Actually this is a much better play. He'll get much more pub playing for a championship caliber team for one season. If he holds up and especially if he plays well he'll be a hot commodity the following year and potentially a world champ. He'll get his big contract. The money he's leaving on the table will be peanuts by comparison.

It's not that clear cut because the odds are against him bouncing back and impressing opposing scouts. He could have gotten about triple the minimum here regardless of whether he played ten games or fifty. Certainly it's a gamble that may pay off huge down the road, but let's not pretend that such a decision is fiscally viable.

He's betting on himself. I can't fault the guy for that.

People are discussing and reading reaction to Oden choosing Miami. It's been -- what -- an hour and a half?

If you're not into it, why stay in the thread? There are others.

I'd like to thank PR readers for taking the time to sort through all the BSS tweets today, read them all, and take them on their face . . . meaning don't overreact to information that is part of a larger conversation and is said to be suspect in some way by taking it as fact.

    Not everyone has this capacity.

Some people saw these tweets as a disservice. I hope you found them as intended: properly communicated info to add and judge on its own merits.

Thanks. It's a credit to you all.

In all fairness, you did a great job at keeping expectations tempered and encouraged everyone to look at the bigger picture of what was going on, rather than taking the information at face value. It was a fun day

    That was the goal.

Let's hope we have better uses for that cash!

my last comments on this thread....In retrospect, it appears this whole thing played out very logically... from the outset, Miami was obviously the place he wanted to be....the only question was whether he could afford to go this route or not (and apparently they managed to appease him with their final contract offer)....my problem was thinking that we were the "underdog" (which we probably were initially) when it was Miami that had to make up some lost ground....I have absolutely no problem with Oden and I wish him well (I have a feeling he might need more than my wishes though....).

Regardless this offseason was awesomeness. Didn't we use whine about not much being done in the offseason?

It just pisses me off that he's gonna let Lebron revive his career instead of doing it by himself and making a name for himself.

I think the nba needs to stick to a salary cap these big market teams are killing the fun in this league . Lakers already getting ready to go after Lebron , Melo it's ridiculous

I bet Greg Stiemsma is happier than most Heat "fans" at the fact he's not coming here.

Why even let that bother you?

I wanted Oden to sign with us; but now that he's with the Heat -- and i'm kinda stunned by my LACK of disappointment that chose them over us -- I realize that it was "the chase" that I was enthralled with, not really Oden. He likely wouldn't have been a difference-maker on whichever team he chose, including ours. He's already admitted tonight he's not 100%.

    I feel kind of used.

Weird that with all my anticipation, I fully realized that he'd probably not be great. Not sure what I was thinking.

This sums it up really well. I more wanted to beat the Heat than just straight up get Oden. lol

Oden and DAVIS would've been a hideous duo.

"I don't know if people know — I dislocated my pinkie finger. And [Tyreke] told me, 'You wanna go home or you wanna be here?' I want to be here. And he said, 'All right, then go tape it up and let's play. Let's go. We not stoppin' at no stores. Straight gas. That's what we do, just keep going.'"

I agree with the people saying he is a fool for not taking over twice what the Heat offered him by coming the Pelicans. He has a real shot to flop and never get another contract. Why turn down over 2 million dollars?

For a chance to make 10 million+ next year. The Pelicans may have gave him more money upfront, but we also wanted a team option that would have kept him locked up for two seasons if he stays healthy. With Miami, he gets the player's option and will most likely opt out after the season.

Why do you think he took less money? For something far more important. A player's option.

Some people just have love for the game and would rather be a champion. LeBron, DWade, and Bosh all took pay cuts so they could become champions and have their legacy carry on. Trust me I wanted Oden on the team as much as anyone else but I understand the move in a way. Money comes and goes but your legacy can last forever.
