Thread: Davis hasn't gained (significant) weight since being drafted

Because his metabolism is so high, he needs A LOT of calories. Body builders consume around 8,000 calories per day. A buddy of mine gained 30 lbs over 1 summer eating 8,000 calories per day, with out the use of HGH or steroids. True story. Davis can put on 15-20 lbs this summer, but he can't do it during the season.

Almost always, when you add muscle, you add a little fat, but what little fat he puts on this off season trying to gain weight, he'll cut in 2-3 weeks during training camp/pre-season.
Nice info slim. Now that I'm done "gaining", I should start cutting. HAHAHA

But seriously, Slim's info is really helpful. Hopefully, the cutting part is part of the Hornets process, not just the "gaining" part

No prob man. I used to be way into it, but it's a tough lifestyle, and it's really difficult to keep your gains. If you watch football players a lot of times, they'll brag about how they put on 10-15 lbs this summer, but they lose half of it after training camp (at least). That's why guys have a weight they come into the season at, and then they have their "playing weight."

Assuming Davis puts on 20 lbs this off season, he'll lose 10 of it once the season is underway. It's just the nature of the game. That said, I don't want him to gain too quickly. I think 240 would be a great weight for him, and he can get there comfortably by 2015 no problem.

I don't care if he bulks up at all as long as he gets stronger, which he will with age. Part of his game is being sneaky and slippery which bulking up would hurt.

Muscle is gained during the summer when you can get into the gym and lift weights everyday. Not during the season.

    Never said it is ?

"I don't know if people know — I dislocated my pinkie finger. And [Tyreke] told me, 'You wanna go home or you wanna be here?' I want to be here. And he said, 'All right, then go tape it up and let's play. Let's go. We not stoppin' at no stores. Straight gas. That's what we do, just keep going.'"

Davis doesn't have the down time to train properly and rest/repair. His metabolism is through the roof right now trying to take on an 82 game season for the 1st time. Once things slow down, and he isn't playing a game every other day, he'll put on muscle no problem.

People don't realize that there are 2 phases: gaining and cutting. You can't do both. Right now, Davis' body is in cutting mode, but this off season, he'll be able to go into gaining mode. He'll also be eating a lot more, which is really the only way go gain mass.
    Good point and good post

Davis hasn't gained (significant) weight since being drafted

He isn't skinny because he doesn't eat enough. He's skinny because he's just a kid and he's had a recent growth spurt.

They can play with his diet all they want. He will naturally gain weight over the course of the next 3-5 years before he probably reaches a stable playing weight. Anyone who thought he was going to put on 35# of muscle this season and offseason were kidding themselves.

By the time he's 24 he'll be in the 250-260 range. That just nature taking its course. Push it any faster and he's going to end up injured.

Yeah people keep talking about weight gain like it's a matter of fact type of deal. He may not be able to gain significant weight at 24-25. It's a mix bag no two people are the same. Honestly I'm not sure how much the organization should rush the weight gain. Tacking on too much too soon could adversely impact his athleticism.

I don't think 7 pounds an off season for this and next year is too much. That brings him to around 240 which is ideal, in my opinion. I agree, I don't want Dwight Howard 2.0. I want an athletic big man that can compete in the changing NBA Scene.

No it's not, but my point is you can't "set your watch to it" so to speak. He may not be able to retain weight the majority of his career who knows? The focus should be getting him stronger which is far more controllable than weight gain. Which I'm 100% sure they're doing with Davis in conjunction with the weight gain regiment.

    Is muscle not mass?

Not necessarily. You can have people be lean and strong. Swimmer for example have a lot of strength with little mass. It's why Tim Duncan has been strong but not really bulky. Kevin Garnett is another player that's slender but strong. I believe Wilt Chamberlin was of the slender but freakishly strong mold also.

Let's put it this way. You know the Mr. Olympia bodybuilder dudes? With the super big muscles and all that? Notice how actual Olympic weight lifters NEVER look like that. Big, fluffy muscles? Not condusive to generating power. What you want AD to have is the dense, tension wire muscles that let AD stay quick and strong enough to finish through contact.

AND, I hope he gets this, he needs to build up his lower body as much if not more so than his upper body. You don't back people down with your biceps afterall.
