Rivers looked almost good enough to replace Vasquez last nightGet well lil buddy!
Ya Vasquez won't be playing for us next year and lopez has maybe1 year left w us unless we draft or sign a center or a good package deal comes for him
I'll admit that Rivers has improved since day 1 but with how bad he was, he couldn't get any worse. Also, I think because everyone here is rooting for Rivers success that we overvalue every little improvement that he makes. If Rivers' career arc was exactly the same but he played in Charlotte, there's not 1 person here that would be saying that his future looks bright. You'd be like everyone else in the country and think he's a bum. To each his own but IMO, Rivers' will be a long term bench role player on some team. Monty needs to start winning now and to do so, he needs a competent PG on both sides of the ball and we currently do not have that.
Just to stay on topic, Rivers should get more minutes than Roberts simply b/c he'll be here longer. No need to invest in Roberts if he's not going to be here.
Alot of Rivers hate on here... sheez. Rivers might be the only guy on the roster that can consistently beat his man off the dribble. not even Eric Gordon can create off the dribble as well as Rivers. That's something we haven't had since CP was here.
Of course he has alot to work on, but he has the work ethic and drive to become a better player. That's something you can't deny. haters.
I think you meant to say, "Rivers was easily good enough to replace Vasquez last night"
Also Slim, don't let people call you condescending or anything. Most of us appreciate you bringing actual basketball points into the conversation and your points are valid. We get that you were aiming those "sentences" at the AR25 haters.
Whether you're as enthused about it as others, there IS improvement. I wanted him to get better at ONE thing only and that's finishing at the basket. Something that even smaller players can do with regularity. And he has.
The next thing will be bringing in that elbow and developing a mid-range game ala Stephen Curry.
He's looking better to me than I thought he could ever look this early on. I thought he was gonna be a solid to rim attacking guard who could make a few assists here and there, probably at best be a 14 ppg 5 or 6 assists guy but he's already shown that he can be a little better than that possibly. He's looking like a bigger more defensive minded tony parker. If we're following something similar to the Spurs model, he's an integral part of it. If dell believes he can be good next year, we can flip GV and whoever for something good and still have space left to potentially sign a big-time player and still have a draft pick. If Austin is apart of the plans and pans out, sky's the limit with his team.
R.I.P. to HunnyB/FlyGirl
We'll see how big the plans are for him are come draft day.![]()
Hopefully his man body starts filling in, i reserve judgment until then. He's playing at a disadvantage right now, he has the same body now he had through high school.
He's a kid playing against men, you've seen it before... unlike Curry, he doesn't have an elite skill (shooting) to fall back on, something to get him by until things come together and he grows up.
We know now that he doesn't have elite speed or quickness, which neutralizes his really good handles, the lack of allows defenders to recover. The good thing is, at his age, he can get faster and quicker and learn to manipulate the defense with his dribble.
Once he's on equal ground physically with the guys he's playing against and we can see what his max will be as a fully grown man, we'll really know what we have, at that point we can critique his skill set, which by then should put him well above average for an NBA guard, his skills will develop ahead of his body.
I think the rough times he's had this year will pay off little by little, every year for the next few years.
My biggest worry with Rivers is his very low assist/steals numbers even over his final 15 games of good play. If he's going to play PG, you'd like to see him at least eclipse that 3 APG mark as a reserve.
That said, he's shown an ability to get to the basket all season and recently started finishing for buckets. He developed that floater. He's not shooting the 3 much, but he improved his accuracy. And for a guy that handled the ball good deal, he rarely turned it over. That last point and the improved shooting made him a positive IMO as a rotation guy over the last month+.
He added things to his game and improved a lot in-season, also after a LOT of failure and ridicule. One of the reasons Monty Williams was supposedly so high on him was that he knew him well from his relationship with Doc and he felt the kid "got it" mentally. Austin Rivers has shown that he's mentally tough, if nothing else, to bounce back like he did from the early failure.
