of speculation the whos.

Maybe the date does not matter as I would assume NBA offices are closed on Sunday (so the "transaction" would not be official until Monday when the office is open for business).

I think we have a pretty good idea. If this info was told to MM now, the timing with the Austin Rivers post I think is no accident. It also makes the most sense since Rivers is viewed as having the most potential out of the smaller contracts on our team. I don't think it's a big leap to figure that Rivers, Ajinca, Ely, Babbitt are the pieces going out.

Now the real question is are they just dumping Rivers or will we be getting an asset back (other than keeping. MLE BA)?
