I don't think this is true... We looked a lot better than them, just got a little flustered in the 4th, started playing to not lose.
I'm taking a lot of positives out of this game in regards to the future.
Can anyone have confidence in Anderson guarding Aldridge???? What on earth ? I saw this happen several times and I think we got out coached.
Who ever is talking about die hard fans. Probably not many on here have been a fan since the Johsnon, Gill and Mourning years. But I consider myself a die hard. Yes George Shinn is an IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!! That's how long I've been a fan of this team. Almost since the beginning!!!!
Pelican champ you are right. We were totally lost on d in the 4th qtr. that's why Monty should have used a couple more timeouts!!!
Trying my best to keep my composure and not let myself get excited about the decent start we had. I told my wife after the 3rd quarter we might just be onto something this year, and then learned again why I can never let this team tease me with any hope of being a playoff team. I can't figure out why so many people cannot see how horrible a head coach we have. I think we have enough talent to win some games when all are healthy and we can win on pure talent but when it comes to managing a NBA game and having the intellect needed to win at this level against quality teams and above average head coaches we are badly handicapped.
Buzz man I am right there with you. Have never been impressed with Williams as a coach. But i will say, for all the stats Evans has compiled the first 9 games of the season. He is just not a very smart basketball player. I put this game on him mostly and Williams not realizing his team was rattled!!!!!!!
Totally agree with this. I wish more fans had this kind of takeaway. From what I saw on Twitter, I was expecting to come here to see alarm bells going off. Sucks to lose a winnable game, especially when going into the 4th with a lead. Can't wait for us to learn to play better. The end.
We should have put Withey, AD, Anderson, Gordon, Jrue on the court
My only other takeaway is that crowd in PDX. They stayed there while their team was down. If you were just listening you would have thought they were up the whole time. Great environment for a team. Meanwhile in NOLA the crowd is half asleep as AD makes history. I hope more people start backing the Pels.
This team is still growing and this last 4QT is here to remind it.
All players in the finishing 5 are culprit of this fall-down. Holiday and Evans tried their best to keep the ball in their hand most of the times. I mean, ok the system didn't go well since Davis can't get open but why taking wild floater with 3 guys in the paint instead of swinging the ball between other players ! On the other side of the spectrum, there's Davis who should say "scr*w that, pass me the ball at the elbow, I'll do the rest". There's also Ryan Anderson, aka the best-player-to-destroy-a-good-defensive-stop-by-not-grabbing-the-freaking-rebound. And last Gordon, the only guy who stays invisible most of the times but only reappears to make fouls.
So, all of this young players need to work on their own flaws because it may be a 82 season but at the end of the day, 1 win could make a diffrence between a playoff team or giving a lottery pick to the rockets.
Don't forget that we've only lost to playoff contenders so far, & it was close everytime. This team is making the playoffs.
There is a ton of positives to take from this game. I agree with you guys. But when you play that well for 3/4 of the game and come up empty, that should show them that you have little margin for error!!!! AD has to see the ball more, I mean the guy 14 / of 18 from the field.
Ryno has to play the 3 in the closing 5, we need Asik on the court to rebound and let AD stay on the other team PF. Lopez was the one who changed the game, AD had to come off Aldridge because Ryno can't guard the 5.
Ryno needs to learn he doesn't have to shoot every time he touches the ball in the 4th also. Especially on the road.
With Asik out and Ajinca looking a total goof, there was no way this team was going to stop Portland's run. You have to execute good offense until they get desperate and start chucking.
At least it will be trail by fire on the road this early. That's where 8 of the next 10 will be.
I'm very disappointed in Ryno. There's a leadership vacuum on the court after AD and he's the perfect player to fill it. He's got a unique combination of experience, youthfullness, size, and skill set and my heart breaks a little bit every time he forces a shot, doesn't move the ball or looked generally lost on offense unless he's flame-throwing. He has the ability to be a calming influence even when he's not rocket launching. I hope he sees that.
Some quotes on the loss. Three of them sound very similar. One not so much.
Anthony Davis
Eric GordonQuote:
"We just have to play better with the lead," Davis said. "We were forcing up shots instead of slowing the ball down, then pushing up the floor and trying to get into an offensive set. We were trying to play a one-on-one game."
Monty WilliamsQuote:
"We didn't play together. We weren't scoring the ball. We weren't passing the ball. Nobody was getting involved. We just didn't play together. And that's what happens when you don't."
Tyreke EvansQuote:
"In the fourth quarter for us, it became a one-on-one show," Williams said. "You can't play like that on the road."
Quote:
"We just weren't executing," Evans said. "It wasn't going for us and the shots weren't falling. We were just trying to get a bucket at the end, and on the road we just have to do a better job at that."
Man stop using we tyreke, change it up to YOU AND JRUE, the team played well really well, and you and jrue ruined the win..
Gordon for once is spot on..
I just finished watching the game.
The things that stood out to me was the defense on Rolo in the fourth.
That rebound he got off a second chance effort and then pass to Mathews for the 3 was the killer.
Holiday looking for Davis on the pick and pop and having too force up two ugly shots when the defender
sticks to Davis really killed things too.
However Evan's 3 point shot with 19 seconds left on the clock was just plain stupid and that was game over.
Apart from that I wouldn't have said that Jrue or Evans played hero ball.
Portland played clever offence and executed better defense in the fourth then they did the whole game.
They took a risk and crowded Davis and let Jrue or Evans win it.
If Jrue's shot was falling in the fourth like it was in the beginning then the game would have been over.
Let's not forget Portland were missing Batum.
If Asik plays we wins this game easily.
Damnit, Holiday and Evans lost us that game with their low IQ in the 4th, chucking up shot after shot and looking to be the hero of the game.
Feed your best player, {edited-veiled cursing}
Tonight is where we need to show if we're a big boy team now. Come out and win and let AD drop 40 on DMC.
No, I am giving up on my old ways. My day to day used to be set on the rise and fall of my favorite sports teams. With the Saints, Pels, and Michigan I am now more at content with just saying, "Well, that sucks." (after a loss), or "Alright!" (after a win). I am no longer in live or die by the outcome of a game, and its healthier this way.
Don't get me wrong, I still have opinions on my favorite teams, but I am not going off to some Crusade for them. They aren't paying me to do that, so why should I?
A more experienced team wins this game. Could end up being one of those loses that is more influential to the teams development moving forward than a win would have been. The game kind of went the way these games against Portland usually go. They didn't do enough in the 3rd quarter to extend the lead, the Blazers had life entering the fourth and it went as expected. They started putting up 3s, Lillard started doing Lillard things, the building came alive, and the young Pelicans couldn't handle it. Games against the Blazers the past few years always seem to be 50/50. While better play in the fourth would be nice, how the game transpired wasn't shocking.
Will be interesting to see how they respond tonight. Especially the guard play down the stretch.
I think it's only a matter of time before false allegations about AD being unhappy come out.
I don't think it to early to develop that mindset. It's not a negative thing (if anything it is positive). Why be consumed in sports when there are so many other positive and uplifting things to be consumed in?
I love sports too, but I also love surfing and helping out with the Boy Scouts. 2 of those 3 I can actually improve and change. I like feeling like I am part of something, and changing it for the better, and Loomis and Dell haven't returned my calls.
I haven't been watching the games much, but I just watched Davis' highlights against the Blazers(and along with his other big games). He's starting to show me the type of game I thought people where giving him credit for the last two years. It's still somewhat awkward but he's putting in on the floor and beating people, but maybe more importantly he's hitting his jumper more consistently. This combine with the other things he was already bringing to the table as a PNR/PNP option and running the court is looking really good so far. I can't be any happier to appear to be wrong about Davis as a superstar in this league.
Bump...since posters still giving DT a hard time. Crow post above.
It's gonna take a hell of a lot more than that "eating crow" to stop my hard times.
One nice post after years of straight dogging a player is nice but let's step this game up. Gotta make a brand new thread with "I Was Completely And Utterly Wrong" to even move my needle.
He was wrong, yeah. Still don't get why people gotta be a crappy about it.
