NBA N/P Dirk plans to take huge pay cut for Mavs. Hmmmmmm

Dirk Nowitzki's intention to take a "significant pay cut" next summer will be part of the Mavericks' sales pitch in July as they attempt to sign a superstar in free agency.

If the Mavs are able to meet with Chris Paul and/or Dwight Howard, Nowitzki plans to promise them that he'll be extremely flexible in his next negotiations with owner Mark Cuban, ensuring that Dallas will have ample space under the salary cap to acquire more talent in the summer of 2014.

    Making room for Chris Paul?

It's going to be a tough pitch as Paul likes the Mavericks as much as he likes the Celtics.

Unfortunately, he can't take the pay cut now. Contract can't be adjusted till it is over. And signing CP or Dwight is going to take a lot of current capspace. By the time Dirk is willing to cut, he is going to be very old and I am not sure it is worth it for CP or Dwight to go to Dallas for that.

He's probably talking about his next contract which will most likely be his final one.

Unless CP and/or Dwight are going to a major cut the first year of their deal, I don't see them coming to Dallas

You never know with Cuban. If he got Dirk to take a cut in future, something is up. I've read CP's tweets a couple of times. Sounds like he is a pretty big Dallas Cowboys fan and he probably would rather be coached by Rick instead of Vinny.

Dirk Nowitzki said Thursday that he's excited for July 1, the day teams can officially start talking with free agents.

Nowitzki's first two targets will be superstars Dwight Howard and Chris Paul.

While spending some time on 103.3's Fitzsimmons & Durrett show [KESN-FM], the Dallas Mavericks forward discussed the importance of landing one of those two players.

"If we don't get the two monsters then we got to find another way," Nowitzki said, "through sign-and-trades or other free agents that are out there."

Nowitzki also made it clear that signing several players to one-year deals, like the Mavericks did last offseason, would not get it done. The 15-year veteran is looking to return to the postseason and adding a star point guard like Paul or a dominant post presence like Howard is probably the best way to get that done.

Last offseason's big free agent prize Deron Williams passed on playing in Dallas because its owner was absent from his meeting with the team on July 1.

Where was Mark Cuban on July 1 last year?

He was in California on a panel of potential investors considering offers from aspiring entrepreneurs for ABC's hit reality television series "Shark Tank."

This season however, Mark Cuban is making sure that this year's priority free agents in Dwight Howard and Chris Paul can't use his absence as an excuse to not play for the Mavericks.

"I will be chasing free agents and not at 'Shark Tank' on July 1. So I'll get that out of the way. I've been grinding. I keep that trophy … to remind me every morning what the goal is," Cuban told KRLD-FM. "There's no other focus right now. I've got, I don't know, 70 businesses; they all know right now it's all about basketball."

Clearly Mark Cuban is on a warpath.
