Thread: True Shooting Percentage

    True Shooting Percentage

In this thread I'll calculate the true shooting percentage on every teams 3 scoring options/top 3 scorers. I hope it gives you some insight for your team. I know it helped mine. It's early and I'll be updating this thread every so often. You can also make requests if you don't know (or are too lazy) to calculate it.

Here's an example of what it will look like.

    76ers
    Jerry Stackhouse .481
    Danny Granger .576
    Kenyon Martin .423

    Bucks
Gilbert Arenas .648 (insane historically in this category)
    Antoine Walker .438
    Shareef AbdurRahim .463

    Bulls (Lebron wasn't a top 3 scorer)
    Jalen Rose .632
    Andrew Bogut .712
    Stephon Marbury .542

After calculating the first 3 teams, I can tell it is way to early to do this but tell me what you think and what you want out of this.

I can tell you right now that from previous calculations in this league.
    .480 is about average
    .500 is pretty solid
.520 is what you want from a number two option
.540 is what you want from a number one option
.560 is elite of high usage players only Kevin Garnett, Gilbert Arenas, and Joe Johnson are in this category

Are you calculating true shooting percentage or effective field goal percentage. True shooting includes free throws.

TS%. I got the formula from Basketball-Reference.com and double checked it on Hoopdata

    Pts/((fga + .44 x fta) x2)

    Your numbers seem really low

    It's actually:

    PTS / 2*(FGA + (.44 * FTA))

You may just have the order of operation wrong.

    So for Jerry Stackhouse:

    He has 7 3s and (57-7) 2s

    So: 21 + 100 = 121 Points
    FGA: 131
    FTA: 14

    TS% = 121 / 2*(131 + (.44 * 14))
    TS% = 121 / 2*(131 + (6.16))
    TS% = 121 /2*(137.16)
    TS% = 121 / 274.32
    TS% = .441090697

Correct me if I'm wrong. I like your numbers better. lol

No I do that. I multiply game by points per game for points you aren't counting made freethrows

AHHH. That's it. I'll add that it.

Yea, Stackhouse went to 48% with that... good looking out!

It brought Prince from TS% of .34 to .456.

For his money, not counting rookie guys, Gilbert Arenas is the best in the league. Good thing waukee has enough Canada in it to keep him off of guns.

I'll also include team true shooting percentage. I'll release the results after the week 3 sim so I have a larger sample size and more telling data.

I can't access the index at work... can you do Tony Allen and TC's TS%? THANKS BROOOOOOOOOOO!!!

    Allen .677
    Tc .486

Allen's numbers show that you have to wait for a larger sample size for these numbers to be useful.

I'll have all the numbers for every team included once you don't get crazy stuff like .712. And don't mention it. I do about half of the numbers anyway. Might as well just post the results.
