Thread: N/P Charlotte starts process to rebrand to Hornets

  1. #51
I absolutely support this move. When a team name has a local reason for being it is idiotic for the name to transfer (hello current locales for Lakers, Jazz, and Grizzlies). Hornets is a cool name for Charlotte. It was an "eh" name for New Orleans.

As for the next expansion, Seattle is a given. After that I think Las Vegas would make sense if the gambling thing doesn't derail them. I believe Las Vegas is the largest American metro area w/o a pro team (over two million people). My #2 choice would be Louisvillle. That is a market of about 1.2 million (similar in size to NOLA), is in basketball country and there are no other pro sports teams in the entire state. Virginia Beach or Richmond might be an okay choice...I tend to think of Virginia as supporting DC teams, but it would be cool for the state to have its own team in a sport. KC initially seems like it would be an okay choice, but that market is roughly the same size as Vegas and already supports the Royals and Chiefs.

The B**cats have officially called for a press conference early tomorrow evening to make a "major announcement." It has come to fruition. You get your pelicans and we get our Hornets back. A win for everybody involved I think.

It makes me sad, but happy for you guys. Tough to say goodbye to a franchise that I've loved so much. Enjoy your team again.

Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan is changing his team's name to the Hornets, said a person familiar with the situation.

The person said Jordan will detail the timetable for the change to be completed at a press conference the Bobcats have scheduled for Tuesday. The person spoke to The Associated Press Monday on condition of anonymity because the name change has not been publicly announced.

NBA deputy commissioner and COO Adam Silver previously said it would take "about 18 months" for the Bobcats to change their name. That means Charlotte could once again become the Hornets by the 2014-15 season.

what are the chances the 2014-15 season opener for both teams will be New Orleans Pelicans @ Charlotte Hornets? got to be written in stone already right?
"The pelican is fearsome. Take a raven, for example: it's omnivorous. It eats bugs, and seeds, and fruit, and carrion. Compared to the well-rounded citizen that is the raven, the pelican is the serial killer of birds." - Barry Petchesky, Deadspin

Hated for life material. I hope the posers finish in last place in their division for the next century.
Old fan. Tired fan. I want to believe.

For what? The name did start in Charlotte. No ill will from me. They can have the cr@ppy colors and the bug mascot. I hope your thread gets dumped.

I'm actually more intrigued by their uniforms & logo than by ours. I hope that the designers are up to the challenge.

Let them have it. Hopefully with a good draft pick, they will have a good product on the court along with their rebrand.

I would think Jordan would play off the old Charlotte Hornets unis... unless he wants to make it look like a Duke/UNC thing

edit: and I'd love a honeycomb lane again... even though yes I know Hornts live in nests and don't make honeycombs

technically ours... but yes it will be a cluster for our 2 fanbases

since the Charlotte Hornets are back do we take down the Bobby Phills jersey hanging up in the NO Arena rafters?

wait... Phills had some kind of LA connection didn't he? like he went to Southern?

  14. #64
You know how many times I have had to explain that Phills jersey to people. Maybe Jordan will take that too since it happened in Charlotte.

Bobby Ray Phills II (December 20, 1969 – January 12, 2000) was an American professional basketball player for the National Basketball Association's Cleveland Cavaliers and Charlotte Hornets.

A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Phills attended Baton Rouge's Southern University. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

Phills was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1991 NBA Draft (45th overall), but was cut in December 1991 without playing a game for them. He signed with the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the Continental Basketball Association where he averaged 23.1 points before rejoining the NBA with the Cavaliers late in the 1991–92 season. Over his nine-year career, he averaged 11 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game.

On January 12, 2000, while a member of the Charlotte Hornets, Phills was killed in an automobile accident in Charlotte, North Carolina. Phills was traveling behind teammate David Wesley at over 75 mph (121 km/h) when his Porsche spun and crossed into oncoming traffic. It hit another car, which in turn was struck in the rear by a minivan.[1] The drivers of the other two vehicles recovered, while Phills was pronounced dead at the scene.[1] A police report said Phills and Wesley were driving "in an erratic, reckless, careless, in a negligent or aggressive manner."[2] Wesley later was convicted of reckless driving after being cleared of a racing charge.[1] Phills is survived by his parents, his wife Kendall, and three children.

This reminds me of the Baltimore/Indianapolis fight over the Unitas statue. They both have one. Lmao

I don't want to come off sounding like a jerk but are people really that stupid in this day and age to not be able to follow a transfer of name brand back to it's origin? I mean seriously with all of the technology at hand, media, etc. is it really that hard?

I love how Austin handled that. These buffoons at ESPN will do anything to take a shot at the Pelicans name. You're a damn sports network. If you don't like it then fine, but don't go about it in a childish way by making fun of it. The people of New Orleans are embracing the name, so if you're making fun of the name, you're making fun of a whole city.

Pelicans are pretty fierce though. You don't wanna **** with them if you go 1 on 1 with one, they'll get you bad. People need to get over it. What's the point of having the Lakers on the Pacific Coast? What's so great about a Clipper? The Thunder is a D-League name. There's no Jazz in Utah. Is it just because it's our franchise that they feel obligated to take shots at it? Like seriously, enough is enough. So tired of this media backlash.

Then if it's that serious for you I suggest you accept the (troll) tag that you're inevitably going to be stuck with on this board while rooting for "your" Hornets either here in New Orleans or in Charlotte. I just don't understand people like you, seriously!

Everybody not up to date on these things and casual fans may not even know NO has changed their name.

This is kind of like what's happened in the NHL. The Winnipeg Jets moved to Phoenix back in 96 becoming the Coyotes. But 2 years ago, the Atlanta Thrashers moved back to Winnipeg to become the Jets. The current Jets have Atlanta's history whereas Phoenix still has the old Jets' history. I don't think you can change stuff like that. Can't re-write history.
