Pelicans 10th January - New Orleans Pelicans @ New York Knicks - 13-25

After a very strange game featuring a dreadful and depressing first half followed by a very dynamic and fun second half, we defeated the Chicago Bulls at home and moved up to 13 wins on the season. Tonight though, we hit the road again and this time it's to Madison Square Garden, where we will take on the 10-28 New York Knicks.

Before that though, let's check out our injury report:

That's correct: Jrue, Kenrich, Zion, and Darius all remain OUT for this game.

So, what's the deal with the Knicks? They've sucked for years, still sucked this year, but they fired Fizdale and since then they've been slightly less terrible than they were before that. They've gone 3-4 over their 7, and their losses have generally come against good teams: Lakers, Clippers, Utah; these are teams we lose to as well. Meanwhile, they've beaten Portland, Brooklyn, and Washington; these aren't great teams, but dammit, we're not a great team either Since starting the year 4-18 under Fizdale, they've gone 6-10 under Mike Miller. This is an improvement, at least so far. Who knows if the novelty will wear off sooner rather than later?

What are the Knicks? Well, they're 27th in ORtg and 26th in DRtg, if that helps. Their second leading scorer is Julius Randle and he's OUT for this game, for personal reasons, and their leading scorer Marcus Morris is questionable. They're 9th in the NBA in rebounding, but 29th in assists, 19th in steals, and 20th in blocks; they're 23rd in the NBA in FG%, 22nd in 3PT%, and they are the worst FT shooting team in the league, mustering only 68% from the line as a squad.

Well, with no Randle and possibly no Morris, their 3rd leading scorer is rookie RJ Barrett. How has he been this year? Many of us were highly sceptical of him in the draft, but some others really wanted him.

RJ Barrett, so far this year, is averaging 13.8ppg, 5.1rpg, and 2.5apg, on 46% TS. That is about 10% below league average. He's shooting 39% from the field, 30% from 3, and about 58% from the FT line. He has a -21 Net Rating (including a stunningly poor 92 ORtg), a BPM of -4.6, a VORP of -0.8, is averaging negative Win Shares per 48, and has a TOV% higher than his AST%. His PER is 9.9, his PIPM is -3.33 (the 14th worst rating in the NBA, exactly 1 spot better than fellow Duke alumni Cam Reddish), and he's bad at basketball right now.

Of course, young rookie, bad system, sub-optimal teammates, etc, all of those apply, but so far this year most of the reservations people had about him re: bad decision making, poor shooting projections, shaky defense, and suspect finishing have all played out.

So this game should be a cakewalk? Well, as we found out against the Bulls it's not always that easy. But this IS a game we should go into ready to make a statement and clean up. So let's do that. #WBD

Some nice games on the schedule tonight for the Pelicans. A few cross cancellation games.

If we bring the same aggressiveness as that Jazz game and the Bulls second half, we should be in good shape when the final buzzer sounds. Just hope our guys don’t fall asleep at the wheel on this Knicks team. They are a scrappy bunch kind of like the Bulls team and will make the game physical. Mitchell Robinson has also been dealing with a toe issue I heard.

    No Randle tonight

I don’t care if they beat the Knicks by one or 21, I just want the Pels to win. However, my preference would be for the Pelicans to administer a humiliating beat down. I have disliked the Knicks since the 60s. Of course, that could be said of the Warriors, 76ers, Lakers and others back then. I hated pretty much everyone in the NBA that didn’t have Bill Russell playing for them.

    Free Zion

I'll probably break something if they lose to the Knicks without Randle.

I see what’s happening here. Zion won’t play until he can put it between his legs twice. He has to pass the test of mutant

What's crazy is that after tonight, we're only gonna be 39 games into the year. 39 out of 82. Not even quite half way.

It sometimes feels like ''oh well, why bring Zion back now, he'll only play in like 11 games or something, not worth it'', and I think that's part (not entirely) of why some people feel like they shouldn't bring him back at all. Too few games to have an impact, not worth it.

But in reality, there's more than half the year left. More than half the games left to play. If Zion takes the court VS the Jazz, he's still likely to play in 35+ games, despite not playing in back to backs. Jax has currently played 35 games total: is anyone going to say that 35 games isn't enough to see tangible improvement for Jax? Obviously not, his progress has been obvious and significant. Give Zion that same chance.

Zion could, despite not playing until midway through January, still log 1000 minutes (or close to it) this year without even hitting 25 minutes a night. That's a lot of play time.

First 4 /5 shots at the rim. Promising start

Lol at the Knicks seeking out Taj Gibson for scoring early

Not a huge fan of how leisurely we're taking it right now. Knicks are a bad defensive team and they're not particularly pacy either; we should be attacking, instead of waltzing into the half court.

Good start. Turnovers were off the foot and stupid crap like that. Just need to cut out the silly mistakes. We are attacking which is good

Transition could be smoother yeah. Might be trying to conserve energy for the back to back coming up.

Understandable, although there's always the argument that in that case we should try and bury the Knicks as quick as possible so nobody needs to play in the 4th

Like that drive from Lonzo. Got blocked but still, attacking space like that is what you want

Man, Barrett has so little shake on his handle

Fantastic take from Jax, got the FTs going.

Not a fan of how casual everything seems to be right now. Hopefully inserting Jax can inject some life and energy

    NAW IS IN.

    NAW. IS. IN.

Jax erases the Barrett drive but it's put back by Mitchell

    Passing is great tonight

  23. #23
Great find from Hart to get that dunk to Jax. Right in the dunkers spot, no defenders around.

  24. #24
Great pass out from Hayes to Ingram, and I like Ingram passing it up to NAW for the 3 as well. Could have easily taken it (and probably made it too, he was open and he's great at the catch and shoot) but getting NAW some touches early is nice to see.

And Hayes back to the line FTR is great for him. So much rim pressure.
