    Pelicans 4th January - New Orleans Pelicans @ Sacramento Kings - 11-24

After suffering a pretty heavy loss against the Lakers in our last game, we take on the Kings tonight. It's kind of rough doing road back to backs at any time, but especially after taking such a heavy defeat in which our key guys played relatively heavy minutes (Jrue and Ingram both played 35+ minutes, Lonzo and Favors both played 33+). Further than that, the post-game data from NBA Stats shows that Jrue spent 60% of his on-court time guarding either Lebron or AD, and whether or not you think he did a good job, that's a ridiculous burden to place on the shoulders of a 6'4 guard who is also expected to be a key piece offensively.

Tonight, we have a slightly easier challenge in the Kings.

The Kings are 13-22, so their record is a little bit more closely related to ours than LA's was. The Kings have also only won 1 game since December 17th, going, 1-8 over that stretch. So they're not winning much, recently.

The Kings are bottom 10 in rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks per game. They are 19th in FG%, and 22nd in 3pt%. They play at the slowest pace in the NBA, dead last in 30th, so we should be able to take some advantage there as long as we can avoid getting heavily bogged down into half-court play. Kings are 21st in ORtg, and 18th in DRtg, so a touch worse than us offensively and better than us defensively.

The Kings recently got Fox back, which is good on one level because it means they're more fun to watch, but on the other hand it does present us with a challenge. We have the personnel to guard him, of course, with Jrue and Lonzo (who has been playing better recently) but the question of whether the Pelicans defense will show up on any given night is a bit of a crapshoot. Not counting a game where he only scored 2 points before getting injured within 2 minutes, Fox has averaged about 22ppg in his last 5 full games, and given that he's only shooting 31% from 3, it's not because he's hitting bombs.

Fox is shooting 61% from 2pt range over his last 5 games, which obviously includes at-rim attempts, and as a consequence he's also getting to the line around 6 times per game. There's a strong responsibility on our perimeter defense to stymy his drives, and another responsibility on our big men to prevent him from waltzing up to the rim with regularity.

Aside from that, it's Buddy Hield, as it is always Buddy Hield. Buddy is only shooting about 37% from 3 this year, a big drop off from his last few seasons, and frankly that's trending downwards: only 35% since December 1st. Will he get his Danny Green opportunity tonight to break his minor slump, or can we put enough pressure on him to remove one of the Kings' largest threats? Find out next time on Dragon Ball Z.

Try to bounce back from last game, Pels. This is a winnable game with just a bit of elbow grease and a touch of luck. #WBD.

I wish we had taken the opportunity to rest some players last night after the game got out of hand. Hopefully we take this one because we need to keep things close for Zion’s return

Good call. That game was fast paced. Since we're not playing the Lakers, we'll get at least 15 more FTs. So we should be ok. Lol

I'm in Buffalo. Never tried to catch a game out of the area before. It looks like my FoxSportsGO app is letting me watch FSNO, though. So that's good.
    Good positive energy.

    But also, yo mama's fat.

It was a 10 point game for half of the 4th, and only a 7 point game with 2:25 left. Could have gotten it down further if not for "LeScreen" at that point.

As bad as it looked in the 3rd quarter, last night wasn't a blowout.

It's easy to say that, but I don't think anyone was watching that game thinking ''oh yeah, this is winnable''. It was apparent that we were outclassed after the first quarter, and with the way refs were calling things everyone knew that we weren't going to win. Besides, isn't getting down by 20 only to pull it close but fail at the last minute basically the Pelicans Special at this point? We've seen this movie before.

Well yes when it was down to 7 or 9 with 5 minutes left, I said "yeah, this is winnable.", because it was. They got back into it with our classic one man missiles into the paint. Forced AD and Lebron to play damn near 40 minutes last night.

The outclassing part didnt happen until the 3rd. Was a 12 point game at halftime.

We ended the first quarter down 12. We were outclassed early. That lead didn't grow in the second quarter, but as you say yourself, we were also down 12 at half-time; they put us down double digits early and we couldn't climb out of it until right near the end.

AD and Lebron play damn near 40 minutes damn near every night because the Lakers are ridiculously shallow. Davis, for example, has only played less than 35 minutes once in his last 12 games, and Lebron only twice in the same span.

Like I said, us getting heavily, heavily outplayed to the tune of a 20 point deficit only to crawl our way back into single digits before dying at the finish line is the Pelicans Special. We do it at least once a week. We had control in that Lakers game for a grand total of about 8 minutes across all 4 quarters, and most of those minutes had Rondo as the lead ball-handler

    Good defensive read from Ingram

Fox just burns Lonzo in transition

Ball clanks an off the dribble 3 attempt with 15 seconds on the clock: he had not passed the ball a single time in that possession.

Good sequence of dynamic passing there, quick bounce from Ingram and then Redick made the right move to Lonzo, then Lonzo made a nice entry pass. Good stuff.

Fox strips Lonzo, goes coast to coast, Lonzo fouls him. FTs coming.

    Redick with a 30 footer

Nice little oop there. We have been getting out in transition quite a bit lately which is good.

  15. #15
There was not a single pass in the final 15 seconds of that play and it ended with a fadeaway midrange brick from Ingram. Yuck.

    Kings offense is incredibly stagnant

Really nice laydown pass from Ingram to Hayes there

Good offensive rebound by Jax. Ingram is settling for a few too many jumpers here.

I like the idea from Lonzo. Kings hesitated and he drove. It was open. He needs to become a better finisher near the rim though

Yeah, agreed. When he drove a minute ago it collapsed the D and he made a nice pass, but then on the very next possession he clanked a 10 foot fadeaway, got the offensive board passed back to him and clanked the 3. Nobody was near him, could have easily gotten an actual play going.

Lonzo cannot hit easy wide open mid rangers to save his life. Insanely frustrating to watch.

To the people who were asking what was wrong with Moore's shot selection last game:

He just took a contested 10 foot hook shot with 14 seconds on the clock, surrounded by defenders and with two guys open on the 3pt line.

Hield strips Okafor, and they're up 1.
