Are you American? If you're 27 and American...it would be highly unusual to not know that. Was just curious

Did you not watch Apollo 13?

I love the Pelicans name... but I still believe Celtics and 76ers are 2 of the best names in Sports. With regards to ties to the city and historical relevance

I think the real quote was "Houston, we've had a problem".

    2. Mavericks - also no problem, it refers to an unbranded range animal, hence Dallas, Texas. Ranch town
I think Maverick in the sport sense refers to the people Mavericks..i.e. the Lone Rangers, Outlaws and such.

I was going to post about Houston being the home of mission control for NASA, but too late...

And I always heard the Bobcats were named after Robert "Bob" Johnson, the former owner of both both the team and BET.

I read that was never confirmed. Of course if it is the truth though I'd see why he'd never confirm it.

Oh and for Chicago, the Bull refers to Chicago's long standing place as the center of commodity (beef, corn, pork bellies, wheat) trading...i.e.Bulls/Bears in the stock market, which might explain the name of the football team.

Didn't look any of this up but I'm willing to bet this is the case.

    Nailed it.

The name denoted strength and power, and it tied in to the city’s meatpacking tradition and the Chicago Amphitheater’s (first home court of the Bulls) proximity to the famed Chicago Stockyards. The one-syllable directness of the Bulls was also in line with Chicago’s other team nicknames—Bears, (White) Sox, Cubs, and (Black) Hawks.

“We were the meat capital of the world,” said Klein at the time. “At first, I was thinking of names like Matadors (funny how that worked out given today’s Matadors) or Toreadors, but if you think about it, no team with as many as three syllables in its nickname has ever had much success except for the Canadians. I was sitting around the house, kicking these names around with my wife and three sons, when my little son Mark said, ‘Dad, that’s a bunch of bull!’ I said, ‘That’s it! We’ll call them the Bulls!’ And that’s how the team got its nickname.”

The Bears came from the baseball team being the Cubs. Not even close on that one.

I thought I knew my animals, but had no idea there were Bobcats in the Carolinas.

The more I say it and hear it the more I like the Pelicans. I could see why nationally it would be somewhat a joke. If you could possibly look at it from outside of the state and not being a fan, I think most would have the same reaction, "really the Pelicans?", but it will become an after thought in a few years IMO. I still preferred the Krewe, but thats an after thought as well and love the Pelicans! Looking forward to many winning seasons and a future championship as the New Orleans Pelicans!

Not sure which team name is my favorite, but the New Orleans Jazz is probably my favorite all time. I will never care for Utah as long as they are called the Jazz! Darn you Utah!

Orlando Magic...Orlando home of Disney World, the MAGIC Kingdom. And you already got schooled on Houston Rockets. And like someone else said Toronto Raptors was cuz of Jurassic Park. I voted on it as a teen myself.

Yes it does. There's a NASA space center in Houston. Rockets makes perfect sense. Astros does too.

Emeka Okafor - Joe Smith - Carmelo Anthony - Manu Ginobili - Jason Williams

Al Jefferson - James Posey - Aaron McKie - Shaun Livingston

It was a pretty active space station. And that quote is regarding the city of Houston.
