"The pelican is fearsome. Take a raven, for example: it's omnivorous. It eats bugs, and seeds, and fruit, and carrion. Compared to the well-rounded citizen that is the raven, the pelican is the serial killer of birds." - Barry Petchesky, Deadspin
Give this 5-10 years and none of it will matter. It's bittersweet but the name just works for Charlotte, never did here. The history and everything will work itself out
I wanted the name to be retired. Oh well. I just gotta look at it as I loved the New Orleans Hornets. So it's perfectly okay for me to root against the Charlotte Hornets. Totally different team, colors, and Hugos. But I could never be happy for Charlotte. They hated us when we acquired the Hornets, and they hated us for the Anthony Davis pick. The good thing is that we are less likely to have to worry about any "Bring Back the Buzz" or "Free Hugo" groups starting here (so I hope).
Stern has been all about overseas market expansion. A team in London could easily become the highest earning team of the 32, but the 7 hour time different between London and Los Angeles would lead to some weirdly scheduled games. Not saying it is going to happen but it's food for discussion.
I would just like to be in the Eastern Conference, and I hope they place 2 teams west of the Mississippi and move the Grizzlies and Pelicans over.
Would a move back to the Eastern Conference give us more 6pm starts?
Some of these 9pm, 9:30pm and 10pm starts are a pure pain in the butt
Congrats Charlotte and remember, be grateful.
[QUOTE=Teal Lantern;1082032]Not a problem. I outgrew the emotional baiting of name-calling around 20 years ago.
Look Teal I'm not trying to down you or nothing, not my style and I'm sorry for the way I came off earlier. It's just that this whole scheme boils down to dollars and more dollars not dollars and cents. I'm more than sure people in Seattle still get upset watching OKC stay in the playoffs year after year and even more so it doesn't help that they just got shot down for their next possible Supersonics.
The thing about it is that it's a win/lose situation when you move any team from one place to another. Unless fans really and truly don't give a crap that you're taking that team away which wasn't the case in Charlotte, there's going to be hurt feelings. I'm just of the mind that if you must move the team, at least give the city the dignity (if that) of leaving behind their brand.
I guess you can say that it's a vicious circle that's awaiting it's completion by putting a team back in Seattle. I brought up expansion because I think Stern wants to go out on a high note and not rob another city out of it's franchise. Even if it's an owners vote, any commissioner in any league has to have some stroke with big market teams. The NFL is a perfect example of that with the likes of Dallas and New England. So if that means expansion by two teams I think that the league will tweak enough things to make it happen.
And like Austin Rivers said on First Take this morning, "Pelicans" has meaning to the city. And like the name or not, winning will change that in due time and I agree. I'd bet $100 that if the Thunder wasn't as successful as they are now, those uniforms would have gotten a makeover at least 1-2 years into their existence in Oklahoma. The sheer unappealing nature of the brand is what initially drew many to the assumption that they were just placeholder uniforms because the team relocated so quickly.
Hell, the Thunder uni is still lame. Something you could make on Create-A-Team.
Again I was hoping the name would grow on me it hasn't just as awful as the day it was suggested. I can love the team and my city and hate the name. Hopefully when Benson is no longer the in charge we'll revisit this terrible name.
This feels like a cheap cash grab and people have such a group think mentality they'll buy anything sold to them.
Gotta say on the saints' page on facebuk, when it came out the hornets would be renamed pelicans i've read nothing but "****" and "********* ****" and also "******* ****". I mean, you got the idea.
That's okay though because a lot of Saints fans never liked the Hornets either. And I'm not just talking about the name. Heck, a lot of non Saints, non-NOLA people don't even like the Hornets. If they're winning, sure, then people wanna act like they've liked them all along but if they're not winning, they couldn't care less about this team or it's name.
Sorry you aren't feeling the new name. That kind of stuff is subjective so of course there would be some people who didn't like it. I have to admit I didn't really care for the name when it was announced either, but it has grown on me. And I think they absolutely nailed the logos...IMO they all look fantastic (top 5-10 in the league).
There are many reasons to root for a team: the city they represent, the players, management, and owners, etc. The name is pretty low on the list, in my opinion. As you say, you can love the team and city. Maybe you can just buy gear with the Crescent City Basketball or NOLA logos. I wouldn't hold my breath on another name change. I bet when Tom Benson dies Rita will take over and I think she is on board with the Pelicans name.
The pelican may be the world's best designed killing machine. ~ Deadspin
A lot of those people, idiotically say that "New Orleans is a football town." It's following the crowd, stiff necked, and just plain silly to justify not caring because it ain't a popular opinion.
I just can't conjure up any hate in my heart for teams in California, Oregon, and Texas. It's yet another small thing that has kept the Hornets* down in the dumps in fan support having to compete against teams with fans we never interact with.
Orlando/Charlotte vs New Orleans could be two amazingly heated rivalries. We'd still play a couple times a year but it wouldn't be anything like being in their division or meeting them in the playoffs.
My brother says he sees people on Facebook all the time saying it's growing on them. I've always thought either it will, or it won't. If it doesn't grow on you doesn't mean it will change though because it IS growing on others.
It's done. Not everyone will like it, but it's done.
http://www.nba.com/2013/news/05/20/r...s=iref:nbahpts"Judging from the emails you've sent me, the opinion seems to be very mixed," Jordan said on the team's website. "Some of you have said we should change the name and some of you have said we should not. In fact, a few of you even suggested that we should change the name to something new altogether, and not use Bobcats or Hornets."
Mixed opinions. Not everyone on board with the name change. That's how it goes with things like this. Not everyone will agree with everything.
You can never please everyone.
So just do what YOU think is best because a large portion will agree with you. Another large portion wont, but will eventually accept it. And a large portion won't. The first two are acceptable.
To me, the pelicans name was always secondary to New Orleans. What I mean is if you look at the logo the prominent mark on the logo is New Orleans, not the pelicans. If you look at the other 29 logos I believe all other teams made the team nickname the primary mark on the logo. Clearly the team here is focused more on where the team is rather than the nickname it bears, I think they want the focus to be on the city and the pelican is just a marketing point to expand the target audience to the rest of the state and gulf region since pelicans are common around here
Perfectly willing to trade all "Hornets" history back to Charlotte for a 2014 2nd round pick.
I still feel weird about this. I was an original fan of the Charlotte Hornets during the Glen Rice days and that memory will never fade (Part of me hopes that if we have a 2nd round pick, the Pelicans select Glen Rice Jr.), and continued being a fan of this franchise when they went down to New Orleans. I was a fan of everything from that original era from the courts to the team colors to the players and if they go back I'll root for them on a smaller scale like I could never root against them sort of thing but if these two teams were to ever play each other in the NBA Finals, my allegiance will always remain with the NOLA squad.
