#Pels Life : Zion Medical update

    Yep he is injured.

    October 17, 2019

NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson is listed as out with right knee soreness for the team’s final preseason game against the Knicks. He did not travel with the team to New York today and remained in New Orleans to undergo further testing and evaluation at Ochsner Sports Medicine.

Further updates will be forthcoming when available.

I can't guarantee this, I'm not with the team or anything, but my personal thoughts on this is that it's a minor/non-existent injury that's just being used as a safe reason to keep Zion out of the game.

Maybe that's just a little bit of hoping, but I don't think it will have been anything too serious.

This sure as hell better be precautionary. He doesn’t need to play this game, but the fact he’s listed in having “soreness” has my head thinking a ton of different things.

Wait till New Yorkers find out he won’t be there.

I hope you are right. I've been worrying that this is all too good to be true and he will get injured for sure.

Honestly, with Aaron Nelson in charge I don't think this is as worrying as it would have been in previous years.

If I'm in charge of the medical processes and I have someone like Zion on my hands, I'm running every test after even minor dings. If there's any issue, I want to be on top of it. The fact that they're monitoring it and evaluating it, even if it's just soreness, is exactly what is expect.

I'm not taking this as a serious concern before we have legitimate reason to.

They did this with him in Summer league and it worked out just fine. He had all that time to recover from that knee soreness. He should be fine on Tuesday or anytime that week.

I don't know. It's the "did not travel with the team" part that worries me. When I say worry, I mean as in 'might miss a game or two'. Not like it's something he'll miss serious time over. It just seems like if it WAS precautionary/to keep him out of the game you would still want your rookie traveling with the team, eh?
    Good positive energy.

    But also, yo mama's fat.

What if Zion turns out more injury prone than AD?

I mean, if he does, I'll have to blame you for cursing it.

I don't see it happening though. Zion hasn't been historically injury prone (his only injury prior to this was the result of his shoe exploding, not his actual body failing), and he's built much better than AD is, in terms of stability and sturdiness. Of course, extra weight always comes with extra risk, but so does excess height, so there's a tradeoff there. Yes, he's a bit heavier than most players, but there are equivalent risks of being lighter and taller.

Then you consider that Zion has pretty good landing mechanics overall, his knee stability is pretty good (not knock kneed on cuts or anything, always in line), he has a strong broad base, etc etc. Those are all things that you hope mitigate any injury risk.

And like I said earlier, even if this is a meniscus issue (which I hope it is not!) that isn't necessarily something that dooms anyone, even guys who rely on speed and athleticism. Westbrook tore his meniscus in 2013, and has still been explosive as hell since, and has played the vast majority of his available games, and it hasn't caused him serious further trouble.
