    Pelicans Waiving Thornwell...

do you think the Pel's have anything specific in mind already, or just setting themselves up for something in the future?

His contract becomes GTD this week. It's why he was cut.

I think it is just allowing a little more flexibility regarding the tax and any potential transactions. They can sign a player to a 10-day to give them what Thornwell did, thereby allowing them not to guarantee his contract.

Avoids guaranteeing the contract and also frees up a roster space which allows more flexibility in trades. That's pretty much it.

You waive his contract so you don't have to pay him guaranteed money

Then you resign him on a 10 day. You can get two 10 days, and both of those basically take us up until the trade deadline.

At that point, you kept the roster spot free which lets you be more flexible in trades, while still having him with the team on the 10 days the entire time, which means that if there's a free roster spot at the end of any/all trades, you can just resign him again.
