Thread: Davis vs Drummond "An Imparital By-The-Numbers Look"

  1. #1

Question Davis vs Drummond "An Imparital By-The-Numbers Look"

    Just to start:

Player GP MPG FG% FT% RPG APG BPG STLPG PPG
    Davis 53 28.1 51% 74% 7.9 .9 1.8 1.1 13.1
    Drummond 50 19.7 59% 37% 7.5 .5 1.7 .9 7.3

So here you see Davis is better in almost ever facet of the game. Next advanced stats:

    Player OffRtg DefRtg oReb% dReb% Reb% Ast% AstRatio ToRatio eFg% Ts% Usg%
    Davis 102.2 107.3 10.2% 23.2% 16.6% 5.7% 6.5 9.99 50% 54.6% 21.7%
    Drummond 104 104.6 15.9% 26% 21.2% 3.8% 6 10.37 59.6% 56.6% 16.5%

Clearly here, Drummond posts the better advanced stats even if minor in some areas. I was a little surprised at the results, so I decided to take the next step and analyzing the shooting stats and distribution.

    Player RstArea% Paint% Mid% RstDist PaintDist MidDist
    Davis 67% 47% 28% 51.8% 15.2% 31.8%
    Drummond 65% 25% 8% 87.1% 7.4% 4.8%

    Key:
    RstArea% = Shooting% in the restricted area
    Paint% = Shooting% in the paint
    Mid% = Shooting% in mid range
RstDist = % of shots taken in restricted area
PaintDist = % of shots taken in the paint
MidDist = % of shots taken in midrange

This is where it all started to make sense, and actually surprised me again. Drummond posts the better OffRtg and TS% so I expected him to crush Davis in the paint, but Drummond is worse in every position on the court offensively and has no range outside of a dunk in the Restricted area. Davis is more efficient around the rim, in the paint, and in the mid range game.

It is clear Davis has the more robust offensive game, and is light years ahead of Drummond when it comes to contributing on offense. While Davis's defense isn't at Drummond levels in terms of advanced stats, I can only imagine the havoc Davis would do with Drummond's size, but that isn't something I can measure, so I will close with one final statement:

Davis is the better player by the numbers, I think. Both players have crazy potential, and it's why most on here was hoping Drummond dropped one more spot in the draft. We'd be deadly with this two as our front court.

I was originally going to post this in response to a thread post, but I felt the 45-60 minutes I spent on this can have it's own thread.

    Please discuss.

Ignore DefRtg. It takes way too much context to make it a useful stat in a comparison like this. I'm talking multiple paragraphs to compare that one stat between both players and get a reasonable assessment out of it. It is too team and lineup dependent.

Is the first block of stats per36 or something? Because those are crazy rebounding numbers for Drummond, if not.

e: and holy ****, AD has a much higher usage rate. Those of you complaining about touches for him need to take a look at that number.

Davis is averaging nine more minutes which is pretty big ... those bulk stats look a little better for Drummond in some areas, like rebounding, etc.

Both guys are doing insanely good though considering their age. If the league redrafted those two would go 1-2. Davis still ahead, but Drummond has shown he's a fantastic prospect and a steal at No. 9.

I don't think you understand how these stats work.

Where did the usage % come from? I've checked 2 sites and neither have his usage quite that high.

Not sure what having a more robust offensive game means, but Drummond has been better on offense than Davis this year.

No he hasn't. Drummond has no offensive game whatsoever. He just gets put backs from his offensive rebounds. He has no shot and no post game, and he can't hit FTs to save his life.

The biggest difference is that Drummond already has an NBA ready body, while Davis won't until a few years from now. That gives Drummond a huge advantage as a rookie, yet Davis is still outperforming him.

man, we barely missed out on paul george and drummond, oh could u imagine...

Drummond will never be a 30 mpg player in this league with the way he shoots free throws.

And Anthony Davis's value will go through the roof once he builds a little bit of bulk (say 20 lbs) and slides into the Center position permanently. There's no one in this league at that position anywhere near as talented as he is, while there are plenty of talented PFs.

Davis can score from anywhere inside the FT line and does it better than Drummond. Drummond takes 87% of his shots in the restricted circle... Davis has more potential.

    NBA.com

I had a typo on Davis' usage. Instead of 27% it was 21.7%. Sorry for that.

Davis's extra minutes can be attributed to being better on offense and able to hit FTs. I think it just takes Davis up another step. He won't hurt you the more he plays. Drummond has a lot of work to do to catch up to Davis on offense even if the numbers on the surface say slightly otherwise.

To me Drummond celling is D. Jordan from the Clippers, maybe with a better post game.

Drummond will be really solid. He keeps working he could be the best player on a very good team and make a few all star games. His ceiling is sky high.

But Davis will have a better career. robably much better. I'm willing to bet that Davis will be in discussion for all star status in his sophmore year.

No way that is his ceiling. I think Drummond in 4 years will be talked about as the #2 player out of 2012 draft behind Davis.

U have no clue {Mod edit-ease up on the language and personal attack} ur talking about. Smdh?..Drummond can't shoot a jumper or even a dam 4ft shot...all he has is his dunking and put back ability. You can't pass Drummond the ball and let him work for his points. He can't create a shot for himself. Davis can do all that. So please explain how Drummond is better than Davis on offense. Ur avgs 7ppg
