    Greivis Vasquez as.. Manu?

I'm posting this in a pretty hot time on the board with many new HornetGuru threads afloat, so hopefully it gets the views and curiosity piquing it deserves.

So I've been meaning to post this for a while. And I here I go.

Greivis Vasquez, a 6'6 guard. A player who has tremendous court vision and relies heavily on the pick and roll, which he executes very well. Something very interesting a friend of mine brought up to me, was that (although this being a whole different animal than the NBA) GV plays exclusively the shooting guard and combo guard for Venezuela and excels. We remember Greivis coming off the bench for JJack in 2011-2012, another role he did very well.

Everyone, when discussing the future, says Austin Rivers will be our Manu/Crawford. And others say he will be our Tony Parker. I believe he'll be like TP. I believe we're building our team like the Spurs, something I've noticed when looking at both teams, and seeing their huge similarities (probably cause of Monty and Pop relation, as well as Dell). And I also can't get help but notice the similarities between Greivis and Manu. Keep in mind, Greivis can't create his shot as well as Manu, but the two are somewhat similar. I dunno.

    Just something I pondered. Discuss.

Yeaah man lol This came across my mind before. He seems to play excellent as a spot up shooter. He would be perfect off the bench, would provide a ton of versatilty and Dell himself said it in a chalk talk or whatever that they may try him at the 3. Either Manu or maybe even a Hedo type role?

i don't like gv much as a scorer. i think he's better suited to dish the rock

Very interesting observation, but I feel like GV might not be here for long, especially if they draft a guard.

Weird. GVs best attribute was his ability to score over smaller guards. I thought he was slow or off in some of his assists. I still like him however and he did have good spot up ability.

So is the idea that we'd play GV at the SG spot and let austin defend the better guard? And trade Gordon for a SF? Or is it to do a 3 guard set with GV guarding the SF?

Let Greivis play third guard off bench and SF in situationals.

As far as the role (saying anyone BECOMES a Manu Ginobili is always a longshot), yeah it's kinda what I envision for him. Good combo guard off the bench, makes plays and hits big shots.

Ooh. You mean Manu in his current role, not in his prime. I'm sorry. I assumed you meant he would be our Manu, Rivers our Parker, and AD our Duncan when they won.

Ofcourse I realize that's tall order for these guys to fill those roles. I just assumed that's what you meant. Yeah I could definitely see GV fill Manu's role especially in its current form. The dude is a first year starter, I fully believe he'll improve over the next couple of years.

GV and Manu Ginobilli don't belong in the same sentence. Let alone the same role. GV is no where near as dynamic a player as Manu, so he wouldn't have nearly the same affect coming off the bench either.

This has crossed my mind numerous times. Especially with the draft coming up and the way I feel Burke fits this team perfectly. I think Vasquez's play stlye meshes well with Burke, Gordon, or Rivers. I say shift GV over to the 2 guard because he can be a scorer or facilitator. There are many situations where the 2 guard can handle the rock. He would be great coming off the bench with Burke or Rivers and would give us one of the deepest back courts in the league. There's no need to ship him off right away. I see posts about packaging him and Lopez but for what. He has high value and will continue too. I think he is the kind of commodity where we know what he will provide and so will other teams. Inevitably a team will have an injury at point guard and will come calling. But like the op said he is a special player and could play a manu role for us. We are so ready to be in contention we are ship off all of our assets. I think Dell has done a great job but he has missed a few times and I believe it has costed us some young valuable assets.

Yeah, it's like rookies/sophomores come here and get the boot after 2 years unless they are potential All-stars. I would like to see us invest more time into the young players.

Who are you guys talking about? Dell has been here 3 yrs and can't find any evidence of this. Ayon? Thornton? Who?

Thorton who we traded for carl landry who we then let walk
collison and losey for trevor ariza (who we then traded because his contract was bad) and belinelli who then walked. Although belli wasnt great im not convinced he wouldnt have been better suited for a bench role or that he was close to his prime
bayless (although he was pretty horrible but no worse than rivers this year) we gave up a first round pick to get him and then traded him to Toronto to get rid of pejas contract. We received JJ but then let him walk
Ayon although im happy with anderson. Was there no other way to complete that trade??
So we trade our young pieces for some veteran pieces but then let the vetrans walk.like I said on a whole I like what dell has done but it almost seems like some moves he makes are just for the sake of making moves.
Who on this forum would not like to have Collison as a backup splitting minutes with GV or thorton backing up an oft injured eric gordon

Dell has been here for 3 years and drafted none of those guys. Which is what was first brought up.

True he didnt draft them but .that dosent mean u flip them cuz u didnt draft them. I think overall we are in a great place for our future but we still have had young talent on this team that we traded away and I dont want vasquez to be the next. He wants to be here and still hasnt maxed out in his potential. Is his celing super high?? NO but he has the making of a solid combo guard. Who is more than capable of stepping in and staring at either position. Having him and rivers being able to play the combo guard roles off the bench is priceless. And thats just off of a skill prespective which dosent take into account the work ethic and passion they bring to the game. And both of them genuinely seem like they want to be here. We need tp find ways of accumlating talent without giving out talent. Isnt that why we worked so hard to get rid of bad contracts? So that money could be our asset?

You know, a comma or two here and there would certainly improve your posts. Honest.

In any case, as much as i dislike (greatly) mr. oscar aka manu ginobili, vásquez isn't in the same class..nor will he ever be. If we manage to acquire burke i'd be all for greivis coming from the bench to spell him, or maybe working with rivers, idk. Still, no way he's close to a "ginobili" role.

Lol yea I know but im texting on a phone where the comma is extremely hard to get to.

I think he would be great in a Manu type of role. Vasquez is made to come off the bench create plays and could be a very good scorer if wasn't asked to man the PG all game. He has a very good 3pt shot and good driving game to be very efficient off the bench. Hopefully we can keep him at a good price if not find a good taker for another player. He's no Ginobli but like the comparison and think he could be close and play the same role who knows he could get better and better like he already has been improving.
