You can't trade Derrick Williams straight up for, say, Kawhi Leonard now, can you? Even though Derrick Williams was 2nd pick in the 2011 draft, Kawhi was 15th. On draft night, I'm pretty sure trading 15th for 2nd would be great. right? 2 years later, with both draftees now with 2 years of NBA experience, you can't say the same.
Not basing anything off of where he was picked. However using where he was picked to show you he has potential among NBA FO people. The fact that this draft is so widely recognized as one of the weakest drafts in not so recent memory does play into this.

Teams will gamble on talent and potential. Michael Beasley is still on a roster, the Wolves gambled on Brandon Roy, and Greg Oden will have suitors this offseason. Like you pointed out there's always players like Leonard, K. Thompson, J. Butler later in the rounds that out perform the guys taken in the top of the draft.

Same with using Derrick Williams "draft position" and where it holds in the draft of 2013.
I based the trade on Williams potential not his previous draft position. I think Derrick has far more potential to be a star in the NBA than Porter which is the only position Cleveland will be interested in that high. When you add solid relatively young pieces Vasquez and Smith it's a much better decision for Cleveland IMO.

And no, I don't think Williams "fits" a need for the Cavs. Again, I'll bet that if CLE traded out of the #3 pick to drop SIX spots, they'll get more than 2 role players and a damaged former #2 pick.
Once again I disagree. Williams has wing player type skills in a PF body much like Josh Smith. He'll give the Cavs the option of going small with Thompson as the 5 and he at the 4 at times. He has 3pt floor spacing range which will help Irving penetrate. His long wing span will allow him to bother smaller quicker 3's while being able to bang with larger SF's. He has the athleticism to get out on fast breaks and finish. And he'll only be 22 next year. I get he hasn't set the world on fire, but considering the Cavs were weighting between he and Irving in 2011 you know they are familiar with his game.

Could the Cavs FO view Williams like you do maybe, but they could just as easily see what I see and not like this draft class and pull the trigger. They'll get a really good talented guy while getting much needed depth. While still being in position to make a quality selection in the very same draft.

I found interesting comments about Williams

Adelman remains hopeful that Williams will be able to play more small forward as his career progresses. That would allow Love and Williams to play more together, as would playing Love at center.

“That’s something we’re still going to look at,” Adelman said, referring to Williams’ possible future at small forward. “I think he can play there, but it’s about understanding what you have to do at each position. If he’s playing small forward, he has to be aggressive and go to the basket and post up

This is for anybody who thinks MIN isn't interested in trading Ridnour.

As for Ridnour and Barea, if Berger's source is to be believed and if they are indeed shipped out it will be purely to free up cap space, ending the Wolves' hopes for continuing to compete this year. Ridnour is on contract through next season, while Barea is owed more than $4.5 million a year until 2015.

Oddly enough there's a video about Kyrie Irving in that link

In it the guy describes what the Cavs need to help continue to build around Irving. He calls for better spot up shooters to space the floor. Which is exactly what Smith and Williams could add. Porter gives you range out to 19-20 feet while Williams gives you range out to 23-24 feet and Jason Smith is among the better mid range shooting big men in the league. Porter OK athleticism and weak frame will limit his ability to finish in transition which is one of the many strengths of Irving. Williams size and athleticism will give Kyrie a dominate alley oop option on breaks. The guy also failed to mention Irving troubles with durability this is where Vasquez comes in.

The Cavs hired Brown who besides Tom Thibodeau is the best defensive coach in the league. His strength is getting the most out of his players defensively. And with a likely top 10 pick a guy like Shabazz Muhammad, Dario Saric, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope could be available for the Cavs to add depth.

This trade will give the Cavs a roster of

    Irving/Vasquez
    Waiters
    Williams/Miles
    Thompson/Smith
    Varejao/Zellers

    MIN lineup

    Rubio/Barea
    Gordon/Shved
    Gee/Gelabale
    Love/Cunningham
    Lopez/Stiemsma
