Stockton didn?t look like he should do what he was able to do on a night to night basis, but he went up against the best players the NBA has ever seen night after night and held his own and then some. There was no one who had the ability like Stockton to see the court like a Chess board and play it like a grand master.

It depends on which grandmaster. Not all chess grandmasters play the same.

Stockton played offense in a very straight-laced and conservative fashion. That's fine, there are elite chess players who play like that. But there are also elite chess players who favour more aggressive, slightly ''riskier'' styles and yet are still grandmasters. You can't just say ''oh well Stockton played like a grandmaster'' because there is no one way to do that: you can do it in any number of styles.

While I don't 100% agree with everything that he says, Ben Taylor (author of the book Thinking Basketball, dude who runs the Thinking Basketball YouTube channel, inventor of ScoreVal, PlayVal, and NBA Passer Rating) has them both as top 40 careers of all time and I think he makes some good points about them both in his profiles on the two, which you can read here if you want:

    Stockton - https://backpicks.com/2018/01/25/bac...john-stockton/
    CP3 - https://backpicks.com/2018/02/19/bac...21-chris-paul/

There's no doubt that Stockton was elite, and when we talk about the top tier of point guards ever we are, to some extent, splitting hairs. I'm not trying to say Stockton was a bad player at all - that is absolutely not the case. I just think that CP3 is better, that's all. In fact I would go as far as to say that CP3 is the best player under 6'3 of all time.

Remind me, how tall was two time NBA Champion and Hall of Famer, Isaiah Thomas?

One game, the absolute peak of their career, I can have any player under 6'3 of all time, i take Iverson

We need to clarify debates because often when people debate who is the better player, one person is talking about peak and another is talking about whole career

Absolute peak - Thomas or Iverson

    Career - Stockton or CP3

I also think it depends on team context.

If I have absolutely no offense weapons whatsoever and I'm just picking one guy to go out there and be the offense, then yeah Iverson gets a look in. If I have a team with some pieces who can do some things but who just need unifying around a central figure, then I still take CP3.

And frankly, the Iverson > CP3 decision in the first instance is a narrow one; CP3 is still all-time at creating his own shot and is a better playmaker and defender than Iverson ever was, even at his peak.

Isaiah Thomas won championships with a bunch of nice players who were hardly 'superstars' in the era of....

...Magic, Jabbar, Worthy and the Lakers
...Bird, Parish, McHale and the Celtics
...MJ, Pippen, Grant and the Bulls
...Stockton, The Mailman, Darrell Griffith and the Jazz

Thomas won an NCAA Champion and two time NBA Champion; CP3?

Don't we already have their 1st in 2022 (as the 2021 will not convey)?

Um, Thomas played with Joe Dumars who is in the Hall of Fame and was voted in as a top 50 NBA player of all time. Mark Aguire who was a 3X NBA all star. Dennis Rodman, also in the Hall of Fame, who though was just starting his career in Detroit was still an NBA first team defensive player during the Pistons' champion seasons. Then they also had an NBA hall of fame head coach.

I'm a huge Isaiah Thomas fan, and was a big Pistons fan in the day, but to say Thomas won his championships with only "nice" players isn't really correct.

The second year the Pistons won the chip (89-90) Dennis Rodman won his first DPOY award and led the league in Offensive REB%

''Nice players who were hardly superstars'' apparently includes the reigning DPOY, a 3x all-star, a 4x all-star, and a guy who was 3rd Team All-NBA that year and First Team All-Defense that year and the year before it.

Would love to have a bunch of non-superstars like that. Jesus Christ.

Also, though this is common sense to anyone who actually thinks about it for more than twenty seconds: a championship is a team accomplishment. Getting uppity about individual player discussions based on team accomplishments is absurd. Nobody thinks Big Shot Bob is a better player all-time than Larry Bird, but he has twice the rings and then one extra!

    My dear blasphemous, overseas friend....

A team featuring Bill Laimbeer, James Edwards, Mark Acquire, John Salley, Dennis Rodman, and Vinnie Johnson in their top eight is a team featuring a lot of nice players. So, Mrs. Williamson, I stand by my post; Isaiah played with a bunch of nice players who are hardly superstars.

Dennis Rodman and Bill Laimbeer are my 3rd and 4th best players, and that's considered a team with a lot of "nice" players? Man, I'd love to have those problems.

Love to be the reigning DPOY and be considered just a ''nice'' player. Love to be All-NBA and All-Defense in the same season (and be an all-star) and be considered just ''nice''.

So, you think he's a superstar? I guess what you call a superstar, most would consider a nice specialist. I wonder how many assists Isaiah 'lost' to your superstar's prolific shooting (a similar claim you have made ad nauseum about your son here in New Orleans).
