One day before they open the 2015 season, the New Orleans Saints made six moves to set their roster heading in to Week 1. They are as follows:

  • Tim Hightower (running back) was released
  • Mike McGlynn (guard) was released
  • Davis Tull (defensive end) was placed on injured reserve
  • Seantavius Jones (wide receiver) was signed from the practice squad
  • Toben Opurum (fullback) was signed from the practice squad
  • Don Jones (safety) was signed from the practice squad

The most obvious of these moves that we knew would likely happen was Jones (or any receiver) being signed as the team’s fifth receiver. I believed that Hightower would eventually get released once C.J. Spiller was healthy and ready to get back on the field, so I assume that this move means that the team knows he’ll be ready to go next week. McGlynn wasn’t set to be dressing out for tomorrow’s game, so that’s not a shocker, either. Tull suffered a torn labrum, which is an injury he sustained in college, but on his other shoulder. Opurum and Jones are both players that the Saints would like to contribute on special teams.

Of all the moves, the signing of Seantavius Jones is likely to be the most impactful. He could see a few snaps as the #5 receiver and he too is a big contributor on special teams. The news of Davis Tull is somewhat disappointing, considering how excited the Saints were about his potential as one of their diamond in the rough players out of Tennessee Chattanooga. He had a very solid training camp, but he’ll be forced to have surgery and look forward to next year.
