Hearing: Omri Casspi most likely gets waived by Pelicans after Asik three-way trade is completed Tuesday. Casspi then gets to pick new home

Uhm he's the only real 3 on the roster...why waive him at all since we actually wanted him as a part of the team?
Is Casspi's contract not guaranteed? He was supposed to make 1.06 million next season. If we wave him does he count on our books or does it in fact free up his 1 million elsewhere?
Any yes, now we have no SF's, something has to be up.
Man i'm hoping some team out there thinks they can turn eric gordon around lol.
i don't mind them waving Omri. give a young guy that spot. casspi goes team to team & everyone thinks he'll hit his potential and he never comes close. probably just a guy houston wanted off their books
I don't understand why we even included him in the deal though. Houston could just have easily waived him themselves. Unless we need the roster spot, I am kinda disappointed he was not retained as a backup (or at least included with Babbitt to get a slightly higher salaries SF from a team looking to dump a player). There must be some other plan though.
Yeah I'm confused as to why we would just dump Casspi.
Scalpers have found a way to sell tickets legally above face value by attaching a worthless trinket to it. Here is this pen and two tickets for $1000. Now, it's legal.
Most people throw out the pen afterwards.
Huh? Casspi was not needed in the deal to make it legal. The only thing I can see is if maybe another team is looking to unload a player that we value more and we need the roster spot (maybe to take a second player in a deal). Hopefully, eventually it will make sense.
It's a position of glaring need, and as a backup he's great depth.
Maybe we didn't want him as a player in the first place. Also, doesn't this give us cap space?
From what I read Casspi's contract becomes guaranteed in august. Perhaps we wanted him to play in summer league to see what we had before his contract became guaranteed and he didn't want to. It's all guessing though at this point. I trust Dell (except for when it comes to matching RFA's) ;) I am sure there was a reason...
We don't know all the motivations. Maybe, for some reason Houston wanted us to cut them as opposed to them having to do it.
We can't know everything that went on when the teams discussed. My main point was that it happened, and if he is waived, he is the pen. Obviously we didn't want him. We wanted Asik. We got Asik.
Doesn't matter what I think though, does it? If the staff likes another guy better, then they are the evaluators. Also, like I said, it's not just Miller or Southerland. Fells and Jones showed out yesterday. Brandon Rush is holding a workout for teams in Vegas. Plenty of options. If they don't like Casspi's game, they don't like it. As I said on the pod last night, not much of a defender and his shot takes an hour to get off. You listen to Gates and all he keeps saying is that we are looking for SF's who can defend their position.
That ain't Casspi.
Someone in the summer league is going to be a better SF option for us.....

Casspi was needed to make it work on Rockets end. Pels never had any interest. Waive him. Done and done. Right back where we were 24 hours ago. Dell did a masterful trade, has Room and min contracts plus intriguing options in SL to fill the SF position.
His spot up numbers last year were TERRIBLE. Shot about 32% on half court spot ups and in transition. I mean, better than Aminu, but well below average. Rockets put him on 4's more often than 3's on the other end.
End of the day, there is so little difference between the 250th and 880th best player in the world. At that point, go for fit and skill set. It's clear that the staff likes someone better, either on the team or out in FA. Casspi was included because Houston needed him to be. Not because we were interested
I like Fells a lot but don't think he's a wing player at all.
I think most of us are looking at what he did around his rookie season but, since the he's been alright. He's never quite broke out like every thought he was.
First of all, we already have too many players deserving of playing time than playing time to go around if they're healthy. So you plug in AD to start the game at SF when playing against Carmelo or Durant, and you play Tyreke or Salmons off the bench. And then you can start Ryno at SF when playing a SF not as quick or athletic who or mostly shoots jumpers.
Any situation in which Salmons or anyone else on this team starts instead of Ryno is a fiasco. You have to start your best, your most important players. You have to give the players most important to team success the most minutes and time together to put yourself in the best situation to be the most successful. Especially when it comes to spacing the court for your starters and last years inability to put up enough 3's to be an NBA team. That is the full range of possibilities.
AD will defenitly not start as our small forward! probably not a single time!
and casspi is waived so I guess its either salmons who gets the start (but in this case he would not end games or play more than 20 min I guess) or we start tyreke at the three, maybe MM is right an Monty thinks differently about Reke playing the SF when he knows asik and AD are behind him on the defensive end
Dequan Jones is having a better summer league than Fells I would rather both but if I had to chose I would pick Jones
Bring Jones, Fells, Carter, and Southerland into camp. Let them fight for that last spot. No need to pick one now based off Summer League
MM,
Who do you see as in season options? Someone we might be able to grab before the trade deadline, if the SF need is still there. By chance, could John "Expiring Contract" Salmons be used in a trade?
I don't think the team is thinking like that. I think they are hoping for and expecting the best.
I think we see Miller sign and we sign another SL guy to a contract that doesn't become fully guaranteed until January or February, thereby giving us the flexibility to release him in anticipation for a March pickup or create a roster spot for a trade.
I think we are going to try to roll with this roster plus Miller and a Summer League guy, and if something comes up we will explore it then. But I don't think we have signed roster just with the thought of trading him in February in mind.
I think a few will be brought into training camp and the decision will be based more off that than glorified pickup games.
For some reason, Josh Carter just feels like the choice, but Fells can be the guy too. I am doing a piece with our projected rotation that will be up later in the week, and if Tyreke is going to play as much SF as I expect, there might be more of an opening at the 2, so Jones or Fells can fit there.
One of those 3 guys. The thing I don't think this staff will like about Fells is that he gambles a lot on the defensive end and sometimes takes bad shots. Now, they have been going in the last two games, but a coach thinks more about the process than the results.
Wait, Peeta from the Hunger Games was only drafted in 2010? I thought he had been in the league longer than that. So this should be a nice breakout type year for him since he never got much of a shot in Portland.
Pelicans training camp will be very interesting
I wonder what it'd take to pry Reggie Bullock away from LAC.
Nah. Fells actually has 2" more wingspan than Jones. Dude is 6'5" with over 7' wingspan. Jones is 6'7" with 6'11" wingspan. Plus Fells has about 10-15 pounds on Jones.
I'm really interested in seeing How it plays out though. Through 3 games I give the nod to Fells but that could easily change.
I'm all on the Fells train. Rooting for him to make the team.
Don't we have two spots left though? If so they should both be able to fit on the roster
