N/P Charlotte starts process to rebrand to Hornets

    http://www.cbssports.com/nba/blog/ey...ack-to-hornets

The Charlotte Bobcats are in the process of changing their name back to "Hornets," a source with knowledge of the situation told CBSSports.com's Will Brinson, including arranging digital assets that would allow a return to their original nickname.

There is no timetable for the switch though NBA commissioner to be Adam Silver told Bobcats season ticket holders in April that such a change would take at least 18 months to implement. Moreover, the change is not unexpected and would likely be popular with the North Carolina fan base.

Silver told season ticket holders re-acquiring the name "Hornets" would not be an issue, stating that the NBA and not the Pelicans owned the moniker. Acquiring and rearranging the necessary digital assets would be a major part of any change. Hornets.com and CharlotteHornets.com are owned by NBA Media Ventures, LLC and currently redirect to NBA.com/Pelicans.
"The pelican is fearsome. Take a raven, for example: it's omnivorous. It eats bugs, and seeds, and fruit, and carrion. Compared to the well-rounded citizen that is the raven, the pelican is the serial killer of birds." - Barry Petchesky, Deadspin

Mass, unwarranted confusion is on the way. I cannot begin to explain how much I am against this. This is absurd, I'm sorry Charlotte guys on here, please don't get really defensive, as I mean no offense.

Do what they wanna. It's not our name anymore.

And I look forward to seeing us take a can of Raid to them when we clash the season after this upcoming one.

What's hilarious, is that, that great owner, just spent MILLIONS "rebranding" (overhauling) their original brand, the Bobcats.

how self-absorbed was the 'Cats original owner to name the team "Bobcats" just so he could have his name in the team name?

This is awesome wasn't much of a bobcat fan but now their my second favorite team except when they play the pels. I really hope Seattle gets an expansion soon I grew up in the 90s and would love to see the sonics and hornets back in action

I'm more excited about those fans getting their name back than I am with being the Pelicans.

Whyu say that? Jordan has already said he'd def be all for it. Nba is ok with it and the fans were polled and want it. Don't see anyone or anything holding this up. Just curious what u see being a problem in this.

Why would u be against this?? We are the pelicans now. Charlotte has much more history with the hornets than new Orleans does. It absolutely makes sense in every aspect.

It's the NBA's decision. A ton of rebrand, especially confusing ones, is not in the best interest of the NBA.

But Ron Silver and David Stern said that they were ok with it and it was up to Charlotte/Jordan which is why the apparent green light came in right before the draft.

Of course it should go back. In fact, NBA should have a standing policy that franchise names stay with the city of origin. If they did we'd be gearing up to root for the New Orleans Jazz next season, the best franchise name in sports history...

I agree. It's just unfortunate that cities such as ourselves, Minneapolis, etc. didn't have the luxury of what the NBA is today and the media that surrounds it in order to keep that from possibly happening. I mean like it or not, the people in Seattle were the last to get shafted by the league but at least they could have become the Supersonics again had they gotten the Kings.

Shinn wasn't going to let go of the Hornets even though Ray Wooldridge pushed him to do so once moving here. I can feel that as well seeing that it's (was) his brand/baby. Clay Bennett had no such allegiance to Seattle to keep or leave the Supersonics and although he took their team, he at least left them their brand option.

I would imagine that Vancouver fans felt slighted by the Grizzlies leaving although you don't hear much of an uproar from either them or the NBA to ever put a team back there. Now with Seattle being passed up by league owners, some rumors are surfacing that the league may expand by 2 teams thus likely putting a franchise back in their city.

The question is where else would you put another team? Virginia Beach? Las Vegas? Who knows!
