Thread: 2024 PELICANS Summer League Schedule & Gameday thread!

This team is going to start the year with two guys at center who couldn't even dominate Summer League. They played well in spots, but this is a Griffin recipe for disaster for Green.

They just need to do their role. Not dominate. We have 4 already who will put up 15-25+ pts a night. Plus another 2 with 10-15+.

Summer league isn't about who puts up big numbers it's finding those to complement our stars already.

Honestly we just need them to be able to defend and rebound. Missi just needs as many minutes as possible. He’s so underdeveloped but has tons of raw talent. Also make no mistake, these guys in SL are not starting at center in the regular season. If we don?t make a move and the roster stays as currently constructed it will be DT or Zion if they choose to go small so you can have both CJ/Herb starting.

Assuming 20 something min out of Theis and Zion playing some of his minutes at center we need 10 min from Missi or Matkovic. That's for the times when those 2 guys are healthy, when one goes down we could be looking at significant minutes from 1 or both of those guys. It probably will be rough at times but I agree we have enough scorers on the floor that we just need the bigs to do pick and rolls, rebound, and protect the rim. Hopefully Missi can be coached up to handle that despite being essentially new to basketball.

I saw what I needed from the players I needed to see. We already know Hawk and what he needs to work on. Reeves looked very comfortable on drives and finished well. He has a nice low center of gravity and will take it to the rim. Gotta see him more from the 3. Karlo looks like he could be useful. Again, have to see him prove it in the NBA. Missi looks active and athletic like we expect him to be. Looks like he is capable of growing his interior game. He looks comfortable at the line though everybody kinda struggled there tonight. A couple of other standouts but nothing much. Hall and Houser may be worth a look. Nothing really special from the others.

The offseason isn't over yet. Griff said that the roster is not set until training camp, or even after. They are going to make another move, possibly for a C or more, and maybe with a team or teams we haven't even thought about that much.

They have 15 on the roster now but add more for training camp. I wonder about what they are going to do with the center position. It sparks curiosity.

If no trade, this lineup is what I would like to see a lot of.

    DJM / Herb / BI / TM3 / Z

Summer league dominance means very little. You are playing with a bunch of guys you just met.

The one thing the Summer League can demonstrate is the need for growth. These guys have a lot of work to get significant minutes. They will be going up against the best in the West, with Looney being the likely weakest. I liked what I saw, but Mackovic had 7 turnovers (8 for Hawkins). A lot of this "small ball" will be against some of the best inside games in the league. I hope it works. If it doesn't, coaching changes are on the horizon.

We also when from Vinson to Myles so that needs to come into consideration as well as this summer league team is way less loaded than some of our other ones. Agreed completely that it is all about development which is why Jordan is seeing so much of the ballhandling. He needs to protect his dribble more (maybe go lower with it?) and needs to work on finishing over other players. Reeves showed good promise there because he not only would beat his man but he would change his shot to avoid getting blocked. Jordan needs to be a bit less predictable and do the same.

Karlo Matkovic is a significantly better player than Yves Missi right now.

They left Matkovic open and dared him to shoot a 3... he knocked it down. Have the announcers saying its making more sense why the Pelicans let Jonas walk.

Matkovic leading a comeback for the Pels. Hitting pick and roll dunks, mid range and perimeter shots, and not forcing it either, making the right play each time. Wait a minute now.

I think As of now Theis and Marco would get the bulk of the "true 5" minutes when we're not going small. Missi would get mop-up minutes while he develops. We'll get killed on the boards though.

Bad game from Jordan Hawkins but great job by whoever drew up the play to get him an open look to tie the game.

Has anyone seen anything in Hawkins over this last year that would give you confidence he can be a contributor? His size hurts him on offense and his ballhandling precludes him from ever being a good driver to the basket. Additionally he doesn’t seem to have the dawg in him that is needed from a player his size to compete. Let’s not even get started on his defense which isn’t worthy of a highschooler at this point. Two years in a row this team blows their first round pick on a G, Hawkins and Daniels before him. Maybe Griffin thought he could combine the two.

I?d like to see Murray take more of the point of attack responsibilities away from Herb so that Herb can be the effective center against the finesse bigs of the NBA. Imagine trying to effectively run any pick and roll where Herb is the guy hedging.

Matko looks like he could soak NBA minutes but I?d be surprised if he even beat out JRE.

Why?? What does Robison Earl do better than Matkovich? Did you see how hard Matkovich was rolling to the rim after setting screens? Finished multiple lob dunks that way and opened up floaters for Ford too just from the threat of it. He had 3 blocks and led the team in rebounds (although he could have done even more there probably). He has the athleticism and effort to get up and down the floor and make plays on both sides of the court. He also has the size to play center, where JRE is out of position and undersized.

This dude is about to be our number 1 option at center. Yes I said it.

He has looked so good that I’m content with him just playing and developing any way. If he starts, that would be great. Just give him 18-20 mins a game minimum and let him develop.
