Thread: Pelicans finalizing trade for Asik

  1. #176
As a Pels fan, I'd like to ask that everyone not overreact. We have no clue right now what the protection on the pick is since it's been all over the place. Let's just analyze Asik now and the pick later since we don't have the full details.

It's not about wanting more, it's about understanding value and we're pretty much trying to hand them a championship. All they need to do now is trade Lin -- they can now use their pick + our pick + whatever to unload him. Then, according to reports dealing with salary cap, they may have a starting 5 of

    LeBron
    Harden
    Parsons
    Carmelo
    Dwight

I actually don't mind this (well, I do on a greater level) because it benefits us. But if the pick isn't top 10 protected, it's a ridiculously stupid trade because there's always the chance Asik plays for one f'n year. I don't care if the pick is 12 or even 10 in next year's draft -- it's the decent chance that it's in the 4-6 range.

Houston can't get both James and Anthony without trading Harden or Dwight.

I doubt that happens.... Lebron is either going to Cleveland or Miami and I see Melo either going to Bulls

As far as a basketball move. I like the deal. Asik perfectly complements our roster. Dell just has no idea of value, or basketball economics, or maybe negotiation. It's frustrating

It's like only the next year matters and draft picks and cap space are monopoly money

man im torn on this move for sure...top 20 protected? love it. 4-19 and rockets take it? hate it..period...we better have some assurance from asik to extend his contract as well. so, many variables for this move to be considered a good one or bad one.

    I don't think we're even done yet.

But this deal basically says "2015 playoffs or bust." Which fits with the offseason narrative from Davis and such.

Not quite sure what to think yet, but you have to think the deal has better protection than 4-19
    Jrue dat

Dell cant be dumb enough to give a 4-19 pick for a one year rental for a player they want to dump and pay him 7 mill extra after all what happened this season. I refuse to believe that I know he wants to save his job but I cant see ownership signing off on that the 11-20 sounds more reasonable for both sides.

  13. #188
Don't forget we would have Asik's bird rights.

  14. #189
    its not 4-19, its 10-19

I'm going to trust Lowe when he says it's top 2/3s of the lottery protected and 20+ (meaning somewhere in 14-19 range going to HOU... all others staying w/ NOLA) than the other reports until proven otherwise

    We can only hope...

I cannot believe you guys are complaining. There was a 40 page thread a year ago about trading ANDERSON for Asik, and we got him just now for a pick that would likely not even contribute to our team. Think of it this way. Our core is basically set, and with the accelorated growth of AD we are ready to win in 1-2 years. We have a starting lineup with powerhouse players at all positions now, EXCEPT the 3. So what do y'all expect to get from this magical 1st round pick next year if it were to fall at say...13? Do you expect us to draft a 3 that can just start from day 1? That happens on the rarest of rare occasions.

If you are worried about the lack of development of young players to start filling out the bottom of the roster, know that when we are pushing for championships in 2017-2018 we will have those picks and the lineup to train them slow as the spurs do.

    Everyone truly overvalues draft picks.

Basically, this team needs to be a top 6 team in the West or something like that to keep our pick if 4-19 means Houston gets it, correct? And it hamstrings our ability to trade a 2016 pick as well?

Hope our next move is a doozy then.

  19. #194
Look Rockets were gonna trade Asik and clear up space regardless. They are not going to trade him to a division rival for just a 2nd rd pick. So we had to come off the pick. Asik is a perfect fit. Better to have a Center and no pick. Than a pick when we need a center.

  20. #195
I ask myself does Asik push the needle to make this team a playoff team and honestly I don't feel comfortable the answer is a certain yes. Therefore I'm not thrilled about this deal. It makes us better now than before the deal. Looking at the landscape in the West does this make us better than Dallas, Phoenix, Portland, Golden State, or Memphis I just don't know.

This is what some people seem to be misunderstanding.

  22. #197
So here is the official protection guys:

Yes. Can now confirm protection. Will be between 4 and 20. RT @jelvig1: @Jonathan_Feigen Hearing the pick is slotted for #4-19. Confirm?
So if for someone reason they get a top 3 pick (highly unlikely), they get the pick, and the same for if we land the 20th or lower.

So this in fact DOES protect the most valuable parts (4-19) of the draft.

Totally fine with giving up a pick in the twenties.

LOL @ some folks in here... this is supposed to be the deepest draft in years and you see damm near every team in the top 10 trying to trade the pick.

Next year's draft won't be half as good as this one and people are whining about giving up a pick for a guy that just might put us over the top (and get us in the playoffs). Asik is one of the better defensive bigs in the league that rebounds like crazy.

But nah we don't need him let's keep our draft pick that we might want to trade anyway lol!

I love this trade. Him and AD are gonna be sick on our front line, and we FINALLY get a big that can board. Good job Dell.
