Thread: Thunder acquires Tyson Chandler from the Hornets {multi-merged reactions}

Does the Chandler trade really make things more flexible?

    no, it doesn't

and if anybody wants to explain to me how it does, i'm waiting

we are still goin to be above the cap until the end of 2011 (or until we deal peja for expiring deals), and even then we'll be up against the cap and won't be able to sign a max player

we've lost salary to make trades (which limits our flexibility). you need salary to trade for salary in the nba

so please, somebody tell me how this makes things more flexible. if you want to call it shinn not spending money and being cheap? fine. agreed. that's life.

but please explain how this makes things more FLEXIBLE for the hornets

    for the record

the year when we may finally be under the salary cap is the year when chandler's deal would run out anyway, after 2011

so once again...no cap relief. no added flexibility (the opposite, actually)

No doubt. He also said Chandler made him a better player. Hopefully he can develop that chemistry with Wilcox.

It was a crappy trade by a crappy owner. Just like selling a first round draft pick was a crappy decision.

Welcome to New Orleans/Atlanta/Milwaukee/Cleveland (pre Lebron)/L.A. Clippers/any other small market team that is going to basically suck forever because of crappy ownership.

The money problems with the Hornets are not on us, the fans or state, it's on poor Shinn and his own personal monetary problems. He could be in Los Angeles, running the Lakers, and he would still be broke.

    One of the reasons.

In hindsight, he was a luxury this team couldn't afford. They pressed a little too hard to try to bring a title home, and it's biting them now.

But Posey's a good player...take it out on the front office, not on a guy that's playing his butt off for us.

You're smarter than that....well maybe. I'm saying that Presti is willing to take a chance with Chandler. What does he have to lose? The Hornets are a team in a totally different situation. They weren't willing to take that chance. TC's injury issues are a short term and long term nightmare for the Hornets. If he is able to stay healthy and become productive then it's a good deal for Presti. If TC continues down the path I think he will go, Presti will have a trading chip (expiring deal) at a later date. This deal isn't a deal maker or deal breaker for the Blunder. If anything, the Okie coullions will stay interested in their pathetic team because a former Hornet is there. Presti has nothing to lose here. It's not like the Blunder will be making a playoff push anytime soon.

Not really, but don't pout because I didn't tell you sooner. I did make it a point to discuss it with friends though.

Bower and Scott really messed this all up. Bower did not serve this organization well in building a team! He bought into Byron's veteran junk and let no development take place as a result. This team could still have talented young guys in the mix contributing just as much as these overpaid vets do. They just chose to spend on declining talent and as a result put themselves into a corner. This is why you take the punches with young talent on the court, they are your future and they cost less for you. Look at the mix of players on the Spurs and Lakers, Jordan Farmar, Ariza, Vujacic, George Hill (spurs), Udoka (spurs) etc.. The Spurs have 7 players on their roster with 4 years or less, the Lakers 9! The Hornets now have 3 and one is Chris Paul, which was a no brainer can't miss!

With a point guard like Chris Paul this team should have added speed and length through a couple of young players. They should have had an alternate lineup that just blazes down the court with Paul running that unit too for total change of pace. Instead they are loaded with more veteran 3 point specialist and TWO NBA bench specialist in Bowen and Marks.

It's funny. When players hold out, demand trades, etc. it's about business. Now it's personal. Ridiculous. The system benefits the players. They can't have everything their way.

Exactly what I was thinking. But they do get it both ways, more than any other pro league.

While that is true, it's impossible to deny how this trade is being billed across the country.

Was this a smart move by the franchise? Probably, we will only really know for sure in the long run. That said ... the franchise, city, and fans are taking a beating on this one from the national press.

It's easy to say who cares but honestly it matters because in less than 1 season all the positive press from last season has morphed into one universal truth: New Orleans poor support is hurting Shinn's ability to pay players. It's not true but it's now common knowledge.

This franchise is horrible with PR, absolutely horrible.

Good point. Bringing in a Deandre Jordan, who is still young, and has been beasting it up lately (look at his gamelog) would've been a piece to fill in up front, and build for the future. Darrell Arther, taken with our pick, would've been a great deal as well. Mario Chalmers?

Spurs have some great young talent, which shows that just because you want to contend for a championship, doesn't mean you have to go all out and forget about young talent, or developing players. George Hill has been spectacular for the Spurs this year, as has Roger Mason. Bonner is still pretty young, and has contributed as a starter as well. Not to mention they have great European talents like Ian Mahamini (spelling?) and Tiago Splitter waiting overseas. Maybe they bring them in a couple of years later and they turn into a Marc Gasol? Certainly a positive.

As for the Lakers, they have tons of huge pieces. Their entire bench is extremely young. Ariza, Sasha, Jordan are all young, solid contributors off the bench, Bynum, if he can stay healthy, can be a superstar in the league. And all four mentioned are less than 24 years old!

What about the Celtics? Kendrick Perkins, a solid starter in the league, but extremely young. RAJON RONDO??? Leon Powe is a beast off the bench, Tony Allen contributes as well, and they had a great draft too getting JR Giddens and Billy Walker.

It kind of makes me mad to see that even title contenders have better young talent than us. The Spurs built through the draft, maybe we can do the same? We can start by not being cheap and using our 1st round picks next time, or we'll turn into the Phoenix Suns!

  17. #867
Yeah, its something the Hornets can do. Bower has to exert a little machismo or moxy and get some youth in their in the offseason and tell Byron to coach them or hit the road. The Celtics are another great example. We hung in there with them the last game, imagine having that missing young unit to come off the bench in the third and run with them, while DX and Peja rest. Maybe the results are different.

Of course, option 1 goes with the assumption that the front office and management/ownership are dysfunctional. The second way is to read this as something any player not wanting to expound further, but also not show that they were consulted on the idea. If management had even half a brain...strike that...if they just had a brain, they would have talked with CP before doing this, and make sure he understood where they were coming from, and see what he thought. My thinking is he loves TC, but also realized that we needed to make some moves. My gut says he was consulted, but didn't think it was a smart move. With that said, I'm sure they are promising him some major moves, if not this year, next. Either way, if this team goes down hill fast, fan support will follow. Not 2004-2005 fan support (which was non-existent), but it will drop below these past couple of years, and then we will get to hear about all the inducement payments, etc. Personally, I'm ready to see if we can unload Mo Pete, and maybe even Peja to a contender, b/c we are not one, and keeping them around for the next couple of years won't help us any.
You have to believe CP was consulted. There's NO WAY you totally upset the apple cart. He may not have agreed totally, but his comments so far suggests he knows the end game with this situation. Also, I took from the game last night that the Hornets are dealing with this professionally (by playing consistently and getting off to a blazing start) and will move forward.

Yeah I think you can't judge this until after the season. It could turn out to be a very savvy move or an awful one.

    Interesting take on it indeed.

I was a Marcus Vinicius fan and poor Adam Haluska didn't even get a shot. Let's look at the youth we could still have on this team developing on the court and in practice with Paul and the others.

Marcus Vinicius - not in the league, but I like him.
Cedric Simmons - picked too early - not his fault...was probably our most athletic big.
Brandon Bass - look at him now
    Adam Haluska - didn't get a chance
Jr Smith - yeah I know
    Tim Pickett - HAHA!
