Thread: Pelicans Head Coaching Search Thread

I've heard the argument that we should reward Vinson for his loyalty to the team over the past decade but has anyone heard other things about him. For instance has he been able to reach and inspire our core, does he have a connection to players we could bring in etc. I really do not want to have a repeat of the past decade.

I agree, Vanterpool could be a good candidate and is well respected from what I read. However, not sure about his connection with Dame. Dame has spoken up for him in the past, but apparently he was not on Dame's list of coaches he wanted in Portland. Reportedly, it was only Billups or Kidd.

Apparently not. It's the hill I've chosen to stand on and not for anything other than she has 7 years under her belt as an assistant coach, has won a Summer League championship and seems to have the Spurs player's respect and attention. And she might help sell an extra few tickets to that Tuesday night showdown against Sacremento in December. But I guess that doesn't matter very much. To the Pels defense though, she might be waiting for Pop to retire and is just going through the motions or just be bad s.. crazy during the interviews using markers and flip charts.

    But what do I know?

I've read that the Spurs did not speak highly of her to the Portland and that's why her candidacy was dismissed.

Pop speaks very highly of her. That sounds like a weak attempt by the Blazers to excuse almost hiring a woman then hiring Billups. Gender should be irrelevant in that you should just get the best person for the job, and if they felt that was Billups just stand by that call. How reliable has Fischer and his sources been ?

Someone on twitter brought up right before we announced the Griffin hire Perry withdrawing his name. So maybe there's some similarities, or we're just looking too much into it other than Vaughn didn't want to coach the Wizards or Pelicans lol

Lee or Vinson? Been a while since we've heard anything from Vinson but I'm vying for him. Either one though and I'm fine.

I'm not upset on missing out on Kidd, Billups, or etc so far, but still... How you gonna have an internal headstart and still find a way to be last at the dinner table.

When we got playoff teams finding head coaches within days. We had weeks.

I'm glad it's not Vaughn. I can't get past his .288 winning percentage as a head coach. That percentage, competing in the Western Conference, had "catastrophe" written all over a potential hire here in New Orleans.

My only question would be... Does Vinson actually want to be Head coach? Or just around for player development and the staff? I'm starting to think he doesn't want to be a head coach.

I think it's a done deal that it's ex-Bison, Charles Lee. It makes sense that nothing has come out of Airline Drive as the Bucks are still in the Championship hunt.

I sure hope so, if we don’t land a decent coach this year things aren’t looking good. I have to assume we’re gonna sign Lee, no way griffin could drop the ball again 3 years in a row, or maybe he could

I'd prefer Becky - more experience, actually played and excelled at a high level and has had many years under a HOF coach who considers her ready for the next step. Lee has had experience with Giannis and Middleton which should not be overlooked. Bud is no Pops however. Charles also never made a regular season roster in the NBA where Becky played 16 seasons in the WNBA making the playoffs in 13 of them and even played in the Olympics. Basically I think she is the best candidate currently available but teams are shy to pull the trigger because she is a woman. Still if Lee can be given enough support to cover his lack of NBA exp his work with the Bucks Forwards could pay dividends. How much of the Bucks playoff turn around do you think comes from Lee's work with them vs the swapping of Billups and Holiday ?

    My 3 guys...

    Charles Lee
    Jerry Stackhouse
    Wes Unseld

    Maybe Vinson as well...

If we even interviewed Becky, ESPN and every news station would be all over it for the publicity. So i dont think shes a dark horse candidate. but I agree somewhat. I would want her over these other candidates that have been named.

Mosley is a dark horse. Worked with Griff for years, gets along with todays player. Lee still heavy fav though

Wasn't Will Weaver a finalist last year? I don't think he's coaching on Australia anymore.

Also, I am surprised that Kenny Atkinson's name hasn't even come up.

I honestly believe everyone else looking sort of knew who they wanted tho. The exception being Portland and they only had three people on their list once Kidd knew he had the Dallas job. Carlise went to Indiana b/c when he became available they just snapped him up w/ no interview and Boston really only wanted Ime. The only teams still looking are Orlando and the Wizards and their search may go longer b/c well their search needs to go longer.

Our search was only w/ people who interviewed last year, Vaughn and Lee and the added name of Vinson, who I think should get this job. I actually feel he should have been offered the job in the first place w/o all this re-interviewing other people. Vinson knows the players, the organization, the owners. His coaching (system) will prob be a bit more like Alvin Gentry's than Stan's (since he's a shooting specialist) but he can win more games than both and have us in the playoffs for sure. Now you get him the right players then the sky's the limit.
