If NY gets the first overall pick, it has two real choices. Either it can keep the pick, and try and sell a 27 year old Kyrie Irving on the championship potential of himself with an 18 year old rookie Zion, or it can trade the pick to us, and sell Kyrie on the much more real championship potential of himself with a 25 year old proven superstar AD. Similarly, they want to attract KD with their second open max contract slot: you think 30 year old KD is more likely to go to NY if there's Kyrie + AD waiting for him, who are already a finals prospect in the East already, or Kyrie + 18 year old rookie Zion?
Zion is good, and I fully believe he is going to be a franchise player for some team someday (hopefully us). But don't get it twisted, AD is better right now, and he fits the timeline for KD and Kyrie better to actually win a championship. If New York is interested in Kyrie or KD, they're interested in AD over Zion.
