4-Team Gordon Trade that Makes Deng a Hornet / Pelican

I normally don't get into trade stuff, but in this case, I tried to find a way to tie existing trade rumors, known financial pressures, and a general knowledge of teams and players to get a deal that largely shuffles deck chairs in terms of players, but gives each team involved some key pluses.

I have no reason to believe that this is best of such trades, but I made it to show that a deal for Gordon does not have to bring back albatross contracts or total projects.

My hope (stated in the linked article) is that others use similar thinking to come up with a new vein of trade ideas.

The Summary:

Lakers

Lose: Pau Gasol
Gain: Andrea Bargnani, Landry Fields
Financial: Potential 8-figure tax savings

Raptors

Lose: Andrea Bargnani, Landry Fields
Gain: Carlos Boozer
Financial: Short-term savings, may avoid tax

Bulls

I happen to like Deng and think Miller could adequately replace Aminu once he stops fouling people. So I'm okay with it.

Well, it's not blind robbery like a lot of the other threads, but this is why I stand by my notion that you need to wait another year to trade. IMO Deng would be about as much as we could get back for Gordon at the current time. Hopefully in a year we can get a little more value.

I'm fine trading, I'm fine waiting. The key parts of the deal will be around. Some stuff may need happen to make the little bits of it work out (very important of course).

Deng is a two time all star, plays a ton of minutes per game, and hasn't missed more than 20% of his games in 5 years and has started 82 games twice. The dude a solid defender (all defensive second team last season) and seems to have the right fit. Gordon falls short in many of these categories, like All-Star appearances, all-defensive teams.

Hinrich may be a little over-paid, but he's a solid player who will expire after next season.

Aminu and Mason are expiring. The one we declined an option on, the other we only offered 1 year to. I don't see those as key assets.

If you love Gordon, almost no deal will satisfy. My point, there is a reasonable deal out there that can bring back an All-Star for him. Why? We have some salary to play with and the other teams are in tax territory where it's getting far more dangerous.

About the Bulls: they are the key here, and are getting the highest upside, but their two key players in the deal have injury issues currently. They are taking risk too.

It's a complicated deal, which is why the article is there.

I like the trade for us. We get Deng who is solid.
Capt. Kirk is better than any backup pg we have here, and he will be off the books in no time.
RIP is RIP. Guy is old, but he is a team player. He would be able to teach alot of our guys the art of creating on offense while never touching the ball.

I like it from a short and long term perspective....and oh yeah...none of us are happy with EG anyway, and you NEED to have veteran experience on a team as young as our's or we will always be wandering in the desert.

Then Aminu must be terrible. lol Deng is FAR from mediocre. I'm not a fan of trading away Gordon and Aminu for Deng, who may not even keep after 2014 since he will be turning 29-30 at the end of his deal.

I just don't feel we are getting any assets back. I can see a situation where all 3 players the hornets acquire not being on the team after 2014, and that's a deal breaker for me even thought it limits our risk, I guess.

But think of the money your team is saving, and those trade pieces. You are a player in any trade on the market because of those 3 guys and their a)contracts b) ability to push a winning team into a title team.

I don't think Rip and Hinrich are NOT pushing anyone over the top much less the hornets who are a good 2-3 years from even being considered a contender. Honestly, I'd rather draft picks than RIP and Hinrich. Deng can come in a serve us for a year, but I don't think we end up keeping him.

Yes, this trade leaves us with hardly any money committed to the 2014-2015 cap, I guess.

The only player under contract after 2014 (if we go with this) is Ryan Anderson with Team options for AD, Rivers, and Lopez. So realistically with this trade we will go into 2014-2015 with only 22 Million committed if we pick up all the options.

In the article, it is noted that if waived by the end of June, Rip's deal is only guaranteed for $1m next season, not $5m. That's a plus, and why it only chews up about $5m in cap space next offseason while giving more tradeable assets: a solid players on a fair expiring deal, and a good backup on a slightly overpriced expiring deal.

About the not keeping the assets . . . that's kind of the point. The crux is do you want to take a chance on Gordon or take a chance on Dell with tradeable assets instead.

I don't think the deal is a home run, do it, I love it thing. It's something to consider and may need to be tweaked if it's even near doable. But, again, it illustrates that you can trade Gordon can get some quality. Deng? Maybe not. But trade advocates don't have to settle for Gordon for Bargnani sorts of deals. This idea, then, may change whether we decide to accept Gordon's risk. I just find interesting.

Personally, I would do the deal if I were those teams, with the Bulls being the weakest link. I can see why the Hornets would be reluctant, regardless. Float some picks and cash around, maybe things change. Who knows?

Yes and no. Removing long term salary is part of it, but it would be replaced, at least in part, before then. It gives a chance to continue to churn the roster. Do they want to do that? I don't know.

I think to a degree. We just have no way of really knowing if that includes Gordon. That's the $58m question.

I agree 100%. I was more just thinking out loud trying to see what our risks and benefits are. I think if there were a draft pick or so here, I'd be more inclined to accept this deal.

Nah, I'm with you. I'm just talking too. I had all this junk in my head, so it's good to talk it out over here too.

In the article I state that it works as is in terms of the CBA, but picks and cash can be included to make things work.

This is a complex deal, and it'd work with Vasquez going instead of Mason, for instance, which may be required to get a pick, etc. Others have said the Lakers wouldn't do the deal. Chicago might not since Gasol is hurt right now.

Lots of risks to be analyzed.

Supposedly Toronto isn't interested in Boozer. I read this somewhere but I can remember where, so I have no link. It may have been Rotoworld.

I am beginning to get on board with Deng. He's not a superstar but he's a damn good basketball player who works really hard and is as tough as they come. His non shooting wrist was hurt last year, and he delayed surgery last summer for the Olympics and ten delayed it again for the NBA season.

People are looking at this from a different angle than 42 and myself.

We view it as a way for us to gain cap flexability, while holding on to some very interesting trade pieces that will have no need for upselling. And if you like Deng (and who doesn't) your netting a better player than anyone in this entire trade. Deng is proven, and legit. Everyone else is an also ran (EG included). And if you don't want him long term he is definitely a guy Indy or GS would take for George or Barnes.

Others here are viewing this as a bad move as we get rid of EG and Aminu and don't get any key players for our long term. Well neither is in our long term plans, so why are we fretting about this?

That's people post trades. To get different angles an points of view.

This team is really young, and it needs a big time veteran presence like Deng. I'm on board, we'd have a huge hole at the 2 but maybe we could land Mayo with out cap space. This trade also maintains our cap flexibility like others have said already. Hopefully draft Burke, damn I'm liking it more and more. Give me Deng

I linked to an article in the longer post that says the Boozer+Robinson for Bargnani+Lucas deal is there for Toronto to take, but they haven't taken it. Their reluctance could mean they don't like Boozer or they don't like him with the other costs. That deal, for instance, takes them a good deal into the tax. This deal takes their salary down.

It's not clear it'd work, but it would change the look of the deal for them potentially.

Deng+Hinrich for Gordon+Aminu works in the Trade Machine and works in terms of positions, but I don't think Chicago would do that. It's repalcing short term good with longer term risk while leaving them trying to move Boozer. In the more complicated deal, they get that fixed which may offset the risk increase I just laid out.

Frankly, I really like the depth this trade discussion has. Not all discussions get into this many angles of a trade, but this one is pretty big, so there's more opportunity. I'd like to go ahead and say thanks for that.

I recommend you guys read the original article to look at all the wrinkles. Look for more.

I guess I just like Aminu too much, and figure you still are going to plan to move Deng in the next couple of years. Gordon is such a wildcard as far as if his value will go up, go down or stay the same. I think we'll look to move him over the summer when we can trade him to any team without his permission. That alone could/should raise his value because it increases our options.

The Summer thing is a great point. It will increase the number of teams that can get him in trade, and that will not decrease his value. It will not increase the value if such a trade can be worked now. My thought has always been that any trade would take place this offseason or after for that reason.

The point here is that quality may be able to be had for Gordon now. This is contrary to the common idea that we can only get bad contracts back for him without sending out assets. I just want to spur some different thinking, or get my thinking corrected.

I think that it would be fun to get Terrance Ross but I don't see the Raps giving him up. That is a core piece. A team of Boozer, Gay, Lowery, and DeRozen is actually pretty solid.

It seems that way on the surface, but they want to get rid of Boozer's contract.

As for this trade as is, I'd much rather sit pat and roll the dice on Gordon for the time being. I'd love to have more vet leadership and like Deng a lot, but I'd rather keep an improving Aminu and pair him with an Otto Porter or Budinger next year.
