    If you try and dunk on someone and they meet you at the rim, it should be illegal to call it a foul. It's the closest the NBA has to 1v1 combat and we must respect that.

    Someone did a study a few years back and while I can't remember the numbers precisely, it showed that in games where players picked up 3 first half fouls only about 10% of them ended up actually fouling out in that game. It seems fairly clear to me that this suggests you should leave them in at 3 - the exceptions coming when they're players you already know to be very foul prone.
