Thread: Uhh, isn't Eric Gordon on the team?

Uhh, isn't Eric Gordon on the team?

The Pelicans just sent out a press release announcing their draft party. Here is word for word what it says,

"The Pelicans have the #6 pick in this years draft and look to add to a roster that features #1 pick Anthony Davis, sharpshooter Ryan Anderson, and floor general Greivis Vasquez."

Strange to anyone else? I mean, isn't Gordon our highest paid player and a potential All-Star according to Dell and Monty? No mention at all? Really?

    Hmmm....

I gotta agree with MM on this. Maybe we're reading too much into it, but there's no good reason to not mention him.

BSS's Michael Pellissier also was on the call Dell had with fans talking about the future and says that Dell never once mentioned Gordon as part of the future.

I don't want to read into things too much, but how can you ignore these things? If you are paying a guy max money and he is in your long term plans, he would be mentioned in something like this right? Is it crazy to read at least something into this?

Considering last year they called him our best player during the shining moment of our draft; I'd say it's really really suspicious.

"I don't know if people know — I dislocated my pinkie finger. And [Tyreke] told me, 'You wanna go home or you wanna be here?' I want to be here. And he said, 'All right, then go tape it up and let's play. Let's go. We not stoppin' at no stores. Straight gas. That's what we do, just keep going.'"

    What about Rivers?

And Vasquez will be on the team...

Well, Anderson was the 2nd best 3pt shooter, Grevis was 2nd in assist, AD was the 2nd best rookie..... EJ wasn't the top 5 in anything.

Probably putting "and injury-prone hearty phoenix resident Eric Gordon" would have spoiled the desired effect

    and oft-injured Eric Gordon?

and the guy who doesn't really want to be here Eric Gordon?

and the guy even we forget is on the team, Eric Gordon?

It's hard to include him in any positive PR at this point. Maybe the reason Dell was so excited the other day is that he's got something up his sleeve regarding Gordon.

    Would you rather the following?

"The Pelicans have the #6 pick in this years draft and look to add to a roster that features #1 pick Anthony Davis, sharpshooter Ryan Anderson, floor general Greivis Vasquez, and often injured but filled with a ton of potential Eric Gordon"

The other explanation is that the PR staff wrote this and since Gordon isn't as fan friendly as the other players mentioned, they forgot or just simply didn't include him. I work in PR and sometimes the simple answer is the right one.

This doesn't phase me at all. He is still a controversial figure with the franchise and hasn't done enough last season to be properly advertised.

The fact that Dell has seemingly dropped off the talk of Gordon as a key piece to the franchise is what gets my inner conspirator thinking. Was he simply beating that drum because he wanted to scare off those who would offer Gordon a max while simotaneously preaching to Gordon that he believed in him while not actually feeling that way whatsoever?

gordon is not a fan favorite at this point..so why mention him in a press release...the other 3 are clearly more popular players...i don't think dell will be tipping his hand to the public like this...is vazquez really part of our future??

I think if they could trade him they would, but guys in the early stages of a max deal who cannot stay healthy are not tradeable.

would it be crazy to read into it saying vazquez is our starting pg of the future?? goes both ways...this is for the fans..you make a marketing scheme based on it...gordon is not a fan favorite right now...common sense imo..would be more surprised if they did mention gordon after his first 2 years with the team

exactly...rivers is not a fan favorite as well..so why mention him...common sense...you don't have to be a marketing expert to know what is going on here

Gordon may be the highest paid player on the team but he's probably the least marketable. I wouldn't be surprised if they did focus groups on fan reactions to players and Gordon didn't make the cut.

It is very conspicuous. I doubt the franchise would just willing gloss over Gordon solely because he isn't Mr. Popular right now. If anything his lack of popularity is even more reason to make sure his name is out there as a part of the future.

I know GM has to be part poker player and not give away tells but this seems very telling. Whether it's meant to be or not is the question.

Guess Gordon's getting traded and talking about Burke is irrelevant because, hey, Vasquez.

    Or something.

If you're paying a guy $15m a year to be a part of your future, you have your marketing staff work on his image and his popularity, you don't have them gloss over the problem by ignoring it and never mentioning the guy. This is after all, ENTERTAINMENT. You can't pay a guy to be a star and not invest in selling him and getting him over with the fans.

If they really wanted to sell him you'd see Gordon doing a few community outreach activities with families and kids. You'd see press releases about how hard Gordon is working this offseason and how he's finally healthy. They'd be setting up one on one Q&A opportunities with local tv, radio, and print. AND they would be reminding the fan base just how important he is to the team by mentioning him and selling him every chance they get.
