Um what's ms.benson planning on doing
This could help him in the ROY Race
God we just got the best kid
Meanwhile Gayle Benson is trending on Twitter nationally
This is an amazing gesture and a great sign of him being a leader in his community but this kid's a 19 year old on a rookie contract. This leadership should be starting with Gayle Benson, the team's owner with a net worth of $3 billion https://t.co/LQuo2iWOxV
— sreekar (@sreekyshooter) March 13, 2020
Gayle Benson, 73 years old - $3.2 billion
— aims (@yungaims) March 13, 2020
Zion Williamson, 19 years old - $8 million
It’s not the job of a 19 year old rookie, when Gayle Benson net worth is 400 times more than him.
19-year old kid showing more generosity than Gayle Benson who owns the Pelicans and has a net worth of $3 billion https://t.co/MjaT03ooJs
— Michael Cohen (@speechboy71) March 13, 2020
Hundreds of tweets like this right now!
I’m just grateful we have such a great man and Zion. If Gayle wants to be a snob we’ll at least we have a good man in Zion.
And on and on
This is an AMAZING thing for Zion Williamson to do, but Gayle Benson is worth over $3 BILLION
— Eric Rosenthal (@ericsports) March 13, 2020
Maybe team owners should be the ones paying arena workers? https://t.co/T0z9bbS2nz
Great human. Also multi-billionaire Gayle Benson should've done this already https://t.co/njpH9zDmxv
— Jason Kirk, social distancing expert (@thejasonkirk) March 13, 2020
This is actually really messed up, maybe Gayle Benson (who is a billionaire) can take a few million dollars from her pedophile priest defense fund and pay her employees sick leave https://t.co/6tsYpNbz19
— Brian Gaar (@briangaar) March 13, 2020
This is awesome by Zion.
— Mike Finger (@mikefinger) March 13, 2020
But, by the way, Pelicans owner Gayle Benson is worth $2.8 billion. https://t.co/A5gRz5SjKb
Yup. I see she is trending
And I agree
Zion is an incredible kid. And Gayle is an incredible owner. I am sure she does plenty...I know she does plenty of charitable things. Like millions$$$ of things. She just doesn't announce it on FB And Twitter.
Yeah, Zion is awesome and this is great of him.
Shouldn't be his responsibility. Like others have said, billionaire ownership should be doing it.
Just a matter of Zion volunteering to do it before the owner did.
Bad optics on timing and no slight on Mrs B is all Im taking from it.
I mean, aren't other players doing similar things around the league? I know one player is doing this in the NHL. Do we know for sure the stadium workers weren't going to get paid? Is it possible this only looks bad because Zion announced this before the organization had a chance to announce anything publicly? All of this is really uncharted territory and news is changing by the hour.
Other players have also pledged to do similar, yes. Blake Griffin, Giannis, Kevin Love.
Some other owners, like Mark Cuban, have also already confirmed they will do it.
The response the Pelicans put out to Zions announcement is that they had been discussing something with the Smoothie King Centre ownership to work something out, before Zion came out and said he would do it. They said it was somewhat complicated due to only being renters of the building, which is why there had been no announcement yet.
I don't really buy it; they can't announce that they will be doing something cause they're only renters so it's difficult, but Zion can commit? Even if it's true that they were working on something, it's dreadful PR. Should have put out an early statement to the effect of "details will be confirmed at a later date, but Mrs Benson and the New Orleans Pelicans will be doing all they can to ensure arena staff are properly compensated for the time that will be missed during the NBA suspension".
I have a friend that is an usher. ASM nor the Pelicans have not communicated with them other than to tell them the games are canceled. Credit Zion for stepping up to the plate. The Pelicans & ASM piggybacked on it knowing they would get the backlash. I guess that is how Coperate Trump America is these days. Let us not let this take away the awesome thing Zion did.
Bravo Zion! You have won New Orleans Zion.
She will have to do something if she cares about her image.
It’s just a reason to turn a wonderful story into a cheap shot at a billionaire. Gayle has been a good owner and I’d bet she would have stepped in. Poor stuff from talking heads and Twitter dunces
Props to Zion's mom as well, this lady raised such a wonderful human being! You can tell that mom instilled great values to her kids.
And does anyone have an indication of what Gayle's plans are? We have no idea if she already had something similar in the works, or how expansive it might be. Remember, she's not a Mark Cuban, who will praise himself to the masses just to get airtime.
It was late because she took so long that a player already stepped in and did it. Mark Cuban, who I don't like for other reasons, stated he'd be covering Mavs staff within 6 hours of the shut-down; is Mark Cuban not busy with other things? Does he not own other stuff, and have other employees?
instead of people just being happy that the low paying workers will be compensate during this outbreak,, jealous people who live pay check to pay check saw a quick opportunity to take a shot at a billionaire smh........it should not matter who is paying for it,,just be happy for those workers....
Mark Cuban loves the spotlight. Of course he went public immediately. Gayle's not that type of person. Doesn't mean she wasn't already working on a plan. You're focusing on the NBA ONLY as the be-all and end-all of the world. There's much more in play here. Gayle's been a damn good owner. Maybe go call out the other 20+ teams that still haven't made a statement yet.
Also, SKC employees are not Pels staff. Cuban's paying for Mavs staff. Is he also paying for the American Airlines Arena employees?
This. For all we know Gayle was working out the finer details behind closed doors and Zion spoke publicly before they could work everything out.
If nobody had come out with this publicly, I doubt anyone would even mention Gayle or any of the owners. It’s just people desperate for a negative angle.
Which is exactly what happened. Everyone throwing shade at Gayle for all of this is sooooo annoying.

The Pels were in discussions with the vendor (who controls salaries) but were dealing w an unknown timetable of NBA suspension, contracts, etc...so it wasn’t yet completed.
Then Zion just offered on his own to step in and handle 30 days of it. https://t.co/6znaKwNMJz
i was going to say something earlier about cuban lol.....
cuban is a show off and saw opportunity to get good pr for the mavs as being first to say it out loud and get the pub because espn and others were giving him credit.....cuban could have done this privately but everyone has their own way of doing things......
the warriors were the first to announce that they were playing without fans because of the virus so is it possible that the warriors were the first to also say they were going to pay the arena employees for a month for being off but said it privately?....
like i said,,its jealous people who dont like people with big money who are taking shots at the owners instead of just being happy that those employees are being paid until the NBA figure out what they are going to do...
In email to players, the NBPA spelled out terms on a doomsday provision included in CBA that could free owners from paying players a percentage of their salaries should rest of season be lost to the coronavirus pandemic. Story on ESPN: https://t.co/s3cQSqCN8w
— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) March 13, 2020
This Sunday is last paycheck for players? Do the Owners fire off the doomsday plan?
YES. He is paying arena employees
https://www.foxnews.com/media/mark-c...rena-employees
I know I’m just ranting now. Nothing on TV for at least 30 days. I’ll Lighten things up. I’m just grateful we have Zion in New Orleans. Let’s be grateful we have him and traded the Potato Chip. I wonder if him and his friend are paying for people that lost work in LA?
Essentially, isn’t it Gails money anyway?
Rod Walker’s editorial was perfect
https://www.nola.com/news/coronaviru...c85898be4.html
He will be bigger than Drew Brees.
Whether there was a plan or that Pelicans & Corporate ASM were piggybacking after the feedback we shall never know. What we do know is that those workers are the ones that make them the millions. What we do know is this is bigger than Drew Brees and he(Zion)is only 19 as Rod Walker said in his editorial. https://www.nola.com/news/coronaviru...c85898be4.html . We should be blessed we have Zion and that overlaps everything.
It has nothing to do with social media. People have been (rightfully) criticising the ultra-wealthy for literally thousands of years. Jesus Christ literally did it.
The reality is that the Pels released a statement to 'explain' the situation with regards to why there had been no update or released plan from their end. The statement was terrible and reflected poorly on them, and came off as making excuses that were particularly flimsy. The owner of the Pelicans has a net worth larger than the combined remaining salaries of every member of the roster, multiplied by 10: there is no way that anyone but her should be putting up the money.
This isn't a critique specific to her either; any owner who doesn't put their money where their mouth is in a situation like this should be absolutely lambasted.
And who cares if Cuban's quick announcement was a result of his love of the spotlight? The result was that people knew what their immediate future looked like. That's what's important, and that's why Benson and the Pels should have made an early statement, if they were planning on covering everyone, that clarified that something would be worked out so that people knew what their future was.
generosity is also done privately without us knowing about it....and none of the employees who work games has not missed a game check yet far as i know,so coming down on our owner for not making a statement in the time some of yall wanted sound like a personal issue to me....
zion made this public but could have done this privately and talk with the org and just let the workers know that he was going to pay their salary until this outbreak get taken care of and the public didnt have to know anything......zion making this public is the problem that made the jealous people act out....
Do you listen to yourself? How dare you say this about Zion! By the way the employees lost a weekend’s paycheck already with the Sunbelt Tournament cancellation. Do the math and that is $200- $700 bucks at least. A lot of money lost for part time work. Zion gets it. You don’t .

Think about that!
Quote:
This commitment to “taking care of all of our employees, our full-time, our part-time” should be league wide. As Obama said, they have an obligation to do so. This isn’t about feel-good generosity, it’s about right and wrong. When NBA teams get hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer funds to build new stadiums, it is always done with the promise of jobs. These promises are always problematic, since they often, when not unionized, don’t come with a living wage and of course by their nature comprise seasonal, as opposed to year round, work. The coronavirus response has shown just how precarious these workers’ jobs are.
Quote:
Now is put up or shut up time. The ownership plutocracy must provide paid leave for these workers, because promises made have to be matched by promises kept. One team, my hometown squad the Washington Wizards. and team governor Ted Leonsis will be doing the right thing and funding salaries of arena workers during this crisis. I spoke to one, who said to me, “Paid leave means I can stay home, care for my kids when they’re home from school. That means groceries. That means everything.” It’s unconscionable that half the teams are still dragging their feet. It shouldn’t take a 19-year-old rookie to shame these cosseted billionaires into doing their duty and to make sure everyone can play a role in getting us through this pandemic in one piece.
And kudos to Obama
https://sports.yahoo.com/coronavirus...152543017.html
people who hate billionaires saw opportunity to take shots at the owner because it was made public that zion offered to pay for those workers....some posters are saying zion should not have to do this,,,the owner should do it and bashing the owner because the owner didnt make an announcement in the time they would had wanted the owner to move......im strictly talking about the jealous posters and how the public announcement about zion paying for those workers salary enable those types to act out on the owner instead of just being happy those workers were being compensate....
Truthfully, the only way he becomes bigger than Brees is if he re-signs on for a 3rd contract. That'll show his dedication to the city.
CP3 was revered here for everything he did in NOLA, now he's not as cherished. Everyone loved AD, until he embarrassed everyone including himself. Both didn't re-up after their 2nd contract. We'll see if Zion does the same in 6 years. Because the clock is ticking.
