Now isn't the time to play it safe, IMO. Or the time to roll into training camp with guys who are borderline NBA talents in key roles. Go get the obviously talented (but overpaid) castoffs from other teams and hope your coaches can get the best out of them in new roles.

Crabbe's salary is expensive as hell just for a 3 point specialist

Brandon Knight is the more reasonable trade that makes a lot of sense for so many reasons. Phoenix is desperate to move his salary after Bledsoe had a career year and Tyler Ulis going from a 2nd round pick into a legit starting PG or 6th man at the very least. Just before last year BK averaged 17/5 for 3 straight seasons. We're desperate for that and he's still 25. I wish we can get Bledsoe, but it'd require more in a trade for him compared to Knight. I think Knight can still make us a contender with our roster because his drop in numbers was more about the rest of the Suns' backcourt emerging than his actual ability

Yes. And the Spurs are a huge ? for next year. Aldridge is disgruntled. Parker is an old 35, Gasol is 37, Gay will be 31, and Ginobilli should be retiring.

They are primed for a down year next year.

Suns was supposedly willing to trade Knight for a 2nd rounder at the deadline this past February. It isn't hard to get him at all, but it's a matter of making cap room

How is Knights contract better than Crabbes? Both 3 years, Crabbes 3+ mill xtra per year, but 3rd yr player option on his contract. More flexibility possible. Really not much of a difference.

Scuttlebutt is Jrue is penciled in at the starting #2. If that is the case, w/ Moore & Grits, then a #2 is NOT priority. Dell is looking for a starting #1 and a Back-up #3 (3 and D) guy. MLE on Amo, Dunleavy et al. Preferrably Bledsoe, Lin & if we have to dumpster dive, I ay D Rose.

It's more of how they fit and what their teams would be asking for in return.

Knight can still be a starting PG with a lot of scoring. I don't think Crabbe can improve much on what's he already done. That's another Morris Peterson waiting to happen

I could literally do this all night...

Knight went from averaging 17.9 ppg in '13, 17 ppg in '14, and 19.6 ppg in '15, on 32+ mpg in all 3 seasons, to 11 ppg on 21 mpg in 16-17. Anybody's numbers would drop and look like trash when they're minutes are cut nearly in half due to sharing the court with 2 other premier talents. When he was getting starter minutes, he looked like Jrue or the expectation of what Jrue is suppose to be. He could play on that level here if he sees the floor a lot. Two Jrue's with AD & Boogie is a top 5 seed. We can get another Jrue for pennies mane

From Last November, the guy can still ball and he's young. But the emergence of Booker made him redundant. It would be like having two servings of instant grits!

Pelicans are (unofficially but should be) trying to get rid of a player that the team can't utilize on the floor anymore and holding up the team's cap preventing any moves being made. Suns are trying to get rid of a player that's holding up their cap and getting in the way of their rising 2nd year 2nd round draft pick.

Both teams have dead weight. Suns' dead weight fills a need for the Pelicans and makes Pelicans a lot better on the court. Pelicans' dead weight's contract is less than Knight's, becomes a one year deal in 2018, can be early terminated in 2019, and would make their cap better than Knight's contract behind Bledsoe and Ulis

At worst he's another Crawford with instant offense or he can play like a AS level PG. Either way he'd make the Pelicans very competitive in the West. At the same time he can be flipped again in a trade down the road

or
Asik and a 2019 1st rounder to make them feel good about immediately waiving/stretching Asik or holding onto his contract for a year
for Knight and '18 & '19 second round picks

Easy easy straight up player trade that should've been happened

Better yet we might can get a first round pick with Knight's contract if we traded them 3 cheap expiring's and a cheap 2 year Ajinca contract

If Phoenix is desperate to get out his contract and if we're desperate for backcourt help with upside, then it's a no-brainer. Moore remains on the roster and can flip him and Knight later on. Asik didn't have to be included and complicate things. The trade full of W's

You have to take those players into context. For instance, Crawford makes near league minimum. Knight does not bring much more for over $14 million a year. The contract and role comes into play when determining a player's value. If Knight were making what Crawford does and filled that bench spark plug role, I am sure many would be excited about him.

If he didn't have $44 million remaining on his contract, I would be more interested in him. Maybe if he could be had for say, Asik and Pondexter (and no picks), he would be worth a shot, but I doubt anyone wants Asik,

Asik will gone down as one of the worst acquisitions this team has made while in New Orleans. He probably would not make a roster at this moment. I forgot his nickname (it may have been the "Hammer"), and I have heard "Turkish Delight", but it has been more like a nightmare. I keep seeing threads where folks essentially add all the unworthy roster guys to unload on someone (I get the expiring contract thing). But I don't see a team taking Pelican leftover fish. Not happening.

Yeah I know what you mean about Asik, I've been singing that song on this board for ages. The thing that gets me is that he wasn't even all that in Houston and I cannot figure what in the
world the Pels saw in him to even trade for him except that he was 7 feet tall. He is slow, not athletic at all, no jump shot and couldn't make a free throw if his life depended on it.

I've said this before but, My issue with the Asik resigning isn't the contract. He was coming off of the arguably the best season of his career. The problem was the timing. It came after Gentry was hired.

So the question has to be asked, What happened? Did Gentry lie and say he was going to use Asik? Did Dell tell him that he was keeping Asik and Gentry had to make it work? How much of AD behind the scenes (at the time) refusing to play center affect resigning Asik?

That's the stuff I want to know.

He did play well for the first half of that season but when the playoffs arrived, it showed he was pretty much worthless. He got abused against golden state. Right there I wanted no parts of him or at worst case give him a very small offer. When I saw that contract I IMMEDIATELY knew we were screwed. It is what it is now we have to try and move on from it.

Well firstly, I think they genuinely thought Asik could play in a faster paced system because the best season of his career came in a similar system in Houston. The only problem was that this team has no James Harden to set him up with easy looks.

Next, if you recall, Asik got hurt in preseason of Gentry's first year. Asik was never fully recovered even when he did make it back. On top of that Gentry was a little impatient that year given all of the other injuries. So the entire thing got off on the wrong foot.

After that, Asik's injury problems only got worse between hardly any playing time. There still might be the possibility of his career being over. Someone posted on here he still hasn't been cleared to play.

I don't count much from that playoff series, our entire team was on injury reserve.

I think everyone was expecting Asik to be used more against other big bruising centers and Ryno to close out games. His contract would be alright in a role like that, however Gentry immediately did not use him, which makes me question why sign him at all?

This is exactly my thought and the contract has just made it worse since no one will take him now...

I normally try to express optimism, but honestly after CJ Miles being off the market to Toronto, im officially deflated. This free agency has been one of the most bizarre, and painful ones I can imagine. Not because we are "sitting on our hands" but the fact that even with two of the most talented bigs in the game we are STILL not attracting players to come here. It shows a reflection of our organization, what NBA players think of us, and most importantly the front office lack to sell players on this young and promising team (hopefully).


Maybe something soon will happen and this pessimistic post I have right now will make me look like a idiot, which I'll be perfectly fine with, but at this point realism is showing that even with a trade, we STILL will lack high I Q shooters, which be tough to make this whole thing work.

Anyone who has any knowledge of shooters left on the market or we can trade for please share.. because I honestly thought Miles was our last chance to get a decent rotational player in free agency. I'm honestly not feeling this team so far on paper , because what's around boogie and AD won't help them much. Btw so much fail on social media rumors. Just embarrassing.

Mike Dunleavy, Anthony Morrow, Aaron Afflalo are all shooters that are probably within our price range. But I think it's become obvious that if we are adding a starter this off-season, it'll be through trade.

It sounds like his focus is getting Lin. After that, I have no idea who he would target to fill out the roster. My guess is a bunch of near minimum deals for vets. Maybe something like Lawson and Barnes/Babbitt/Jerbko.

I would call it a successful off season if we trade for Lin then signed Affalo/Morrow and Lawson.

PS: I would much rather Eric Bledsoe and Brandon Knight if they take back Asik and fillers to make it work.

Lin is a great shooter, much better than Bledsoe or Jrue. I'd still prefer Bledsoe over any other PG we could possibly trade for, but Lin would be a huge addition, imo. Much more than most people seem to think.

Lin is a good shooter. I would not say he is a great shooter. The fact that he is coming off of an injury-filled season (missed most of the season) and a down season before that, has me a bit cautious about Lin. I hope Dell does not overpay.

What ever move Demps make will not move the win loss scale.
It obvious the franchise is not in a position to spend any amount of money outside of what assets the team has allowed.
I am fine with the current roster and let the chips fall. I see a 40 win season at best which is better than the last 2 years.
I am sure once the new GM takes control at seasons end we will then see what the future holds

We're not as bad as pessimists think. We have a roster that's good enough to make the playoffs with a full offseason together. They maybe can even get to the second round if we were a 6 seed. I'm really interested in seeing what Moore and Jordan Crawford can do with our bigs in a full season. Another wing or scoring guard would improve us a lot, but it's not the end of the world if we don't add anyone major this offseason.

The plus side is we didn't screw up the cap and make a bogus signing, even if it was because we didn't have cap room to mess up in the first place

Am I the only one that thinks the Jazz will fall this year w/o Hayward? Boston will win more games than Utah and that is not even close. I don't think they will win 50+ games. They lost Hill and Hayward and replaced them with Rubio!?!?

I've said it a couple times here that IMO I think we're only a couple players away from being a solid team that can make things interesting in the West. I don't know if we'll do it THIS season because of our cap situation, and its gonna be a crazy summer trying to get Boogie to resign.

I do think we can make the playoffs even with the team we have (barring injuries). 6th-8th seed is what I'm seeing now. If we can somehow bring in another impact guard (Bledsoe?) we can be a threat. We have the best 4/5 combo in the league. We just need to get the pieces around them to be a real scary squad.

If we're Phx or Bkn, would you take a 28 year old E'twaun Moore for Bledsoe or Lin? They would have to get better from the trade. Moore is decent but he's the same age as Bledsoe and Lin. Neither teams needs any C or SF from us. Phoenix was trying to get young assets for Bledsoe during the draft (Mudiay and first rounder from Den, the 16th pick from Chi)

When Sac traded Cousins, they got a 2016 top 10 pick Guard Buddy Hield and a 2017 top 10 pick from us

We'd have to give up 2 first rounders for either Bledsoe or Lin just for them to listen

Absolutely not for Lin. Anyone who gives up 2 #1s for Lin should be put in a straight jacket and hauled away immediately. He is not even in the same conversation as someone like Cousins and only has one year left on his deal. Bledsoe will take more to get than Lin, but 2 #1s for him would be high IMO. However, we do not have the young talent to pair with a #1 to get him.

Its funny. When the Pels do something, they always get bashed for sacrificing future assets and flexibility for a player/piece that in the long run, wont be worth the sacrifice. So this summer, they resist spending big money on guys like Swaggy P or CJ Miles -- who are nice players -- but realistically aren't likely to make a huge difference anyway. Do you guys remember James Posey? If we signed a James Posey today most of you guys wd be so happy bc Pels "did something."

This team has a pretty damn good big three. It has a few nice pieces to fill in around the big 3 in Solo Hill, Moore, a potential star at the 4 in Diallo, a potential sleeper back up pg in Quinn Cook, a potential scorer off the bench in Crawford, the rookie, perhaps bringing back lunchpail corner three guy Cunningham. So rather than getting rid of some of these assets to jump for a single player who may or not complete the team, and giving up almost all cap flexibility in the process, doesn't it make sense to take the slow approach? Let this team get into camp and play some games and see what you really need. If Cook plays great and Solo Hill shoots even worse, then do they really need a PG? Or if Cook sucks and Jrue looks lost at point, but Solo, Moore, and Crawford are hitting 40% from 3, do you really need another wing or are we looking at a PG at that point? Plus, if they never give cheap options like Crawford, Cook or Jackson a chance to perform, then they have no chance of getting that stud player who plays on a less than market value deal that they will need to make the superteam capanomics work. Also, by November/December, there will be some players available who aren't available now.

My point is, I don't see any moves out there now or in the past few weeks that realistically would be worth giving up all the remaining assets and flexibility.

This year is about proving the Big Three works. Playoffs and 45 wins is plenty. Then players will want to come here. Would rather win 45, not be hard capped and maybe have discovered a good cheap player or two than to be hard capped without prospects or picks and win 50.

I'm really not a fan of Lin (as a player, lovable human). I'm not sure if he's made some jump in 36 games in Brooklyn but I watched almost every game he played in Houston and he was usually underwhelming. Not very athletic, overall bad defender, streaky shooter at best, questionable finisher, creative passer but turnover prone, has some quickness but not very fast, not very athletic outside of quickness and balance. I assumed he would be a nice backup for the rest of his career. IMO Lin is overall just as good as a Ty Lawson. His biggest value to a team is in the box office and jersey sales.

We basically gave up all flexibility for the next few years when we re-signed Jrue to such a large contract. Now it is about trying to put players around the team given the numerous mistakes Dell has made. Young was not going to get a Posey contract. He was simply going to fill a role for a year or two. Now, we will try to fill with league minimum deals for veterans in hopes that they can contribute.

"Most" people on this board know this for Bledsoe...Why people have included a bad contract that we take back from Pheonix like Knight or Tyson Chandler....Lin is easier to obtain since BKN would probably take a 1st round pick since Boston has their first rounder next year.

A healthy percentage of the players on the Pels roster last year were flat out bad NBA players. Not average. Bad. Borderline scrubs. It was a sub-30 win group even with one of the NBA's best on the roster. Then you went out and got Cousins. BIG win. Yay! Huge step up, now we....um....

It can all change in a minute in the off season, you never know what is going on in the background, but doing nothing but trotting out the same scrubs with the same team + Cousins is abusive and dangerous as hell. One injury, just one, the whole season is lost, and you have given Cousins absolutely no reason to believe you are anymore competent and proactive an organization than his last one. You think after 7 years of mealy mouthed get nothing accomplished front office feebleness in Sacramento that he is ever going to want to be a prisoner of that kind of top down incompetence again? He's not a glamour hound. You never did need to sign Paul George to impress him. But you damn well better do something to show that you are proactive, have a vision, and are busting your ****** to win absolutely every game possible next year. Because I absolutely guarantee you he has already heard a full career's worth of "we're building/be patient/trust us" nonsense. Having another franchise just throw a whole pile of mismatched stuff at his feet and say, ok, you fix this, is a really good way to see him look around next offseason for an actual professional franchise to join.

Not true. They aren't hard capped. Have plenty of exceptions and room to use most of them under the lux tax. They have unguaranteed contracts and picks to spend. If they had already given up all flexibility, you wouldn't still be watching this thread bc they wouldn't be able to make any more moves.

So they have enough flexibility left for a good move or two. Just so far no deals worth giving up that flexibility and locking in on a roster.
