You don't gain weight during the season, you do it in the offseason

Yeah, I could launch into the slightly boring science behind it. (Use my former personal trainer background, college hoops and sports-science degree) But that'd just bore most of you. Simply put as said here already heaps, it is nigh on impossible to put on weight mid-season.
Simply put, you need to have a daily caloric surplus (eat more than you burn), which in a life of an NBA player is nigh on impossible. Fitness is one of the things trained hardest in the NBA, even strength and conditioning are done in a way to boost a players cardio-respiratory system. During a season, non-functional more body building style moves simply don't get into an NBA players workouts (no where near enough time, and takes away from more relevant training styles). There are 3 human energy systems, 1 for gaining muscle. Essentially basketball utilises the other 2 far more often (super-simplified)
So combine all the facts:
A game is played roughly every 2/3 days usually. That not only entails the game, but morning practices and shootarounds. (energy burnt)
Days between games are spent on training floors, working out game sequences and developing basketball skills (more energy burnt)
Any other time involves travel (which actually burns alot more energy than one would think)
Late nights also don't give the body ample time to replenish torn muscle fibers.
There is no amount of whole-meal pasta that can help and NBA player put on significant mass mid-season. Quite frankly if he has only added 5lbs, that is a great achievement. In most professional sports, players start the season significantly heavier than they end it. If AD can put on even a small amount of weight during the season, that is massively encouraging for what he can do in an offseason, Ladies and Gents you will see a different body on that man come opening night next year
He certainly has the frame for it. His shoulders are very wide - they look wider than Howard, Duncan, and Garnett at the same age. This is a very encouraging sign when it comes to adding strength and mass.
If he does not gain a lot he might always be a PF and not a C.
