Pelicans Brandon Ingram MUST get better in Clutch minutes // (With Andrew Lopez)

He will, he’s young, and these reps will be what makes him get better in clutch moments. I don’t care if we don’t win a single team as long as our young core learns the game and improves. Aren’t competing for a championship this year, now in 2 years if this is happening we have an issue.

How does that compare to Ingram in the first three quarters? Before the fourth quarter, Ingram is shooting 51.2% overall and 50% (16-of-32) on 3-pointers.

Of his 21 fourth-quarter field goal attempts this season, 19 have been jumpers. Of those 19 jumpers, 18 have been contested according to data collected by Second Spectrum. He's forcing himself into these shots as he tries to be the leader, and slowly but surely, the Pelicans are looking to him as such.

Just a season ago, Ingram shot 46% overall and 41% from deep in the fourth quarter. He averaged 5.8 points in the final 12 minutes, second on the team to only Williamson's 6.5 average (and he played in only 24 games).

    Brandon Ingram Last Season:

    Full Game 4th Quarter Only
    At Rim Frequency 28% 23%
At Rim Points per Shot 1.25 1.25
    Midrange Frequency 37% 42%
Midrange Points per Shot 0.81 0.82
    3Pt Frequency 35% 35%
    3Pt Points per Shot 1.17 1.21

So you can see, last season he was about as effective in terms of points per shot in the 4th quarter as he was throughout the entire game; slightly more efficient from 3 but really about the same, nothing drastic. We saw him attack the rim slightly less often and shoot more midrangers, but the numbers aren't that dramatic. Compare that to this year so far:

    Brandon Ingram This Season:

    Full Game 4th Quarter Only
    At Rim Frequency 14% 10%
At Rim Points per Shot 1.33 1.0
    Midrange Frequency 53% 60%
Midrange Points per Shot 0.99 0.67
    3Pt Frequency 33% 30%
    3Pt Points per shot 1.10 0.00 (he is 0/6)

Obviously you have to regard that with a HUGE amount of healthy scepticism: the 4th quarter shot total sample size is super small at this point in the season, that is absolutely something you need to be aware of. But so far the story it bears out is fairly straightforward. So far this year Ingram's offense contains a much smaller frequency of the most efficient shots (at-rim attempts) in exchange for a significant boost to his midrange shot frequency; the 3pt rate is about the same. In the 4th quarter, this continues at an even more exaggerated rate, and his efficiency across the board has dropped off the face of the planet.

People can debate over whether it matters or not, or whether it's just an unfortunate coincidence of the early season, or whatever, I'm not really interested in debating that right now for a number of reasons. But the reality is that Ingram's production in 4th quarters so far this season has been pretty sub-par, especially compared to last year and his own numbers through the first three quarters.

He was carrying too much of the offensive burden in the 4th.. which had an effect on his stamina, which has an effect on shot selection and efficiency. With SVG recognizing this, and giving Zion more touches Ingram will be a lot better in the 4th.

This is a non issue. And will be proven to be one as Zion takes on more of a significant role.

Yeah, he sure hasn't had a 'Holiday', huh?

I think we all could have 'Jrue' this up!!!! It was bound to occur.
