Thread: Who should become the first person to be drafted to the pelicans?

  1. #201
It would be hard to predict Zeller or Len to displace any of our bigs ( Lopez, AD, Smith, Anderson) within the 1st 2 years and their bulkiness is less than both Lopez, Smith and long term < AD. So, the two PGs mentioned, Smart or Burke would be most likely, unless we want to add a bulky big , but I think that will be our FA. It may be too far down but I'd also consider adding McCollum ( very efficient 21 yr old, 4yr SR) or Porter.
We had quite a few interesting conversations as we pondered and navigated the nightly canopy.

This isn't the deepest draft overall but there are some serious PG's in this draft. Here are a few that are projected to still be around in the 2nd round. Draft one of these guys and let them develop under GV for a season and hand it over. Rivers isn't PG. People are going to have to get over that.

Nate Wolters 6'4 190 PG Sr South Dakota State
Lorenzo Brown 6'4 180 PG Jr North Carolina State
Isaiah Canaan 6'0 175 PG Sr Murray State
Myck Kabongo 6'1 180 PG So Texas
Ray McCallum 6'2 190 PG Jr Detroit

  3. #203
I will take Paul Pierce on this team. They say McLemour is Ray Allen.
If you Jimmer it, they will come.

Rivers look much better running the point than he does playing the two, so where is this coming from? Is it based of something you've actually seen while watching him play or are you just spewin nonsense to start a debate?

What about Peyton Siva, why isn't he on any draft boards?

Could be his impatience with Rivers' inability to stay consistent

Even though, it's been stated ad nauseum that Rivers is still developing at PG.

This is based on what I've seen and what I believe he is best at. I don't think Rivers will ever be better than Vasquez at the Point but I do think he could become a very good scoring threat off the bench. Rivers is a scorer. He sees the basket and that's it. I think that's fine as long as he is not the PG.

Big fan of Victor Oladipo. He has MJ athleticism, and he reminds me a lot of Iggy, but he can shoot better. Guy is a great off-the-ball shooter, and his biggest knock is that he can't create his own shot, but that isn't a biggy in our offense where Gordon, Vasquez, and Rivers dominate the ball. Love his defensive tenacity, and he is the best offensive rebounding SF in the draft. Good video yall should watch:

I don't see many differencies from aminu. He's shot 50% from 3, but on 37 attempts. 30% of his offense is on transition, has horrifying ball-handling, turnover prone. He's a good defender, has athleticism and hoops. And for a SF, 6'5 is definitely short.

This guy screams Derrick Williams to me. That's not a bad thing, Williams was the #2 pick for a reason, but if you miscast him as a SF, he'll struggle badly. At the 4, he can take guys off the dribble, use his athleticism to finish around the rim, make guys chase him around the perimeter. He'd be a sieve defensively at the 3 because he doesn't have the lateral speed movement or frankly the interest to guard the perimeter. If we needed a 4, I'd love this guy, but he strikes me as a square peg, round hole.

This seems like the year you want one of 2 things.
    1) a top 4 draft pick
    Or
    2) multiple 1st rounders.

I wouldn't take Victor earlier than 10, but if we had multiple firsts I would take him and Burk and address our sf needs via free agency.

  12. #212
Oladipo is a stronger aminu. Same turnover/ballhandling problems. Same out of control style.

Oladip does have a better shot. If we some how gather up another first round pick in the 18-25 area, he may be worth a pick depending on who we draft with the #5 pick.

I agree 100%. For some reason, I don't think Demps and Monty are looking to add more rookies...

Myck Kabongo. Is he supposed to be any good? He is short (i heard he was 5'10) so what does he bring to the table.

Yes, he is 6'5, but he is the most athletic guy in the draft, which helps him make up for it, and he also has a monster 6'11 wingspan, which helps him make up for it. His ball handling is only horrifying when he is trying to iso guys up. When he is running the break or cutting to the rim, his handle is actually pretty good. He is only TO prone because of his attempts to iso, but when he cuts down on that (you know Monty will put him in a "box"), then he should be fine. Comparing him to Aminu is ridiculous, at best.

What he is better than Aminu at:

    1) Finishing at the rim - 69% in the half court.
    2) Efficiency - 68% in the NCAA, good enough for 1st place.
    3) Better defender - Oladipo is the best defender in the NCAA, and he actually has a feel for the game, unlike Aminu.
    4) Creates TOs - 3.5 steals per 40 min. which is good enough for 1st place in the NCAA.
    5) Way better shooter, which stems from his good shooting form - Over 50 % from 3, and I don't care if it's 37 attempts or not, that is a decent enough sample size. He also shoots 60% off the dribble.
    6) Better off the ball - 50% in catch and shoot situations.
    7) Work Ethic - Coaches rave about him, but you can see how hard he works defensively, and the time he put in the gym over the off season is paying off in his shooting %.
    8) Overall basketball I.Q. - he doesn't look lost on the court like Aminu does. Simple as that.

Side note - He is the #1 offensive rebounding SF in the NCAA with 4 offensive boards per game.

Wow, nola... this is a heck of a post. You've got me convinced he's worth a pick around 10 or so.
    Wherehappens.

I see your point but i still don't like it. If we end up with jennings+gordon+this guy, heck, i would like it even less. I still think we'd need a scoring sf, i'm not really sure he's what we need. A nice player, and i appreciate your post, but i still don't like it anyway.

Who should become the first person to be drafted to the pelicans?

Can he create his own shot ? I'm not really into a wing who can't create his own shot. Outside of gravy Gordon and rivers we don't have that and that's what I personally would like.

"I don't know if people know — I dislocated my pinkie finger. And [Tyreke] told me, 'You wanna go home or you wanna be here?' I want to be here. And he said, 'All right, then go tape it up and let's play. Let's go. We not stoppin' at no stores. Straight gas. That's what we do, just keep going.'"

And that crossover at 4:10 of that video... yeah Aminu can't do that.

Concerned about the 20% from three his soph. year but I suppose his sample size is big enough this year to show real improvement. Great shooting form.

His sample size is still very small. 39 attempts isn't big enough.

Not as a concrete stat, but to show improvement I think it is. The mechanics are there.

Thanks man. I'd be happy with him int hat 8-12 range. He also has great intangibles, and if you watch that video I posted, he is the most tenacious defender I've seen in a long time. Dude can be a stud defender from day 1 in the NBA, and you know Monty would love that.

The question is can he guard NBA 3's, and the answer, IMO, is certainly yes. With his combination of length, athleticism, strength, and defensive intensity, I think he can be like Iggy, but with more offensive firepower.

I understand your position. I'm of the field of thought that we should get a smaller, more skilled SF. I was a huge advocate of bringing in James Harden to be our 3, but that didn't work out. Oladipo fits my bill as to what I like in a SF.

It's a work in progress. He has a really nice crossover that he doesn't use much. He is great at moving with out the ball though, and he gets a lot of his points in transition, on cuts, and offensive rebounds/putbacks. The thing I love about him is that he can catch it on the go, dribble it twice, and get to the hoop no problem. It's when he is in isolation that things start to get hazy with his ball handling. Like I said, though, I've seen him use a nice crossover to get where he wants to go, and those things can be worked on. The main thing I love about him, though, is his off-ball shooting. 50% in catch-and-shoot situations, over 50% from 3... That's impressive, even if he's only taken 40 attempts this year. You still have to make them.

Yeah man, that's a good catch. That's what I'm talking about above. He has a really nice crossover that he doesn't use much, and I'm not sure why, but it's pretty effective when he does. I think he can work on it, and eventually, he can become a CHOS guy.

Yeah, the sample size is smaller than you'd like, but like I said above, you still have to make them. What gives me the most encouragement his the textbook shooting technique he uses, makes me think it isn't just a fluke. Reports are that he just worked his *** off this past off season on his shot, and that's why you see such a big jump in his numbers. He is supposed to be a VERY hard worker, which I love.

    Appresh the scouting btw

So here's a question. With it being stated that this guy of gets his points in transition, coupled with the fact that we are one of the slowest paced teams; why is this a good fit? Development to the half court game expectations ?
