WESLEY, THE SNIPER, JOHNSON
But Johnson is giving me hope that he IS that wing.
It is inexcusable that we didn't run Gobert enough to where he still has gas.
But great effort reserves.
Not sure why Diallo likes taking those 12+ foot shots. He has no range.
We are gonna lose by almost exactly one Anthony Davis worth of points.
That run died one of the most horrifically painful deaths as soon as we put a starter back in. Crazy.
And this isn't some loony "the backups are better than Jrue" thread. Jrue is insanely better than them. Just an observation.
Okafor looks damn good.
Frank with that tasty 13 points in 22 minutes, and Okafor with 11 and 6 in 13 minutes. Good signs of depth, there.
can't say I'm high on okafor. was more impressed with the hustle and energy out of cheick.
You know what? We lost.
I ain't even mad. I had us 3-2 at this point, having lost this game and the rockets game. I didn't expect to win against Houston, and I didn't expect to lose quite so definitively here (though I did expect AD to play). So 4-1 heading off onto the road is totally fine with me, and I'll take it.
I’m not mad, we kept the game close. We should have rode with the backups, and let them work through things. Our bench was giving it to the Jazz.
Definitely liking frank over Clark. I wish the pels would have let okafor bang with Gobert and loved the hustle from the backups.
Lose by 20 without AD. Had within 8 in the 4th. I'm pretty happy with that.
It's an 82 game season not 10. We need AD at his best on the road trip.
Definitely like Frank as a key guy off the bench. He just has “it”. Call him Pennywise.
Wes Johnson was a fun one to watch as well, but I suspect we will see lots of up and down games from him, that is his MO afterall.
Confirmed my fears when they play teams like Utah. I think they lose this one even with AD playing. Tough matchup without a big to move Gobert around.
What's concerning is the slow pace they played against the Jazz. The Jazz dictated the pace. If you see what the 3rd string bench did by moving the ball they cut the lead from 28 to 8 in 10 minutes of good ball movement. That's on the starters. Not just AD missing. They gave up before the tip off.
I don't think that's necessarily the case. There were moments, especially in that first quarter (that we won) where pace wasn't too bad. Not what we expect, sure, but we were running sometimes and it was clear they weren't ready. It was at the end of the first and the very first two minutes of the second where the Jazz really slowed down their offense, and it was clear that without a vocal leader, the team just didn't have the will to push back against that.
It doesn't help that every time we moved faster than an iceberg the refs called us for a foul. They don't know the difference between a quick screen and a moving one.
I just hate the Utah Jazz. There are one of the most boring teams in the NBA. I want someone to give a hard foul to Rubio and Gobert. I hope they dont win anything. F... Them. Lets move on.
It's just hard to take anything away from this game because AD, Payton, Randle, and Miller were all injured.
Even still if we shot anywhere near 50% from the field the game would have been extremely winnable.
I don't know what Gentry is doing but he's got to stop giving Hill so many minutes. He just drags our offense down.
I think what we can take away is that our team has grit to it up and down the roster. We'd already seen the major players show that, against LAC and against the Nets, but the bench was a largely unknown factor. What we got to see was Wesley Johnson, Frank Jackson, Jahlil Okafor, and Kenrich Williams set foot on an NBA court, against a solid team, play double digit minutes, and look like they have an actual game. For me, it's reassuring to know that the 9th, 10th, and 11th guys on our bench have no quit in them.
We also got to see Jackson play real NBA minutes for the first time, meaningful minutes not just the spare change in garbage time. And he looked good. His shot popped in and out a few times (happened to the whole team) but he was fast, his shot looked smooth, and he can draw fouls. Wesley Johnson showed that while he's not a long term solution, he should be able to plug in 15 minutes a game for us and play defense. Okafor showed that he can still score, still rebound a little, and his defense (while inconsistent) was actually very good on several possessions.
No you can't take away much, especially long term, because of who didn't play and who barely played, but what we saw was encouraging, I think.
listening to Isiah Thomas and kevin mchale talk on tv and they said that a coach will play a player he trust over a player with better skills,ect......we have been using a 8 man rotation so maybe gentry dont trust the bench this early in the season......
hell,,i believe if we had a bench that can score points we can be a dangerous team....randall is the only bench player in the 8 man rotation that score in double figures....
