I have no doubt Benson wouldn't mind us going over the cap to win titles, and adding Howard and Paul to this roster, as already constructed, would be a contender.
You yourself already said we're 3 pieces away from being a playoff team. If two of those pieces were the best in the damn league, we'd be in very good condition.
However, I just see them both joining up with Harden as it offers even more incentives. If they both leave LA to begin with anyway.
I'm not sure why people see CP3 and Dwight joined at the hip here. CP3 is all about winning, and as Dwight proved this year and subsequent ejection in game 4; he's more about brand than rings. Sure, in theory, it seems like the perfect marriage of talent and skills; but in actual practice, it will be the same mess that would have already effectively driven CP3 out of L.A. in the first place: Immaturity by his running mate except sub Blake Griffin for Dwight Howard. Now am I saying that Blake is on the same stratosphere as Dwight in terms of what they bring to the court? No, however this would be the same diagnosis in another city with higher expectations.
"I don't know if people know — I dislocated my pinkie finger. And [Tyreke] told me, 'You wanna go home or you wanna be here?' I want to be here. And he said, 'All right, then go tape it up and let's play. Let's go. We not stoppin' at no stores. Straight gas. That's what we do, just keep going.'"

People want us to be the next Miami Heat where in one offseason we'll suddenly gamble everything and go for it all! YEAH!
we would pay luxury if it meant getting paul and howard. doesn't seem likely because paul's been there done that, and dwight is too much of a prima donna
If Chris Paul goes anywhere it will be the LAKERS.
Another way to look at this is to put yourself in CP3's shoes if it comes down to the Lakers and the Pelicans which one would you choose? Be honest!

Well, Lakers' immediate future doesn't look very bright right now you know.
If we really have a chance to get both CP3 & D12 I think these are the moves that could take place.
1) Decline options on Lopez
2) Trade Eric Gordon to Atlanta for John Jenkins & 17th pick
3) Trade GV for a 2nd pick.
4) Draft Shabazz & Jeff Whithey
Team
CP3/ Brian Roberts
Austin Rivers/ John Jenkins
Shabazz / Darius Miller
Anthony Davis/ Ryan Anderson
DH12/ Jason Smith / Jeff Whithey
This team would cost about 57 mil

What makes y'all think Dwight wants to come here? Really?
That'd just be just switching uniforms. The media coverage, my house, the arena. It's all the same or thereabouts.
Every difference is in perception and history.
Anything is possible but if they want to play together and compete for a championship, they may have to compromise. I think Houston has more trade pieces to be able to make this move and them keep their money. ATL won't have much of a team around them and If they were to come here and we didn't have to give up draft picks, we would have a good mix of youth and veterans. Still a huge long shot.
They are not coming here! The closest they may get is Dallas. If you like dreaming I'll play along. Lets bring Deron Williams in too.
I hate to reference reddit for information... but this is a pretty thorough explanation of why CP3 to the Lakers is almost impossible.

to clear the need cap space we only need to move EG and take back nothing something like a 2nd round pick or some on on a rookie deal. So if Gordon is trade to a team like Bucks, Bobcats or Hawks it would be to clear more cap space to sign both CP3 & D12
I may be wrong, but the only significant contracts they could amnesty are Kobe's 30 mil (not gonna happen) or Metta's 7 mil (and they'd still have a long way to go to get under the luxury tax), so that doesn't play much of a part here. Kupchack has his work cut out for him.
And yea I'd be more worried about Dallas (or Atlanta) than the Lakers landing CP3
