The 2012 edition of training camp begins for the Saints a week from today. With contract disputes and bounty programs officially in the rear view, both the team and fans  can look forward to more important things, mainly football.

As training camp approaches, it’s time to examine the depth of each position across the roster, and look at who will make the team, who is currently on the bubble, and who will not make the final roster.

Training Camp begins next week.

With Drew Brees finally signing his record contract, the Saints quarterback situation looks a lot less dire than a week ago, to say the least. Brees’ re-arrival into the quarterback mix makes this position the least competitive heading into camp.

Sure Things:

Drew Brees

Next.

Chase Daniel

Daniel has emerged as the main backup to Brees during his time in New Orleans. This will be his fourth professional season, and his grasp of the offense makes him a competent second-stringer.

On the Bubble:

Sean Canfield

After being drafted by the Saints in the seventh round of the 2010 draft, Canfield has been the third string option behind Brees and Daniel for all of his career. He has seen time on the active roster during the past two seasons, but has been a member of the practice squad for primarily all of his career. Under Sean Payton, the Saints have usually kept only two quarterbacks on the active roster. However, if Canfield impresses coaches during training camp and makes significant progress from last year, he might sneak on and make the final cut. I highly doubt that will happen, but stranger roster moves have taken place in the past.

Maybe Next Year:

Luke McCown

McCown was brought in during the early part of the offseason. With stints in Cleveland, Tampa Bay, and Jacksonville, McCown has been a journeyman backup for all of his career. With Brees officially back on the roster, and Daniel firmly in place as the second option, he will most likely be released.
