Advice on hotel

My wife has a seminar this week in New Orleans for her job. Her company is putting her at the Sheraton's in Metairie but we want to stay one more night and do more stuff in the downtown area. What hotels do you guys recommend?

I'd compare that to staying at one a little away and just cabbing to and from downtown, or taking the streetcar, but don't assume the St. Charles line is up at all locations . . .

If you just want to be around and enjoy the food, a B&B in the Marigny may be the ticket.

Yeah we want to go somewhere where we can walk around and eat and shop for one afternoon. I haven't lived in NOLA since 2001 and may go once a year since I live 3 hours away and our families are in Lake Charles and Houston.

I'd bite the bullet and stay at a place in the quarter. A quick search on hotels.com showed some reasonable rates, but just understand that there are hidden fees to all of them . . . parking, some amenities fee.

Get something off Royal or Chartres Street. It'll make itself worth it. Royal has a CC's and all those galleries (another hidden fee!), and the food is everywhere.

I just checked, and the line on St. Charles seems fine all the way to Jefferson, so those options are on the table if you want them.

The Roosevelt is a great place to stay, and it's a short cab ride away (about 5 bucks at most) from Antoine's. They also have a sazerac bar in the hotel - great spot for an after dinner drink. John Besh's restaurant Domenica is also inside the hotel, and it's a great spot to grab lunch the next day before you head back home. It's his Italian restaurant, and the pizza is innovative and amazing (love the pork shoulder and apple pizza). In terms of shopping and walking, Canal street isn't far away at all, so you guys could head over there. Bourbon is only a few streets over as well.

Go to Priceline and bid on a four star room. My wife and I sometimes stay downtown some weekends, and Priceline works great. We usually stay in the Warehouse District, which gives you a chance to walk to the Quarter if you want and is usually cheaper

If anyone ever wants restaurant advise for Baton Rouge, The Advocate several years ago had a nice write up on Chilis. It is probably worth checking out.

If you're staying for only one night you probably want to be down in the french quarter. My advice would be the Hotel Monteleone. It's the hotel that houses the Carousel Bar (it spins like a carousel, but slowly). Its been in tons of books and its where Hemingway liked to stay when he would come to New Orleans.

Location is absolutely perfect and it should be in your budget depending on what night you're planning on staying.

Royal Sonesta, Sheraton on Canal, JW Marriot on canal, the W in the french quarter are all pretty good...
