Second, Knight wouldn't be a "backup." He would start next to Jrue, just like he was signed to start next to Bledsoe. We've been looking for a guard to share ball-handling and playmaking duties next to Jrue. The hope would be Knight is that player. If we're set on keeping Boogie, which we clearly are, we have to win. And if the Pels think they can get tap into Knight's talent and convert him back into a somewhat productive basketball player again, they make the move. It's undisputable that paying 15m to Knight is better than paying 12m to Asik, and would thus constitute a better use of our cap space.
Third, any player is stretchable. It doesn't operate the same way as the amnesty clause. If Knight plays like a piece of turd, and you need the cap for Boogie, or more likely, another player, that option is always available, though obviously less than ideal given the additional length and amount of the contract.
It would be gamble, yes. But at least we would then have the potential for meaningful production using that cap space, as opposed to throwing money in Asik's direction.
