Al Jefferson

We've been talking about trying to sign Pekovic a lot on this board, and I for one liked him assuming the deal was within a 7-8 million dollar range. But it's seeming increasingly likely that he's going to command 10+ and stay with the Wolves (KAHNNN!), which is not worth it. The reason I loved Pek was him being able to let AD stay at the 4, which i believe is his best position (i know some disagree), and his ability to score in the post and take on larger defenders so Davis wouldn't get manhandled underneath.

When I look at Jefferson, I see a guy who can do all of that, as well as hit the 15 footer and grab defensive rebounds (24.6 Defensive rebounding % good for 15th all time) unlike our current starting 5. I guess my point is, if we're even going to consider giving a guy like Pek 9 a year, wouldn't out money be spent better handing Al a 4 year 12 a year deal and getting someone better at pretty much everything? what do you guys think?

I dig it. Would we really only have to give him 4 mil a year though? Seems a bit low.

I've been a Jefferson fan since he entered the league so of course I'm board with singing him.

If you think Lopez is bad at PnR defense...

I like the guy and love his offensive skills. Just not sure how well he would fit here.

Exactly what I was thinking. He's a huge liability on defense and if Davis is going to stay at the 4, then how is Anderson and him supposed to each play 32+ min a game?

Anderson can get 39 a game pretty easily.

So your big no in this deal is bc Jason Smith's minutes are limited? Interesting. Also our biggest link is our point guard by far, with or without Jefferson. Thanks for the input though, i just wanted to see the general consensus.

I have echoed your feelings about Jefferson in the past.....Personally, I would like to see us target either he or Hickson

No, all I mean is we need a 3 man big rotation and 2 of them are already here. Davis and Anderson will hopefully be here a long time. We need to add a C who plays good defense and rebounds well. Al Jeff doesn't play good defense, so I'd rather spend the 12 million elsewhere, but I wouldn't be upset if we added him. Al, Davis and Anderson all playing roughly 32-33 min a night would be a good big rotation.

We also need a big man who can create his own offense and get us easy buckets. Jefferson would give us that. Honestly, I believe Jefferson would be a better fit than Pek. 12M per is a bit more than I'd like to throw at him, but that's probably what it would take given th nature of FA.

I would be all for it.

I'd rather sign Hickson to a 3 year deal for 18 to 20M, but where does another big fit in?
We need a big who can rebound and take the big bodies.
Pek and Al will command too much and our problem is our perimeter defence so neither Pek nor Al will make up for that.

If the Pels sign any big this season I hope it's Hickson. He can play both positions if needed.

Then at the deadline you make the cut as to who is the least required big.
Smith, Lopez or Hickson.

My bet is Lopez maybe even on draft night.

I say they don't sign another big but I expect Smith to miss most of October and some of November
before he's back to himself. Hickson might be a good signing until Smith comes back and depending
on how Lopez and Hickson have gone then one of them could be traded for asset we require or packaged.

Go and give him 12 mil a year....when you buy a team. We don't need him here. The reason the Jazz no longer want him (and Jazz fans hate him) is because he doesn't play defense. He can get a rebound, but if you hate GV's def, you will be getting Dutch Dolores by both of them next year. If you had proposed this idea 4 years ago, yeah maybe you could have taught him some defense, but old dogs don't learn new tricks, and he is set in his ways.

Funny, I lived in Utah when the Jazz got rid of Boozer and brought Jefferson in, and the fans hated it, because they got a less injured version of the same guy. You would need Davis to step up his defensive game big time to compensate for this guys defensive inability.

I am content with being rid of GV for the right price if it nets us a guy with both avg. def and avg. off, but neither of those are Jefferson.

While jefferson is a beast in the post and rebounding he takes a high volume of shots and is a terrible defender and is only 6"10 he really is a power forward, if he was beter at D i would def say yes

Sadly, I have to agree... He even found a way to work Vasquez into his post :rolleyes:

By the way, I see a lot of stereotyping in this thread, but Al Jefferson is a totally decent defender. Last year, his defensive rating was 103, and this year it's 104 - very respectable numbers for an offensively minded big. He also shoots a TS% of 52.3%, which is very respectable/good considering the volume he shoots. His TO% is great (means he doesn't turn the ball over), and his WS/48 is terrific at .150 (even better last year at .173).

My only problem with him is I don't know what we'd do in late game situations with Jefferson, Davis, and Anderson. I can't see us spending on a big man like that who would expect to play late game situations. That's why I like J.J. Hickson, because he can give us great minutes, but wouldn't be in late.
